Dallas Public Courses

I lived on Lake Worth for a summer back in '03. I remember liking Hawks Creek quite a bit while I was down there.

And Bear Creek by the airport.

And Diamond Oaks if you can get on.

So I am coming to dallas and frankly struggling to find a place to play. The courses seem to all be in crappy shape from what I am hearing. I have played Tribute and OA, as well as a couple rounds at Texas Star, didn't think any of them were very memorable. All good but none great. Tour 18 sounds fun but seems to be in terrible shape. Cowboys sounds cool but everyone says it isn't worth the money. Tierra Verde or Grapevine or Iron Horse maybe. I don't care about price as much as conditioning. I HATE playing courses that are in bad shape. We are staying at the Hyatt at the airport but my cousin is picking us up to play so something reasonably close would be nice. How hard is it to get on to the nice course at Stonebridge?

PS, We are playing the 8-10 of March.

Tnord is spot on. Welcome to North Texas in the middle of winter, lol. So you might need to rethink your expectations.

Finding a private course that overseeds is your best bet to play a course in any kind of decent shape for this kind of year. I can tell you that the Stonebridge course you referenced (the Dye Course) course does not overseed. The only one I know that does is TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney. I would think that TPC Four Seasons does as well. Getting on a private course pretty much would take getting your pro at the course you play to call and arrange it. That's assuming you are a member at a private course or that you know a pro at a private course who would make the call for you.

I do agree with you that we really don't have great or memorable courses that the public can play. And while there's numerous really good private courses, there are probably no more than 2 or 3 private courses, at best, that would fall into the great or memorable category.

Echoing others the nicest would probably be Cowboys club. Played it last year, and didn't think it was worth the $$ but still enjoyed it.

Texas Star is really nice, especially for the money.

I love Steven's Park especially for the price. Like others have said, it's a super charming course. Always in good condition, great views of Dallas on the back nine.

If you are willing to drive, I think Tierra Verde in Arlington is one of the best public courses in the entire DFW metroplex. I just played it last Thursday and it was in fantastic shape, greens were smooth and fast. It's a certified Audubon golf course, meaning it's gotten awards for it's preservation of the natural habitat. There are ZERO homes on this course, and most fairways are completely isolated from each other. It's a big difference from a lot of metroplex courses where you are always looking into someone's back yard.

Texas Star keeps taking my lunch money. :(

DRIVER:  Callaway Rogue ST 10.5

FAIRWAYS:  Callaway Rogue ST 3, 9, 11 Fairway Woods

HYBRIDS:  Callaway Big Bertha 3 Hybrid, Rogue ST 4 Hybrid

WEDGES:  Callaway Jaws Raw 50 S Grind, 54 S Grind, 58 Z Grind

PUTTER:  Odyssey Toulon Las Vegas

BACKUPS:  Odyssey Toulon Garage Le Mans Tri-Hot 5K Double Wide, MannKrafted Custom, Slighter Custom

BALL:  Testing

A man has to have options!

Stevens Park just outside of downtown is great.

I'll second this.

I played this in a last minute, on a whim situation and was very impressed. Not long, not too difficult either but absolutely full of golden era character.

Three or four greens are flat and square. Ask a local why they are square if you want a neat story.

Ditto these sentiments. Truly a great course for the money. If you are up in Plano I'd recommend Pecan Hollow. Great course for the money

Tribute has been in terrible shape. It’s typically very crowded. I haven’t played it with the new greens yet.

I should update this thread by stating that I played Tribute today and found the course to be in excellent condition. I had previously posted about the greens being terrible (when I played it in summer 2017) - they tore out the greens and replaced them in the fall of '17 and everything has come in nicely. You can safely put this back on the playlist.

what's the deal with Texas star or the Cowboys course? These two seem to always pop up when I search for courses.

I will probably be going to the course directly from DFW. If not, then the Meridien Stoneleigh Hotel in Dallas.

Cowboys is a fun course, fairly narrow off the tee so you need to drive it straight. Good test. Lots of elevation on the front nine, and last 4 holes. Close to DFW.

I played Bear Creek West today for the first time and it was a really nice surprise. Everything was in good condition from the fairways to the greens. The greens were cut nice and tight making for some fun on the greens. All of this for $40. Can't beat it.

Bridlewood is back? Heard is was in bad shape for a while. What about The Tribute?

I've only played Bridlewood once and that was a year and a half ago. But it was in really good condition for the middle of winter. I did read where it underwent an ownership change last summer and supposedly it resulted in better conditions than ever. Maybe someone who has played it recently can chime in and update us. I would like to know myself as some friends and I are wanting to go back over there soon.

I'd recommend Old American as well. Lived in Dallas for many years, the golf is plentiful and good but short of Dallas National I'm hard pressed to say I thought the area had a great course.

If you are staying at the Stoneleigh be sure to hit up Nick & Sams for dinner - not the Grill, the regular one on Maple.

I agree with Jungle Land on Old American. If you find that it's a little too much $$, try The Tribute next door. Awesome "replica" holes from the British Open rotunda.

Old America looks really cool, but I'm not sure if I want to pay $150. Texas Star seems really cheap...is it nice? My budget is probably up to $70-80. I'm playing Stevens Park on Friday with some college buddies - I'm there for a wedding but flying in a day early to get a solo round in.

I really appreciate all the advice.

The Tribute GC next door to Old American. Half the price and a fantastic test + layout.

Best course around Frisco right now....Go!

Trails of Frisco

Frisco Lakes

Stonebriar CC

If you care to venture a bit further East, I'd throw Ridgeview Ranch and the Courses at Watters Creek (old Chase Oaks) in there.

Best bang for the buck - any of these courses usually have the better conditioned greens in and around DFW, and all of them but 1 play over 7000+ yards from the tips.

I would also venture to say that Mesquite Municipal might just have the best greens around at this particular moment. Lightning fast, smooth as glass, they tend to run true, and they aren't rock hard. After the re-vamp, this is one of the coolest lil courses in DFW when it comes to character, varying tee shots, medium-long par 3s, tight fairways and great elevation changes.

My BIL played Mesquite Municipal a few weeks ago and was absolutely shocked how good it was.

Same here - first time I played it last year, I was blown away. It's only gotten better since then. Definitely worth the $40 and then some.

I played Watters Creek twice in past month, and that course is in great shape. Greens are softest I have seen in DFW, and they roll true.

Shows how much personal preference plays into this. I played Watters creek a couple weeks ago for the first time and hated it!

The hole that sets me off on that course is the tight Par 4 with the carry over the ravine, pure pace of play killer, think it's number 5.

Grapevine is a 27 hole municipal course and is awesome. Almost always perfect greens and 3 really fun tracks. Plus it'll run you less than $50 on weekdays, only $60 on weekends. It's literally right next to Cowboys. It costs $150 less and is almost as good. (Don't get me wrong Cowboys is better, but not $150 better, imo)

Tierra Verde is amazing. Incredible service and almost always immaculate conditions. $70 on the weekends but worth every penny.

Old American is great, but expensive. I'd recommend Grapevine and Tierra over it to most normal players.

Played The Tribute last week and it was perfect. Fast greens and fairways. Got there @ 6:30pm (I know, late), but Pro shop gave me a great deal for $25!

Front 9 was empty and the weather was perfect.

Wherever you play - enjoy it! :golfer:
