The DC area has some decent courses in the burbs while having tons to do in terms of family things. Laurel Hill, Renditions, and Whiskey Creek are all really fun and are not more than an hour outside DC (barring any traffic disasters). Only issue is it gets pretty hot and humid in summer, today we have 100% humidity which sucks. Either way nice place and nice courses are around.

If your goal is to go somewhere that your family has something to do all day while you golf, this could work. If you want to see them before dinner, DC is a horrible vacation place to sneak off for a few hours of golf.

If you stay in DC, including travel to and from any decent course, you’re committing to at least six hours to play 18.

Taking a family trip next week to Oglebay, WV. Lots of stuff for the kids to do, three courses. Not too expensive. Nemacolin is another family resort with great activities and great golf but significantly more expensive. There must be similar options closer to MO.

Having just returned from Oglebay, have to say a week might be too much time for the family, and if you're going to travel that far, Greenbrier or Nemacolin might be better options. The terrain lends itself to dramatic hole layouts, severe lies, and beautiful scenery, but the two "resort" courses are basically public courses. Which isn't bad -- like any public course (or region) you may hit a perfect time and find open courses and great conditions, but for us it was frustratingly slow, and showed the strain of lots of rain and lots of play. We haven't visited many other resorts but the couple we have, the golf seemed less come-one-come-all. Oglebay does have a good pool, an "aerial challenge" course that a 12-year-old should love, and loads of walking and hiking. And the staff is super friendly and helpful. We had a nice time as a family, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who loves it, but if I had driven 8 hours and booked a week I might have been disappointed.

So I have one week in July to plan for a fast approaching vacation. My wife and 12 year old daughter don’t golf at all. I would like a place that would fully appeal to non golfer but have enough fairly nice golf that I can sneak in some rounds easily (ie decent number of courses in area so will be able to get in and out easily).

For various reasons, I am not planning for any California/Oregon/Colorado/Washington state or Chicago vacations. Also no Florida/Texas/AZ/ deep South (too hot for vacation!). And need to stay in Continental USA.

I’ve always liked the Idaho/Montana big sky country, but don’t know if they have lots of golf. Upper Midwest is scenic area with golf, but don’t know of exciting family destinations. Don’t really know much about northeast but seems like lots of city options, which wouldn’t make golf very easy.

Anyway, I’d love to hear any ideas. Thx!!

Probably a little late but Disney Aulani resort in west Oahu, Hawaii. Major activities galore for all ages of kids. Ko'olina GC where they play the Lotte LPGA event is literally across the street, you can walk from the resort although they have a shuttle. You could do golf in 4.5 hrs from when you leave the room to when you get back. And you're well away from the hubub of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki.

Orlando is an option. We stayed at the Villas of Grand Cypress, which is right on the Grand Cypress golf course, which is beautiful. You're a few minutes away from Disney World, which is a great place to take the family. Get back to the hotel after lunch and get a round of golf in while the kids and wife unwinds. Be done at 7, just in time to head back and take the family out for dinner.

Asheville/Gatlinburg. You have the Smoky mountains for your family to enjoy. It isn't too hot due to the altitude, and then you have some pretty good golf.

Sequoya National, Sevierville Golf Club, Omni Grove Park, Maggie Valley, Gatlingburg GC.

It isn't too expensive to rent a cottage in the woods in Gatlinburg, or just head over to the other side of the mountains in NC. 3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri was shot around the Asheville area and there are tourist stops now.

Sanctuary on Kiawah island is right on the beach and has tons of family activities. Great golf (anchored by the Ocean Course). Charleston is a quick drive away and if you havent been to the historic district there it is really an interesting place.

I second this. Actually am there now. Villas are a cheaper option than the Sanctuary which is a super hotel. 5 golf courses. Pool, Beach kid activities. Charleston as previously mentioned is 30 minutes away. Shuttle service will pick you up and take you to wherever you want to go.

I dont think you mentioned budget, but here are two awesome options:

The Greenbrier in WV would be perfect but it is expensive.

The Sagamore at Lake George in NY state is another great American resort.

Both have tons of activities, excellent dining options, and great golf. Your wife and daughter would have no problem staying happy and occupied while you play.

what courses do you like up there? i never played golf up that way, this is only my second season golfing. but we go 2 times a summer to lake george, next trip will be end of august.
