Drones on the Golf Course

Recommended Posts

All drones are required to register with the FAA and have some pretty specific rules governing the use of them, one of the reasons I don't fly radio control aircraft any more (flew more than 30 years) is because of these drone idiots, they think nothing of invading your space for "fun" and in most cases d their best to avoid responsibility for their actions. As for me I'd take it out with the 4 iron then stomp on it when it hit the ground....From my experience with some that fly them they really don't know where it is as they only have the screen for reference, like a video game.

All drones are not required to be registered by the FAA. The only drones that have to be registered are ones you use it for commercial purposes. A drone capable of doing fpv like this probably cost close to a grand or more and tossing a stick or something at it, assuming it’s that close, would probably back them off.

True, there is a 250g weight limit for FAA registration that exempts many "toy" drones. That said, you can absolutely fly FPV with a relatively inexpensive toy drone. For under $200 you can get 1000 meter (2/3 mile) range under GPS control, 150m range under FPV control, and up to 250 meter altitude with a from something like a Hubsan 502S.

If it's something like a DJI Phantom or Mavic, then yeah they're in the $1000 range but you can get a rig capable of covering an entire golf course from the clubhouse for a fraction of that cost.

True, the fpv range is gonna give out before the actual range on the cheaper drones. For those I believe the person would still have to be relatively close. I have a couple (MJX Bugs 3 and Force1 F100) that aren’t exactly toys but aren’t equipped with any bells and whistles just for fun flying. A mavic has like a 7 mile range and built in safeguards that would be more likely used for something like this.

MJX Bugs 3 would be at the top of my list if I was still flying. I built my camera/vtx system to be able to move easily from my quad to my 1:10 truck, so that's what I've been using to scratch my FPV itch lately.

Enjoy the skies!

The Force1 F100 is the exact same as the Bugs just rebranded. Had a 70% off deal pop up on Facebook so I couldn’t pass it up. You can actually add fpv but where the front LED is. They have a range of 500m which is plenty when flying line of sight. I’ve thought about getting a Mavic but haven’t got the itch that bad yet.

I have a drone and it has crossed my mind a few times to take it when I play a nicer course and snap some pictures or take some video.

I would do my best to stay away from other players to not distract them. The noise it make, it would be just like talking while they are trying to swing. Not very good etiquette.

I've been fighting the urge to get a glider for FPV (Hubsan H301S Skyhawk). Maybe when I finally dump some spare golf clubs I'll reward myself and pull the trigger on one.

Ditto, I haven't flown in about 2 years. It wasn't worth having my neighbors wonder whether I was "spying" on them... I'm back to running my trucks and rock crawlers. So much easier to find parts for and fix also, lol.

That sucks you guys can’t do your hobby. Those little planes look so cool!

Dang, some people get really unhinged by such little things. The drone was near by for what? 10 minutes, out of a 240 minute round of golf? And we have those that will shoot it down with a shotgun, throw clubs at it, destroy it at all costs and on and on. Really? 10 minutes and it pisses you off that much? That's less then 5% of the time you played.

I hope you guys don't deal with the public on a daily basis, we'd see dead people!

I paid for 100% drone free golfing, not 90 or 95%. Knocking a toy out of the sky is hardly equivalent to hurting people.

Did you really pay for 100% drone free golfing? Not sure that is on my golf course price list or receipts.

I wouldn't say I "can't". Before drones, you had to go to a big open flight field or join an RC club to fly and planes/helo's weren't cheap and weren't very newbie friendly. Drones allowed for people to fly virtually anywhere, and with almost any experience level which got them banned from most public parks and athletic fields (soccer/football fields). Also, cameras became more prevalent. I could easily still fly, but it's too inconvenient to go back to a flight field or dedicated drone race area if I want to keep flying. I wouldn't want an unknown drone hovering over my backyard either, so for me I choose not to fly in my neighborhood which is the main reason for me to fly a drone. I can have just as much fun with my trucks, it's just a lot more of a limited-range.

