Bucket hats

This has been the most fabulous golf hat for me. It is a wide brimmed recommended by my dermatologist as she has removed a few minor pre-cancer cells from my face. It is cool feeling and stylish too. I have had it 2 years and it still looks brand new. Nice and light as well. https://www.amazon.com/Ultrafino-Monte-Carlo-Airway-Panama/dp/B00WH4ZCD2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1531042447&sr=8-1&keywords=Ultrafino+Monte+Carlo+Golf+Airway+Straw+Panama+Hat#customerReviews

For $12.99, you can't go wrong with the bucket hats at Costco.

Mega-thanks for this recommendation. Ordered one right away. Wore it a couple of times and chucked it into the wash. Five stars for keeping the sun off and five more for how it came out of the wash. Ordered two more! :)

I play with someone who is actually a reverse golf fashion snob. He believes in Tshirts and cargos playing golf, even though he is a very rich PhD scientist and makes fun of people who dress well. Kinda weird. He has told me numerous times my wide brim straw hat made me look 'gay', in spite of the fact I have blotches and spots all over my face and neck. I know he was just busting my chops, but in the same spirit of busting chops I said "I hope you get skin cancer and die". Funny stuff eh?

I own 2 buckets and love them although I still have to apply sunscreen around the base of the neck because their shade doesn't really reach all the way down there.

I have to agree, it is very stylish. Although, for some reason, I feel it isn't as accepted as the traditional golf hat.

What you mean a baseball cap? ;) For those who visit the dermotologist frequently, baseball caps keep them in business.

in Michigan this year, it's been almost as bad as anywhere in the states for Sun and Heat. It is really been a blistering summer here, but yet I don't see anybody wearing a bucket hat or a full brim hat. I'm not saying they aren't better to protect against the Sun, because they definitely are. People have a hard time going against the grain so to speak in style when it comes to what they wear. I have thoughts of getting a full brimmed hat but not sure which kind I would like or which would be the coolest temperature wise. I may have seen one this year while playing golf and that's about it.

It's been pretty warm in Chicago as well. I picked up several large brimmed hats after helping fund graduate school for the children of my dermatologist. I agree that very few golfers seem to care about the sun and I do get a few looks now and then with the brims - but each his own. Might help if the guys on the PGA tour showed as much concern about the sun as they do their putting stroke. Sun screen helps but paired with a big brim it makes quite an improvement.

Just an older guy with 7 or 8 clubs and a MacKenzie Sunday Walker bag

I like the point you make about the guys on the PGA wearing them. They seem to have such an influence on amateur golfers, so much that they could promote good things like full brimmed hats.

How is the brim in the wind? Does it flop around or is it pretty stiff?

Even after one washing the brim held it's shape. But I suspect that anything above about 15 knots of wind the brim might move some. It's a Goldilocks' brim . . . not too soft and not too firm . . . just right (for me).

It's solid. It does its job well.

When the wind gets to be really high, didn't have a problem with the brim at all. Instead, the hat just came off the top of my head :taunt:

If brim droop is important to you, the Shelta Hats I mentioned above are the best, bar none. Actually, they are pretty much the best sun hat under any criteria, and I have/have had many to compare agaisnt (Outdoor Research, Tilley, etc). Only sun hat I can wear at work all day on the golf course and not get frustrated with.

Thanks to all for the recommendations. I've been needing to switch to a bucket hat to protect my ears and neck. I ordered a Shelta hat today - looking forward to being cooler and better protected.

I have been wearing straw type hats the last couple of years during the summer, but they don't last too long. I have a Tilley that I really like, but it will heat up the head on really hot days. The Imperial coolcore Old Norse hat that was mentioned on the first page of this post looks like a great hat for the summer heat.

But I just happened to be shopping in Lake Tahoe last week and came across the Shelta hat, also mentioned earlier. A little pricey at $65, but bought the Seahawk version and wore it three days at the Celebrity Tournament and also for a round of golf that started out hot and sunny and turned into a thunder storm on the back nine (actually everyone got called in to club house for about 45 min. until it passed). Love it! Light weight, breathable and holds up in wind and rain. Almost the perfect hat.

After reading this thread, I have noticed that there are more people on the golf course wearing bucket type hats than I would have previously thought.
