Too hot for golf?

Recommended Posts

I am a very active and fit 37 year old but suffered heat exhaustion a few years back and cannot do days with heat index's in the 100's. I was standing on the green waiting to putt and literally felt the world spin, vision started going black and felt insanely nauseous. Couldn't keep anything down and felt lucky to get back into the clubhouse. I was dehydrated to start... ran and worked out prior to round and never got my fluids back up. To this day i get panicky when I'm in super hot weather. If your going to play I would honestly take every precaution available. Hydrate, cold towels, shade, umbrella, anything that helps. I'm a guy that used to love the heat and humidity and now it absolutely terrifies me!

I watched a man die on the golf course. It was a 100 degree day and on the 7th green, he just dropped to the ground. He was late 50's and was walking but a caddy was carrying his bag. The caddy was a pre-med student and immediately began CPR. A cardiac nurse was on a nearby hole and she used the paddles on him as soon as they brought them out from the clubhouse. It was too late. It was a pretty troubling thing to see. Be smart out there in the heat.

Played today, hit 109 heat index

Rode of course, lots of water and Gatorade

Too hot for a fat boy but found my lost swing over last 10 holes, so I got that going for me

Dunn is some great stuff!

Though lots of bad advice in this thread.

Well dont keep all the good advice to yourself, enlighten us!

Heat exhaustion, heat stroke is nothing to fool with. Staying hydrated is only one part of the equation, it really depends on how well your body can cool itself. Heat Index is a measure of how hot it really feels when humidity is factored in with the actual air temperature. Sweating helps to cool the body but it becomes less effective as humidity rises, couple this with high heat and it does not take long for core temps to rise. Know the symptoms and watch for them. It can get dangerous quickly. As a coach I understand that I have to follow guidelines that others do not. Additionally, i have seen it all and it is scary. I see no reason to unnecessarily risk a child's safety.

Hydration is a must. Nunn and the like are great to add to water. Pedialite is also good. Avoid the high sugar sports drinks or cut them with lots of water. Have your child seek shade for a quick water break, often. Wear light, loose clothing. Have spare dry clothing for a change. Wear sunscreen and apply often (sunburn affects your body's ability to cool itself) Have a cooler with iced down towels. Watch/monitor your child carefully for necessary action.

Sadly, it has only been in the last 5 or so years that the governing bodies have begun to take heat seriously - and really only after athletes have died because of heat stroke.

So just saying "it's never too hot to golf" is really not great advice.

You are right. Growing up in Florida we deal with this 9 months out of the year. I know my kid understands the value of Hydration and Nutrition on the course. He never goes on the course without a cooler of at least 10 water bottles and food. He is also out in the sun everyday. He applies sunscreen before he goes out and after 9 holes. He is very acclimated to the Florida heat. For him, "It is never too hot to golf or fish."

I used to coach middle school cross country back in the day in Orlando. i had the best distance runner on my team in the county. We were at a meet where he broke the school record for the mile and he won the meet. As soon as he crossed the finish line he collapsed. Heat Exhaustion. Immediately got him into the locker room and put him into the a cold shower. Covered his body with ice in towels. Scary Stuff.

Hydration doesn't start the day of a meet, game, match, or round of golf. It has to be a daily regimen and making sure your urine is always clear. If the urine isn't clear then you are dehydrated.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

You want hot. Try golfing in Columbia. Hottest damn place on earth. I played 18 yesterday, or tried. Stopped after 13. Our HI regular stays above 100 all July and August. We are talking actual 100+ temps then 75-90 humidity. We frequently have a HI of 115*. They issue warnings to not even leave the house sometimes. You golf in the morning or late afternoon when the sun starts to offer some shade. I’ve seen it 90+ at midnight here.

No offense but that sounds like playing golf in a blast furnace. played today and finished with 102 realfeel. That's VERY hot for us!

Quick update. Temp hit 106 today and the boy survived. Luckily we had a cart. Drank about a gallon of water and had cooling towels rotating in and out of the ice chest. Reapplied sunscreen on 6 and 12 Now back home swimming with friends. Has a sweet farmer tan though.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

While I can play in pretty much anything I find that realfeel above 100 becomes uncomfortable for me. It's just not fun to play when the boys are screaming for AC!

we play often at 100 + and through the summer we get days of over 110 for a week at a time and you just make sure you have plenty of fluids on board and seek shade where you can. i jump in a cart at 100 or above and drink plenty of fluids . if kids are not acclimatised to the temp then you have to get them used to the heat gradually.

My two cents. Here in Alabama if we didn't do outside activities once the heat index hit over 100 we wouldn't do outdoor activities for a good 10 week span of the summer. I coach cross country and put my kids through an extensive heat acclimation program and educate them on hydration and heat safety. The same goes for my 9 year old junior golfer son. For context, he walked 18, pushing his own cart, on an EXTREMELY hilly course Tuesday in 95 degree heat with heat index above 100 and was no worse for wear. The night before he drank extra fluids. The morning of the tournament he drank water constantly. While out on the course he was drinking a 20 oz Powerade or water for every 3-4 holes played. In between shots he had a cooling towel wrapped around his neck which we switched out every hole with a fresh one. As well, he played with a UV umbrella over his cart. Finished the 5 hour round with no issues whatsoever other than just being tired from a full round of golf on a brutal course. Heat is nothing to fear you just have to plan appropriately and prepare appropriately.
