Pivot Help

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I’m looking for some input on my pivot. My hips are too square to the ball at impact and I’m not sure why. I think the backswing is on plane and pretty solid, I just can’t clear the hips and I early extend a touch. Even when I lead with the elbow, it doesn’t help. This current swing is causing me to hook the ball or start it straight and overdraw it. I can’t get the ball to start out to the right and fall back to the target. I’m attaching a video of 4 swings. I would appreciate any feedback or ideas! Thanks

Arms behind turn, causing throwing loft at ball and forcing stall. My idea would be to give the training aid to the family pet and instead concentrate not on the club head but the entire club being an extension of the trail arm. Get the trail arm through first, club will follow, the club head will follow last.

Thanks for the reply. I do focus on getting the trail elbow to come down in front of me first, and it still hooks, sometimes even more. I’ll focus on it more though.

Face determines initial direction...

Perhaps press handle Slightly Forward while opening the face more than youre used to and stick with the motion you have...

My trackman numbers always indicate my face is square to the target but closed to the path. I know I need it to be closed to the path but open to the target for a proper draw. I’ll try the slight forward press and see if that works. Thanks!

If you're playing a draw you need the face to the right of your target and closed to your path...

Example...

Path 3 degrees right and Face 1.5 degree closed to Path (also 1.5 degrees right of target)...

Right. That’s what I was saying. I just can’t get the face open to the target. It’s closed to the path too much and square to the target which is why I have a straight draw/pull hook.

I think your problem is pretty common for guys who don't have enough hip rotation (ahem, like me) and what I have been working on is really a painful process in getting the hips open. It takes a while for the brain to get around it and trust it. It's also very different from the current swing as to what powers the swing at least as far as directional forces are concerned. My old swing which was similar (I got pretty good at hitting even long irons like 3 or 4 with good speed reaching over 200-210 yards) but it wasn't very consistent. Lots of over draws etc. Very inside out path and hooding of the face to compensate. I kinda just compensated that way. It's not the easiest to control but impressive (unnecessarily) when done right.

Anyway, in my quest to be more consistent, my scores have fluctuated greatly as swing changes get in the way, etc. But guys like GG or Lucas Wald really talk a lot about the footwork part and recently it has made a lot of sense for me. I have finally started to get the motion more and how that generates power. The square hip hands whippy motion is very different. You'll initially feel like you are totally leaving your arms behind. But on camera it just looks normal.

However if you don't want to go through an extended period of swing overhaul (I'm not sure if I would recommend it lol) for a while I kept the square hips and adjusted my swing plane to be more neutral (what I felt was outside in). A couple of your shots actually hit the right side of the net so that does look like a normal massive hook/draw.

But if you are just hitting straight draw/pull hooks swing path is important as well as well as clubface. Pay attention to how you release the clubhead. A more up and down proper left wrist action will produce straighter shots (even some fades) vs a release where you are more rotating your wrist to close the clubface (more draw). Proper as in you would be throwing an axe from overhead to straight forward. You would be executing a straight release vs a wrist roll.

Anyway, so really depends on how you want to approach it. More quicker fix or overhaul. It's fun trying to figure it out but quicker with a coach's input.

Try handle forward, face open more, and perhaps flatten lie angle a couple degrees. Motion is pretty solid...
