I saw someone with this same swing on the range a couple weeks back. At first I thought the guy just slipped but then it was the same follow through every shot! The guy I saw wasn't having much success unlike Hosing though.

I am guessing that more than half of you did what I did; ran the video repeatedly, and stopped it at the top of his backswing several times, and stopped it at his impact position several times. His stance looks very closed at address, and his takeaway is well above the plain but actually isn't all that bad. Kenny Perry and Jim Furyk might have odder takeaways.

 

At the top, he's actually in an excellent position, with the only caveat being whether it is good enough video to see how he is lined up along the line of play.

 

And at impact, he is in a very good position. Almost instantly after impact, he's going completely nuts. But that moment of impact could be one of 1000 golf professionals.

Yeah, that's exactly what I did. He looks to be closed to target in his stance with all clubs (other than putter). He appears to solve that by rotating much more than most, to the point that both hips rotate past where most would, so that the actual hips and shoulders appear to be toward target at impact. The pirouette is the result of that powerful rotation.

 

It's amazing that he can time it well, but it makes biomechanical sense to me. It's like his stance increases the potential length of his backswing, and the pirouette allows him to do that without restricting his downswing or forcing it outside.

 

EDIT: Put it another way:

 

1. A closed stance allows more rotation away from the ball, because the stance is already rotated away from the ball in the rearward direction.

2. An open stance allows more rotation through the ball, because the stance is already rotated away from the ball in the forward direction.

3. How can you have both? Well, you have to move your feet!
