Quicken Loans National @ TPC Potomac

Figured I'd start the thread for next week's PGA Tour stop.

I've caddied at Potomac for about 4 year now so I'll be out there all week starting tomorrow for the first Pro-Am.

This is the last time the Tour will be in the DC area for a few years with the tournament moving to Detroit starting next year. The field is again fairly weak with the two biggest names being Tiger and Rickie.

Although the field is weak, the course is not and was dubbed "the beast of the beltway" by Gary McCord last year. TPC Potomac played as the toughest course on the PGA Tour (non major) with the winning score being -7 by Kyle Stanley. Augusta National was the only course that played tougher on Tour. Our 11th hole was the toughest par 4 on tour which played at 4.5 for the week and the 16-18 stretch was the 5th toughest finishing stretch.

I'm excited to be out there working the Pro-Am Monday/Wednesday as well as the short game/driving range during the tournament days. I'm in line to be in Tiger's Pro-Am on Wednesday so if I am I will hopefully live tweet through the thread for you guys on whats going on during his round and any inside stuff I hear.

I alway liked this venue. Great course that demands the golfer's full attention, unlike bomb and gouge.

Narrow fairways, US Open type rough.....a good ball striker will win the tournament.

I like these kinds of tournaments. The golfer really has to think his way around the course. I am sorry to see the venue change.

Is the rough as thick this year?

yes, brutal. I was told that they cut it a little today because of the rain we had the last 2 days, but for the last 6 weeks the ball basically disappeared in the rough off the tee.

last year I think they cut it down to about 3 to 3 1/2 inches which made it a little easier for the players (probably because they complained during the practice rounds).

Creedo you know of a good place to park? I'll probably be down Friday but not trying to park and bus it.

Parking for the event is 6 miles away at the Rock Springs Parking Lot, 6720 Rockledge Drive in Bethesda. Traffic is a nightmare.

Yeah i'm not doing that hence why i said i'm not taking a bus. I've gone every year to Congo and never did the bus for that reason. Always parked at someones house. I know I can get preferred parking but it's $50 which is crazy.

I wouldn't go to this tournament even if it was free. I used to go down there once a month or so for lessons with one of the pros, but the traffic was so awful I decided it was more efficient to just hit myself over the head with a hammer. If I timed everything perfectly, I might get there and back in 3 hours from the northern suburbs. Then the county finished me off by installing speed cameras everywhere. All you've got to do is accelerate from a traffic light too quickly and they'll get you. Around here, we call it the Montgomery County visitor tax.

The Golf Channel promoting the event as, “Tiger Woods takes on Rickie Fowler and a formidable field.”

When you’re trying to hang on to sponsors, that’s not very promising.

you could try and park it in one of the residential areas.

the area may be trying to crack down on it and kind of policing it but its worth a shot if you get in early.

i do know there is a community pool/park across from the entrance to lot B that may be open but again it might be policed

I could drive or bus out for the weekend rounds.... My first time at this event. I was planning on busing but what would you recommend?

Last year busing was the only way to get there.

A few have mentioned parking in people's yards, this happened when the tournament was at Congressional. I'm not sure if they cut down on allowing people to do this, but if you tried to you'd have to find a house on River Road and walk about 15 minutes to get to the main entrance for the tournament.

Thanks Creedo77 -- Respectfully and when you are able to, you should edit this thread's title to include the year 2018, so that all WRXers know that it is indeed this year's event that is being talked about.

Quicken Loans National ... June 28-July 1 ... TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms ... Par-71 / 7,139 yds

Defending Champion: Kyle Stanley

Purse: $ 7,100,000 // 1st prize: $ 1,278,000

The Field .... Inside The Field

By now, everyone knows that this will be the last edition of the National in the DC-Metro area before it moves to Detroit next year. One area of concern for me (perhaps others have thought of this as well) is the tournament's status for 2019 and after. Will it still be an invitational (limited field of 120), or will it be an "open" event (max full field of 156, including Monday Qualifiers) ??

My reason for asking this is based on the tournament's current list of invitation categories, which you can learn of via the "Inside The Field" link presented above. As you will see, Tiger Woods is eligible for the 2018 National on the strength of Fed Ex Cup points he's earned in the current 2017-18 season. If this had not been the case, then he would no doubt have received a sponsor invitation.

You will note that the National does not have a category for Life Members (20-or-more career Tour wins, and at least 15 years playing time). Of course, that glaring omission would probably not affect Tiger should he choose to play at Detroit in 2019, and in case he should not qualify for next year's event by other means, then a sponsor invite would be graciously granted.

If the National were to become an "open" event when it moves to Detroit (again, not yet known), then the Life Member category would automaticly be part of the invitation categories, and Tiger would have a free ticket to play any time he chooses.

At any rate, the 2019-and-after status of both Tiger and the National in Detroit will be dealt with when the proper time arrives. For now, the focus is on 2018, and on how Tiger and the rest of the field will fare at TPC-Avenel.

Enjoy The Tournament!

If Tiger doesn't have a top 5 finish, is it the final straw of accepting the new Tiger is just a middle of the pack player? the hype train starts to slow down?

I don't think so. Tiger plays into shape and less than a year ago he wasn't even sure if he was ever going to be able to play again. Give them man a season to get it back. Next year is where we will see what he can and can't do for the long haul.

Tiger's ball striking and driving aren't the issue. He isn't making any putts. The hype train hasn't remotely slowed down. No one where I work gives two craps about Jordan or Rory. They don't even know who they are. But they know who TW is and want him to do well, despite his poor life choices and injuries.

No one, not ONE of us thought he'd be even playing at this level. Many were hoping he'd never play again, but here he is. Year one is already a success. He's playing decently and he's upright and mobile. I'm already looking at year two. If he wins this year, it's a bonus. But holy crap, give the guy a break. He just looks like he's happy to be there.