Maybe I'm posting too late for this topic but I am a commercial drone operator with full faa license if someone is flying a Drone over you without written permission they are breaking the law NO ONE is allowed to fly a drone above persons, vehicles or private property, without written permission to all persons involved in the filming and yes you can press charges for endangerment. If you shoot the Drone down you can face federal charges of firing at a commercial aircraft so your best bet is to report this to the authorities

20 feet away is ridiculously too close. The larger drones can cause serious injury. I'm throwing a club at it. If it breaks the shaft, that the price to pay. Free drone.

What if you just knock it out of the sky with a helicoptered wedge?

That all depends on how much money you are willing to part with. Lets say you knock it out of the sky with your club and you damage the drone The drone operator can sue you for the repairs even if he was flying illegally close to people. Now lets say you hit the drone and it crashes down on somebody car or house causing damage. Thats even more money out of pocket. On the other hand if you simply call the police and they catch the operator They can be fined hundreds of dollars and if they were flying over you an endangerment charge can also be given to the pilot I hate stories like this because I make a living with Drones and there are to many idiots out there making drone operation almost impossible.

living in SoCal...our conversation about drones is that one day whenever you look up you will always see at least 1 drone then it will grow from there..... sad but it is coming

I understand the uneasiness about drones but yes one day they will be common place flying above your home maybe delivering goods who knows. At the same time the whole amazon delivering your package by drone is actually a complete farce. Can you imagine the hundreds if not thousands of hunters and gun owners out there shooting drones down in search of bounty. It will be a few decades till they work out all the bugs.

Yeah, um, NO - courts generally aren't going to side with an illegal act that results in your toy being broken.

And drones, generally, are not really considered commercial aircraft nor are they protected under the same "you can't shoot at them" rules.

And the cops aren't going to respond, let alone have the time for such foolishness, to situations in which the operator is unidentifiable (like some neighborhood punk hiding behind the curtains in his bedroom).

Be careful with all the ideas being tossed around to damage the drone. I don't know a whole lot about it, but I think it sounds like he was really low. Not sure if there are laws about how high he needs to fly his craft.

I can tell you for certain that laws seem to favor the drone owner. There is absolutely no right t privacy in public spaces. A lot of the pilots are recording their flight. If you throw a club or otherwise intentionally try to down the drone, my money is on the pilot.

Expect to be out $500+ for damages. Super annoying and doesn't seem right, but that is how it is.

You hit a “stinger” at the drone take it out, it wobbles uncontrollably in the air and smokes a cyclist nearby before it crashes. The cyclist loses control and swerves into oncoming traffic, where a tanker truck is coming down the road. Hank (the trucker) throws down his Mountain Dew and immediately moves the wheel all the way left to avoid the biker, he jack knifes and careens into an old folks before it bursts into flames. Miraculously no one is injured.

This is like every single one of my buisness law questions from college, except it isnt followed by.

In which states are you liable for suit?

What defense do you have to negligence in this scenario?

Can Jack the driver of the tanker truck sue you for negligence per se?

I appreciate the debate and i didn't join this forum to argue or disagree with anyone here but as a drone operator i just thought i would give my 2 cents please let me nicely respond to your comment

!. Courts make judgments based on the legality of your argument. There is a rule of court that is called the dirty hands law. if you break the law in the course of your actions to prevent another illegal act the court will rarely if at all side with you.

2. It was not my intension to say that all drones are commercial but you have no idea of knowing and I was basically stating the worst case scenario. Shooting a weapon in the air is what the courts are concerned with not shooting at a drone.

3. the neighborhood punk in his room is just the person I am trying to keep from even flying a drone . All drones over certain weights are governed federally by the F.A.A. So yes if you shoot at them you could face federal charges ( Worst Case )

A lot of it depends on the laws in the state you are in too--- But like you alluded if it is a federally regulated drone well then that may be another can of worms. I guess that is one of the reasons we have more lawyers per capita than any other nation in this world

Thanks I was also a truck driver before i Got into this business. 109th Trans Co U.S. army 8 years Germany Best job too have in the military I guess the reason I got stuck on this topic is because TOO many people are allowed to walk into best buy and purchase a drone and then cause all kinds of choas with it it really pisses me off because now days I spend 85% of my time getting signatures aquiring bonds and the proper insurance just too shoot 30 min of video Most people really don't realize how hard it is to legally operate a drone
