Iron headcovers? You guys use them?

Recommended Posts

Hey, in my short time so far on here it seems as though these iron headcovers are kinda snickered at, or thought to be a sign of a "poser" if you will. I've always used them as I hate the damage caused by my irons rattling around against each other. But yes I will admit they are occasionally a pain in the butt to take off for each shot and put in my pocket, and I have left one laying on the fairway or fringe a couple times.

Just curious if anyone else uses them? Kinda want to stop using them as my irons are well worked in and marked up at this point. And sometimes I do think my bag maybe looks like an 80 year old dudes. (no offence to the older gents)

Whats the general consensus on them here? Anyone using them.

Cheers

I use a few in the bag so that within each divider there is a covered iron so no two uncovered irons are banging together. I've done this for years and it's done a good job of protecting my irons from bag chatter. I ride 100 percent of the time and the noise of clubs banging together behind me drives me crazy.

Pull the club. Remove cover. Slip in back pocket. Hit shot. Wipe club (optional), Put cover back on. Put club back in bag. I can do it in my sleep and as quick as my buddy who doesn't use them.

Personally, I think they are hilarious looking and I don't see the point. Irons are tools; they smash into the ground, etc etc. Everything you'll find if you do a search of the topic in this forum.

That said; to each his own. Doesn't bother me a lick if someone else wants to use them.

I would venture to say that most guys who shun them are walkers. One round on the back of a riding cart will cause noticeable "damage" to a set of forged irons. If you don't mind that, it's fine by me but when I go to sell my used irons, I get more for them because I use covers.

Ive never used them before, but I just bought a new set of Mizzys and it kills me when I ride to hear the clubs clanking against each other. So yes, I now have them. I told myself I would take them off when I walk(95%of the time), but I haven't!! The guys call them Club Condoms!!:)

I like when guys at my club use iron covers. It allows me to distinguish who’s a threat and who’s donating in the Thursday skins game.

Haha in all reality, i could care less what you have on your clubs as long as you aren’t a jerk when we are paired together. You could have a Tickle Me Elmo headcover on your driver and if you are cool, we have no problems.

Good call... i do that and walk 95% of my rds. Hate the club chatter.

I think you'll find that the consensus is that hardly anyone uses them, especially since more than half the members here don't keep a set of irons long enough to even know what bag chatter looks like.

Ever seen what 10 years of bag chatter does to a beautiful set of chrome Mizuno forgings? It's not pretty.

For those of us who hold onto our irons for many years, iron covers will make a big difference in the long term.

I have two sets/bags, one for walking that I keep at my club where I walk exclusively, and another for riding when I play with others at other courses. The walking bag has no iron covers; the gentle clack while walking is soothing and does no damage. The riding bag has covers; when we hit a bump and there's this huge jangle of clubheads smashing together, I know it's not my irons shedding resale value. When I played Ping i5s there also were no covers; they were basically un-dingable.

Quite possibly I will reach a point where I don't care about resale value or my new clubs looking new, but for now it's a simple routine that removes a negative. Nobody gives me grief and almost everybody I play with takes off and replaces a driver and putter headcover on every hole, so perhaps they can see the folly in criticizing someone for doing something on one shot that they either have just done or are just about to do themselves. If dings shouldn't matter to my Mizuno irons, they shouldn't matter to their Scotty Cameron putters.

Well, that's apt. There are those who see the sense in condoms, and there are those who don't.

I keep the iron head covers on when moving the bag around but remove them before a round. Put them back on again after a round before tossing the bag in the car. Too much of a hassle to keep removing and putting them on for each shot. Sometimes I play with people who do but doesn't really make a difference to me. Live and let live!

That's an interesting thought. I rode in a cart for a scramble earlier this month. It was my first non-walking round since the same scramble last year. The rattling around of my clubs was noticeable the entire time. I could see that bothering me if I played that way more frequently, causing me to look to solve for that problem.

I haven't thought of using them until I got a new, gleaming set of z745's. Now, I might.

Interesting to hear the different opinions and methods of use. I rarely ever ride in a cart so maybe ill give walking rounds a few tries without them. But as mentioned above I have been using them long enough that the removal and reinstall are just natural and not a PIA for me. But I do like the look better when they are uncovered.

No perfect solution but interesting to hear from you guys. My irons are well worn (pre owned) but they have no bag chatter yet.

I use them because my clubs spend 365 days a year in my truck. I take them off when I play.

Sometimes it’s interesting to see that I haven’t used either my 6i or 9i when I look down at the bag walking up 18.

I put the covers in the side pocket of the bag when they come off. I don’t go on and off throughout the round.

I use them for my irons. My wedges are uncovered. Before the round starts, I take my driver and putter headcover off and put them in my bag. Everything else stays. As said....get to your ball and get yardage. Grab club, remove cover and put in pocket. Hit shot. Clean club, put cover back on. Off you go. Not really that difficult. To each their own.

The only time I have ever used iron covers was nearly 20 years ago. My set of Mizuno MP-14s lasted me a little over a year because of that super soft Mizuno forging. Felt great but not too friendly on the wallet. I ended up buying another set of them and decided to grab some head covers for them. That lasted about 5 rounds and I just took them off. Haven't used them since. Was tempted to use them when I switched to my Titleist Tour Model Custom Grinds, but nope.

My only covered clubs are my driver and putter.

But it's for shaft protection. I keep them in the same slot in my bag. I'm worried about that putter head banging into the graphite shaft.

It's cool that everyone has a unique style on what would seem such a mundane topic.
