I'm not one to brag much about myself, and my golf game certainly doesn't have much to brag about. To keep long story short, I've been golfing off and on for 20ish years with some huge layoffs in between. I have just taken the game back up this year after a 7yr layoff. 7yrs ago I shot consistently in the mid-90s. First time out this year, a 116 :/ Second time was a 105, so an improvement.

Anyway, third round out I lost my swing. My driver I was hitting better than ever, I could not believe it. I hit about 10/14 fairways off the tee. But I literally could not hit my irons. Big shanks right, big hooks left, even a couple whiffs. One hole, after another great drive, I'm in the middle of the fairway, the cart was parallel to the ball, facing me. I swung, the ball went directly right and under the cart, out the other side. By the 9th hole I gave up and just hit driver, then pick up, then play some short stuff around the green.

Not sure what was wrong, I happened to be watching the senior tour at a restaurant (TV right above me). Watching them swing I realized I was all arms, I had no turn at the shoulders or waist.

Went to the range the next day. I even decided to blow up my whole swing: grip, I'd only ever used interlock, I went overlap. Started standing closer to the ball. Changed my weight distribution, used to be more towards heels, now it's more even. Most importantly I made a very conscious effort to turn at the waist and shoulders. Suddenly I was hitting the ball again. Not ever shot was great, but I was making solid contact on every shot. Been to the range since and I seem to be hitting everything very solidly now.

So now my brag: played a par 3 course over the weekend. Par 3s typically have been some of my worst holes in my golf life as I rarely hit GIR. This was a 9 hole course, so par 27. I shot a +5, and that was with a 5 on 1 hole and 6 on the last (terrible tee shot, shanked it right). I hit 6 of 9 GIR, I had 2 birdies, I had 4 pars. Missed 1 other birdie by just the edge of the cup.

It's not much, but I was excited at the way I was hitting the ball.

I'm put in mind of a Dilbert Cartoon :)

But more on topic - I won a medal. On count back. Against someone with a 13hcp when I had 26. Does it get better than that?

:)

You beat someone who went round in 13 shots less than you. And they wonder why golf participation is declining. Golf must be the only sport in the world where you are incentivised for getting worse.

Sometimes I don't cry myself to sleep..... nah just kidding. I started golfing in 2015, about 6 months after I started I became a sub for the local muni league (mostly comprised of hackers). I got absolutely destroyed by every person, now I'm better than everyone other than the club champion. Honestly it makes me feel great because I used to get ridiculed, and even last night someone was messing with me about it but I can show them up anytime now. I just love the game and I think I gained my confidence back which I've been lacking for a couple months. I know I'm by no means a top-notch golfer, but I'm on my way!

Played today, had six birdie putts inside of 15 feet. A couple were 8-10 feet. I left every single one of those six putts a minimum of two feet short.

It was a stirling display of speed control on the greens.

I shot 73 at age 61 last Sunday. Unfortunately, my 14 year old son shot 67. Played the 6850 yard tees on the home course, slope 134.

Congrats, those are some very impressive scores for both of you!

I played terribly yesterday except for this hole. That's the first time I birdied that hole in probably 2 years. Perfect drive, perfect 5 wood, and 2 serviceable putts. (For reference I shot a 90, so this is great compared to the rest.)

Curious what you use to track your shots like that?

It’s the Game Golf iPhone app. It’s free to use, but you have to fiddle with your phone every shot, so it might not be for everyone. It uses gps to see your location and you tell it what club you hit and it does the rest (usually).

Last Sunday I broke 80 for the first time since I was in high school (back in 2007.) Shot a smooth 78. Funny thing was, I couldn't putt into a five gallon bucket from 5 feet away because my putter was so bad, but I had the best ball striking day I've ever had. 10 pars, 7 bogies and a birdie. 5 over on the last 6 holes because I finally started adding up my score and played scared, should have been lower.

15 over today, of which 10 of those were 3 off the tee 5 times.

If only I could hit a ball off the tee with anything other than an iron consistently well. Driver, 3 Wood, Hybrids, driving iron...if I’m on the tee far too often I’ll block it left. This almost never happens off the turf with any club.

Infuriating.

A few days ago playing ryder cup format at our club. I was in last group and when we got to the tee we could see about 50-75 people surrounding the green. The previous groups, their wives/girlfriends and people at the bar came out to watch the finish. I had about 100 yards in from the rough and was somewhat nervous hitting with this crowd. I hit the perfect shot... I am watching it in the air and it lands just short of the pin... rolls a few feet and I have 3 feet for birdie. The gallery erupted. Probably the only time in my life I will ever experience anything close to the adrenalin rush the pro's must feel. Tapped in and won my match....

Had an okay range session last night to warm up. Teed off on the back nine and immediately made a 7 on the first hole. Decided I wouldn't keep score and just make it a practice round. After barely missing a 12 foot par save on the next hole to go to +4, I never expected what would come next. I ended up playing the final 7 holes in -1 and didn't make a bogey. This included 5 one putts. I turned into a chipping and putting machine! Ended the night with a 38. Best 9 of the year. I need to remember the "don't keep score" attitude going forward.

I don't keep score nut certainly know how I'm playing. Add it up if things are going well at sometime during the round.

First 4 holes is my litmus test. If +2 or +3, then could be a scoring rounds. Usually am +4 or +5 and 5-7 I want to par (a par 5 and two 300-310 par fours).......

Played 2 rounds Saturday.

3 putted 2 of the first 4 holes and finished with a double to shoot 69 the first round.

Went 5 over in 10 holes for the second round, then birdied 5 of the last 6 to shoot even par.

I missed the green on 18 to the same spot both times, long and in the rough with a down slope behind the hole. First round I choked, second round I chipped it in.

I'm starting to come down with a bad case of FIGJAM
