Play a crappy course or not play at all?

I usually book my golf online, if I can't find a good deal at a course of my liking, the choice of playing a lower tier course or not playing at all that day comes up. I don't like playing muni courses or any place that is poorly kept up or as I call it dinky (flat or a plain layout). I'd rather just hang onto my money for another day. Anyone else like this?

I grew up playing grassroots dinky courses. They’re some of my favorite places to play sometimes. Of course I enjoy a nice course but I’ll always have a soft spot for playing those dinky courses

I'm a little lucky due to where i live in that there are a lot of great courses around me that are no more than an hour away. I'm also not that picky. If I can get a day to play a round I'm heading out even if it's to play at a run-down loacation

I’d play the crappy course if no better choice but if the greens are bad, I would treat it like a practice round and not keep score. Some people rather spend the time hitting 2 large buckets of range balls but I’d rather practice on the course personally.

I play crappy ones all the time.... just makes you appreciate the great ones even more! give me 18 tees and 18 greens and I usually have fun.

Crappy courses have there own unique challenges. Having to focus when things appear wide open, poor lies and putting on slow bumpy greens. Its all good I'm happy to play when and where I can.

How many courses actually have bad greens now days? Sure plenty are relatively slow (rolling at 8-9), but with modern agronomy I rarely play a course with truly bad greens. And if the greens are OK, then the rest of the course can be so so and it's still a good day.

I appreciate good courses a great deal, but to me there are three factors, quality of course, pace of play, and cost. Of those three, pace of play is probably most important; if it takes too long, I don't have time, case closed. If it's too expensive -- and I will play expensive courses occasionally as a treat -- same deal. The quality of course results from the intersection of time and cost, and I'd play on a slag dump rather than not play. I play my club the most as I can usually predict when I'll be able to get around in good time, but I remember my days of public golf quite well. I never declined to play because the course wasn't to my liking, it was always just a matter of time, so I used to specialize in shaggy little nine-hole courses precisely because they weren't busy. As an added benefit, they were cheap.

I kind of get this sentiment. Time is finite an I don't want to waste in on a golf experience I won't enjoy. It not just the course, it could be more about the company etc.

There are two "muni's" in my city, and both of them are very nice. In fact, I just caddied for my son at a nearby "high end" country club and it was not as good as either of the muni's. Can't always judge a book by its cover.

My city has a goat track that I refuse to play at. Its conveniently located across the street from my job but playing off hardpan fairways is not golf in my opinion. The greens don't roll very well either. If they charged a reasonable green fee then i would reconsider but their rates are the same as the nice munis and semi private clubs around here. I used to play with coworkers at the goat track but now if I can't get them out to one of the nicer courses I sit that round out or go solo somewhere else.

I guess the definition of crappy may vary from person to person.....

 

But yes. I will give the clubs a rest if I had to play my definition of a crappy course.

I would play a crappy course in 2.5 hours rather than the greatest course in 5 hours. No Bethpage for me. How fast the course is playing is a bigger factor than layout or condition.

That said, I wouldn't be looking to pay too much for that test either.

There are some courses that I would rather not play, and with enough in the area, I can usually find better/acceptable.

However, when friends want to play "crappy" courses, I will play. I always enjoy a round of golf with good friends!
