Back in 2000, started golfing after a few years off, and was going out once a week with 3 other coworkers... It was a 160ish yards, and I grab my 5 iron, and crush the ball sky high and we can tell the ball is on a straight line for the flag... it lands and we lose sight of the ball... it hit about a foot or so behind the flag and rolled back to within 6 inches....

I was standing on the tee box waiting for the sprinklers to quit so i could hit.

As i was waiting two guys pulled up in a cart, minute later i hit a 145 8 iron, didnʻt watch, knew it was close.

The two guy's yell out " damn, itʻs in the hole !! ", we get up there and my ball is plugged in the top back of the hole just above the cup liner. I said " well shoot, canʻt count it as itʻs not exactly in the hole."

Next day iʻm checking in and the club pro say's " two guyʻs were in here last night saying they witnessed their first hole in one, i had to change the cup on #11, you wouldnʻt know anything about that would you ? " ..... busted.

Had the same thing happen to me 20-something years ago.

The group I was playing in all witnessed it, including the group in front of us that were getting into their carts when I hit the shot.

Needless to say there was a lot of hooping and hollaring.

But when we get to the green one of my buddies goes to get my ball and said it wasn't there. We're all thinking he was joking, he was a quite the card, but as we walk up he pulls the pin and the ball doesn't come out with it, so we're all a bit befuddled as we all peek into the empty cup.

I'm all disappointed, starting to look around to figure out where my ball might have ricocheted, or something - one of my buddies slowly circles the hole, and finally says, is that it up under the cup liner?

Sure enough it was.

It had rained heavily the day before, and had softened the greens enough that my ball burrowed about 6 inches up under the grass.

We tore it up so bad digging the ball out, that one of my group had to go off and dig up some dirt to bring back to try and fix the green and the cup. By the time we got done it looked pretty good, but we did tell the proshop at the turn.

Totally counts, unless it's at ANGC par 3 course, where all the Wednesday holes are cut in the bottom of bowls.

TM 2016 M2 12*(-2 setting) - OG Grafalloy Blue X, 43.5"

TEE XCG7 16.5* 4w, OG Grafalloy Blue S, 41.75"

Question, if you're playing a par 3 course (not pitch and putt like a real 18 holes of par 3's) and get a hole in one does that count or is the ace forever tarnished?

Well, I suppose.

But, it as like my uncle whose reputation was forever tarnished when he called the local newspaper claiming to have something like 18 holes in one, and conned them into writing an article.

Then people wrote in saying how he played every day at a par-3 course.

You get 18 shots at an ace every round your odds are a lot better than someone playing a regulation course that might get 3 or 4 a round.

Quick story on why I always keep cash on me at all times.

At my home course, RiverWinds Golf Club in South Jersey, the second hole is about 160-180 yard par 3 depending on the tees. During the week there is usually a guy who runs this local charity where for a $5 donation, if you hit your ball within a grip length, you win a golf trip somewhere in the country for you and a buddy. "Within a grip, win a trip." Usually I try the bet because it's for charity and who doesn't want to go on a fully paid golf trip? But this one particular day last year, I didn't have any cash on me, and my playing partners wouldn't spot me some bills. Of course, the one time I didn't have any cash on me, I one hop the flag stick and the ball stops immediately less than 6 inches from the cup.

No hole in one, no trip for me. I haven't been that close since.

Man, some of the stories with potential cash or prizes on the line are brutal. Yesterday was the one year anniversary of this gem, which was half a phone length away from popping my hole in one cherry and by far the closest I've ever been. Pretty tough par3 over water from 165ish away. Not too upset though since it was an ugly shot that I caught thin with my 7. Plus I was playing by myself and hope to have some witnesses when one finally drops.

140 yard par 3 with the a front hole location. My ball hit the indicator flag, wrapped up in it and shot straight down into the hole. The flag. Not my ball. The flag left my ball on the lip instead of carrying it into the hole with it.

Last weeks league we were standing on the tee on a driveable downhill par 4 discussing aces and such. The green cleared and I clobbered a 3-wood to about 6”. Made the eagle putt.

Today was on the same course, but on the back nine playing a skins game... short (112 yrd straight uphill) par 3. Jarred it with a gap wedge.

Won a $50 skin...but the beer tab ran $110!

3rd ace in 7 years.

My closest call to date, yesterday, 147y to 1ft. Not a crazy story, just a back pin on an upper tier with a 15mph tail wind.
