As others have already pointed out, this isn't a new concept. It's a shame that it hasn't happened more often in the past two decades, but its probably because golf has become so commercialized that it's hard to plan something like this without each players' sponsors quarreling over who gets advertising rights.

Loser has to stand up before dessert at the Masters Champions Dinner and sing either Beck's "Loser" or the Beatles "I'm A Loser" (winner's choice).

 

Then they have to caddie for the winner for the whole tournament.

I have seen Tiger and Phil play in their prime. Don't know if I've got much interest in this.

 

I've never seen Jack and Arnold play in their prime. Maybe that's why the giggle golf with the 2 of them was worth my time.

 

I suppose the interest in it could be generational.

I think it would certainly bring in the TV audience. I would like to see it on a course that isn't bomb and gouge, but requires all of a player's shot making skills.

Celebrity golf, probably not. 10M? I can't fathom who puts up that kind of money for those two or mics them for filtered chatter. Sneed, Travino, Hope or Nicklaus, etc., they are not. I may or may not watch it... its a crap shoot.

I would like to see the old CBS Golf Classic revived. Partnership matches with winners only advancing, no double elimination. Tiger-Phil would be a snoozer unless the course is set up to produce a lot of birdies.

I think the biggest element of this story is how strategic Phil was in his timing.

 

He would lose against Tiger in his prime, and would be called out for a cheap-shot against Tiger in 2010 or even 2014-2017.

 

Now that Tiger has 'got some of his game back' and is making some headlines again, Phil can get away with this. He wants two things, more money and more prestige, and he sees this as the quickest path to attaining both.

 

These are the 2 biggest household names in Golf so I understand the big purse, but I'd certainly prefer it if it was a smaller amount and half for charity. Then more of the focus would be put on the game. Now it makes it more about the $$ which probably isn't great for the sport.

 

All that said, it will probably be fun to watch.

Eh. I mean, I would watch, but $10 mil of someone else’s money isn’t why. I’d watch those two play almost anytime, but the talk about the money making them uncomfortable is just for show. It’s not their money.

 

Show them walking up with their own cash in hand and I’m watching without channel surfing.

Tiger and Rory did a similar thing - sans the cash - with Rory a few years ago in China at Mission Hill. Very cool game, they were mic'd the whole time and uncensored since it didn't air outside of a few select countries. It is on YouTube somewhere.

 

This should be interesting if it actually comes to fruition this time around. Not the first time this has been floated.
