Driving Iron 2 or 3

Recommended Posts

Currently gaming a tour issue m1 4/21 hybrid and not the biggest fan. I hit decent, but I don't think it's really what I'm looking for. I hit it a few times off the tee depending on the hole and few times from the deck when I have 240 to 250 to the pin. Just not that consistent for me.

Looking at getting TM TP UDI, but not sure if I should get a 2 iron or 3 iron to replace my hybrid. Highest iron I have is 4 iron and play driver and 3 HL. Need something in between. Gonna put my Kuro Kage Tour Issue Proto 100x in whatever head I get.

Anybody have any experience between the 2 lofts and how is it off the deck.

Thanks

I would be more focused on the loft than the number. I recently switched up my bag as I wasn't quite happy with my 230 club (5 wood/now 2I 17* P790UDI). Assuming you are swinging X flex shafts, a 17/18* shouldn't be that hard to hit but they will dictate the yardage.

I currently play a 10.5 driver turned down to 9.75, a 15* 3 wood turned down to 13.5 and a 17* driving iron. I found the 17* driving iron at 40" was going the same yardage as my 42" 5 wood. So now the UDI is in my bag for the time being. If you have a 16.5 3 wood I would be inclined to say a 19/20* may be better for you, but I think it would be best to try the lofts if possible, even in a non UDI club.

I have found after much trial and error to build the DI to the specs to give you the yardage you want/need instead of just picking up a 1/2 iron and swinging for the fences..

Best of luck

I was leaning towards the UDI 3 iron since the loft on my hybrid is very similar. Are you getting the same yardage out of the UDI as your 5 wood? How does it play off the deck?

I am. My distances are pretty close but I have always liked irons over hybrids and back and forth with a 5 wood.

Carry yards:

3W 13.5* - 245

5W 18* - 225

2I 17* - 230

Obviously the 2 iron rolls more but I like that I can cover 220-230 with ease. I have gotten a few 2 iron tee shots to carry 240 but usually more at the 230/235. I also like that on 220-240 par 3s I can choke down a half inch and play a "stinger" to the middle on a rope. 5 wood is very difficult to achieve that. I still plan to keep my 5 wood as I love how it's built, just not a need for it currently.

Off the deck, I have no issue and lose a few yards and usually would grab it 220-230 left in a par 4/5. I may also use it if it's 240 to the hole and I can run it up. I just couldn't get that same type of shot with the 5 wood.

I agree with you, I think a 19/20* 3 iron UDI would be best for you.

Maybe I am not the norm

I have a 19* Mizuno Hybrid MP650

and Mizuno MP H 3 iron bent to 19*

I love being able to flight the Driving Iron low or high, but unlike my hybrid I can't smash one 255-260 unless I get some help roll/wind, but my dispersion with this club is much better

the hybrid I always hit high.... hitting it low takes a lot of effort. but I can go after one and I can trust that it'll come out hot and go 250+ and I can back down easily to fill in that 220-230 yard range

As of right now I have the driving iron in.... keeps me in play and great during windy conditions

I would go with a 3 maybe bent a little strong for you

Depends on what you're trying to accomplish but if you play your 17* at 17* and go with a 2I you're going to hit them similar distances.

I had a 712U at 17* with a steelfiber 110I, could hit it 260 off the tee, went too far. Same thing with a UDI 16* with an NV 85 Gram, I swear I hit a ball 285 with it one time.

I'm now in a 19* VFP and it still goes probably a little too far, if you strike your irons well and hit the sweet-spot 90% of the time, you'll hit it too close to the 3HL.

I hit my 3HL off the tee anywhere between 285 to 300 depending on weather and condition, but that club is like a missle. My 4 iron I can carry 225 to 235 pretty solid. I'm hoping the UDI 3 being that it's 20 degrees can give me something of 240 to 250 off the deck when I need it. And few tee shots where I can find the fairway 250 to 260. Maybe bending 1 degree weak will give me that distance gap I'm looking for. Has anyone bent them 1 degree weak?

Also, I believe the hosel is .355 and the Kuro Kage I'm using is .370. Any experienced club builder should know how to install this correct right?

I’ve got that shaft in a Srixon U65. I have both a 2 and 3 iron but turns out they have the same loft at 19.5. One has a Modus 105X in it. The KK launches at least a degree higher. So I think if you want that shaft you can handle the lower loft. Bend it a degree weak if it’s too low. It will only matter off the deck. I can only keep one and have 14 clubs. The 2 iron bent weak with the Modus won.

After looking through numerous previous threads and reading, I decided to go with Titleist 716 T-MB 3 iron. Looks like it will be perfect for my distance gap. Keep hearing the 2 iron is just super long. I know the 3 iron is long too, but should be what I'm looking for both tee and the deck.

Plus me playing the AP2, the look of the club at address looks very similar. Excited to see how that with my Kuro Kage Proto 100x combo is gonna be like.

Just got this beauty back from getting built. Super excited to take this out and see how it performs. More excited that I'm going to be taking out my hybrid.

Anyone hit this combo? Anyone else playing this shaft on their driving iron?
