Need a New Ball

OK, I've been gaming the Sriixon Z Star XV. Great ball. However, my home course is very difficult. Specifically, I can't hold the greens with the XV...at all. Every shot is either to the edge of the back rough or deep in the back rough. This includes pitching wedges. Dangit... In general, I can backspin almost any ball. But my home course is tough, and the greens are brutal. My buddy gave me a sleeve of the 4-piece Kirkland. Nice ball. But, that one doesn't hold the greens as well as I'd like (my example I'm thinking of is a long par 4 - 5 iron). Thanks...

The greens and bunkers at our course were recently rebuilt by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and I'm starting to think he's a mean person...

Maybe back to the Project A, the MTB Black, or game my son's fave...the Chrome Soft...

I don't know what to say if you can't hold a green with a XV. I gather you get too much spin!

I am not sure but you could try a 3 piece ball since you are currently using a 4 piece ball and see how that goes, maybe try a couple different ones like the regular Z-Star or Q-Star Tour. If that don't work, then try a couple two piece ones like Callaway Super Soft's or Srixon Soft Feel's.

Good luck!

If you cannot hold the greens with the XV or Kirkland 4 piece, I am not sure what will help. Maybe try a ball with a higher flight?

it would be good to have a general idea of your game so we can offer more informed suggestions..

an idea of how fast you swing would be a good start..

when i started losing substantial swing speed after age 60--am 72 now--i immediately went to lower compression and softer balls..

even experimented with ladies balls..

right now i like the Honma Tw-G1 which is a 4-layer urethane lower compression ball..

Newly rebuilt greens take a year or two to soften, I believe.

this is a really good point

I think it's the new greens as well.

I'd give your XV a test run at another course (one not with new greens) and see how the ball performs.

There's only going to be so much difference in performance between urethane-covered balls so there might not be a lot to gain there if you really like the XV.

Thanks for all the input. I haven't taken the time to put a speedometer on my iron swings. Driver is about 105mph. My lofts aren't strong. The XV works great for me on other courses, and I do believe the point made by Chadwickog is a good one. That's my point, really - that my need to stop the ball is course-specific. Our greens just opened about 6 or 8 weeks ago and they are hard, and from what I understand, are rolling at least at a 10. When I hit them it doesn't stop. I do have a box of the regular Z Star and am certainly going to try those next.

The other thing that kills me is once the ball does roll into the rough (very healthy rough) then you're faced with a chip that's not going to stop. I have to laugh...After a nice approach you're taking 4 more stabs to get it in the hole. Massive scores result. But, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger... Heading out right now to spend 2 hours on a practice hole to practice the short game.

Bridgestone tour B series XS. Soft and spin - y.

I never liked the XV ball from Srixon...too clicky for my taste.

Chrome soft is another good ball.

If you really like the firmer ones, ProV1x would be the logical next choice, I would think.

There are a lot of offerings that have sample packs you can purchase for pretty cheap. I'd try the Snell MTB Black and Red, Vice Pro and Pro Plus, Cut Blue and Grey, and compare those against the Z-Stars you already have in stock.

TaylorMade M4 Tour 3 wood w/HZRDUS Red stiff
TaylorMade M3 2 hybrid (set to 19*) w/HZRDUS Black stiff

Srixon 765 5-PW Modus 120 Stiff
Cleveland RTX 3.0 50*, 54*, and 58* KBS 61

the vice pro. I think its a 3 piece ball a buddy of mine had a box and demanded I try it,....it wasn't horrible, but It felt like a qstar tour which I do not like either

You should try the Pro Plus. Different feel.

Thanks all for the input. Since starting this thread I did have a few discussions with other members at the club. Now, some tactics for the new greens are being developed and shared, which should be helpful.

Good point about the TP5 and x not being cheap. Luckily, I don't go through balls very quickly. My first Z Star XV lasted for a couple rounds. It looked like I pounded the dimples down with my driver, but was probably just a discoloring. I kept it in my bag as an odd keepsake for a while.

I made an observation the other day. A year ago I went through a short phase where I hit some massive drives (in the fairway). All of those were with the Project a (which is a very stoppable ball, too).

My experience with the 2018 project a is not so great. it balloons quite a bit in the wind, even a slight 10-12 MPH wind.....I just bought a dzn and I am not that happy with them. so much different than the LETHAL from TM.

TP5 is real solid too, but way to expensive. Hopefullly at some point TM will make a 20piece box like they did with the lethals

New greens don’t bite. You have to land the ball nearer the front and play for rollout.

A ball with more mid to long iron spin is the Project (a).

As for around the green, my best results have come with the current Pro V1, TP5, Z-Star with fresh wedge grooves.

And yes, RTJ Jr. is evil.

Not only is he a mean person, but his architecture sucks.
