I was involved in the creation of a for TV high stakes golf event and there are a few keys that will help create a buzz. It needs to be or appear to be their own money. Also, the money needs to be there for the cameras. Having each player walk in with their cash and guards would accomplish both of these things.

 

Also, allow prop bets just like they do at home. Trash talk between these two would also be a must.

Sponsor gives each player a $5 million pile on the first tee. Loser hands it over on 18th, assuming it's not match play. That will hurt. If they play match Phil might have to pay up on 14. Tiger 5 and 4. But if it ends early they sell fewer ads.

Let’s not be silly they will never put their own money up . But it would be interesting if they revived the Shell World Of Golf and played two other pro’s each week and played the great private courses that we would never see otherwise. Far better than a one off money match .

Eh. I mean, I would watch, but $10 mil of someone else's money isn't why. I'd watch those two play almost anytime, but the talk about the money making them uncomfortable is just for show. It's not their money.

 

Show them walking up with their own cash in hand and I'm watching without channel surfing.

 

Even if they both brought $1M of their own money I'd watch without channel surfing. If they're playing for someone else's money (sponsorship dollars) then its just the same old boring match play snooze fest that we've seen several times over now. They called it "Monday Night Golf" which was the umbrella that was over top these gems such as "Battle at Bighorn" or "Battle at the Bridges" & "Showdown at Sherwood" back in the day with match play events in both singles and team format. Honestly it was pretty underwhelming stuff back then if you ask me.

 

The only difference now is we have Tiger & Phil now both outside their prime. Yawn emoji.

 

It really does show you where golf is right now when the big networks want to show OWGR # 20 vs. OWGR #82 for $10M... and that's the biggest draw everyone wants to see.

I agree that it's 15 years too late. Both are past their prime. I respect them both as great players. But like Tiger said, big picture. You cannot compare the 2 in their prime. Tiger was always better. Now after years away from the game Phil is targeting him? We all want tiger to knock the rust off & play like the old Tiger, problem is that he's an old Tiger. These guys aren't dominate at the top like they used to be. And there's a senior tour for a reason. Eventually you hang it up & let the next generation take over. This is just a money making plot for the networks. & I'm sure the players will be getting a bigger chunk than $10 million, win or lose.

I don’t care what kind of theatrics are involved, if someone thinks they are playing for their own money then that person needs to have all decisions made for them by a court appointed guardian.

Too much money, suggests to me the money is the hype more than the aging stars, or they just want to get paid.

 

Would probably watch, but not on my list of can't miss golf events for sure.
