Can’t speak on what it would look like but my guess is not really wanting to go. I would think burnout is caused by too much golf with out other activities in there. My option would be to shut golf down fir a timeframe. A week two weeks a month or a few. Going to be different from person to person.

I’m vet aware of this and why we usually only practice two- three at most a week. There are times when we shut down for a week here and there too. After worlds I plan to give mine a break even if she doesn’t want it.

I think the signs are different in every player because some like Golf more then others. I can usually tell when you start to see them regress in golf. Lots of reasons for it to happen.

The cure is to take time off then refocus and make golf fun again. As a dad it very good sometimes to just take the family on either a day or a weekend out doing something other then golf with the family. We like to take a vacation every year as a family that is not golf related it seems to really help refocus everyone.

Last week we went to a museum for the day and came home and my daughter decided she want to play a few holes before it was dark and ended up playing one of the best rounds I ever seen her play. Afterward she told me she had fun going out but missed playing so much and had a blast heading out there later in the day.

I feel that you must take longer breaks of 2 weeks to a month from Golf for juniors especially age 11-12 and under. After those ages, my guess is if your junior is really serious about golf they will then take it full time (perhaps with shorter breaks of a week when there is not a big tournament coming).

It's no fun when the rabbit's got the gun.

Someone suggested "Dont Should on your Kids" book the other day. I am so glad they did, I just poured through it in two days. Simple , direct, and easy read that should be required for every sports parent. Addresses Burnout multiple times. Its hard not to think your kid is special or exempt , but I think if you take an honest look at the situation with a long term vantage point you should be able to tell pretty clearly when its time to ease back or take an extended break.

Yeah, wish I had that book two years ago. Great read.

You're welcome. :)

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

I have a 10 and 12yr old and they are both very good students and active in sports. My Wife and I share somewhat opposing views on this topic. I see many shades of grey and she is very black and white. While I agree it's a commitment and needs to be taken very seriously I also want them to enjoy this time and grow. Sometimes Parents (not all) live vicariously through there children and fail to see the signs. In the age of social media all kids are "special". My opinion, a 11yr old for example is still a child and needs to be aloud to develop at a normal pace on there own terms to a certain degree. It's a complex balance, when it becomes work they loose interest and passion. My biggest fear as a parent is becoming my own worst enemy. BB

What does it look like, what causes it and what's the cure?

You need to read the book that Leezer recommended. "Don't Should On Your Kids". Burnout is often cause by parents that are living vicariously through their kids. The kid stops having fun because the parent makes it about them rather than about the kid having fun. The goals and aspirations have to come from the athlete, not the parent.

I am GenX.  If you really think I care about what you have to say, I don't.

It’s $3 on Kindle, worth much more

Leez should be getting a commission at this point. I mean, $3 book, I’m thinking at least .03 per purchase.
