16 degree hybrids

I have a cobra f7 3 wood that almost never comes out of my bag because I have no confidence with it. When I hit it well, it is a great 250 yard club, however I have no confidence with it. I may hit a huge slice, a duck hook, or just strip it. I have a cobra f7 3 hybrid set to 19.5 degrees that I love and have so much confidence with. I'm quite automatic with it from 210-230 out and outside of the occasional hook, nothing scares me about hitting this club. My question is, has anyone ditched the 3 wood for a low loft hybrid and what was your experience? Any that you would recommend? I saw tour edge makes the cbx in a 16 degree, has anyone played it?

I guess I am just sick of wasting a spot in my bag and I figured if I have so much confidence with a 19 degree hybrid, a 16 degree shouldn't be too much different, right?

I'm currently using a Stage 2 Tour 2h at its standard loft, 16.5*. I've done so both with and without a 3w between it and driver. I could probably get away with skipping 3w entirely, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do so.

When I bought the 2h, I was also testing a TEE Ex9 Tour 16*. I really liked the Ex9, and really only bought the TM because I already had a Stage2 Tour 3h, and was replacing a 2h that had face failure. I could have easily gone with the Ex9

For me personally it wouldn't get close to the distance of a 3 wood. I play a 915hd 17.5 (sometimes set to 16.75) to replace my 5 wood and still carry a 3 wood.

The one thing I would say is you need a bit of speed for a low loft hybrid to get it airborne. I'm 105mph with a driver and struggle sometimes to launch the hybrid

My 16* TL2 four wood is basically a slightly bigger head hybrid. Very easy to hit and one of my favorite clubs. It's not going anywhere.

Interesting. This is the type of information that I am interested in. I have a swing speed that sounds like it is similar to yours. I hit my driver around 280 on average. I carry a 7 iron (33 degree z945) 165 yards. I naturally hit my irons very high and have no issue getting a 4 iron up.

If you like the f7 hybrid why not get another one (2-3) and turn it down to 16*. Possibly consider playing an inch longer than your current hybrid to make up a little of the distance lost from 3w. I played a 16.5* Bio Cell hybrid for a while before the Baffler took it's spot.

For the last few years I've played a 2H between 15 and 17 degrees. Ping G10, Cobra Biocell, Cobra Fly-Z, Adams XTD Ti, Adams Black Super, Mizuno JPX EZ, probably a couple others. Of those, the Biocell spent the most time in the bag. I hit it well off the tee, but not great off the deck. I'm currently playing a Cobra F6 Baffler and feel that it's the perfect compromise between a fairway and a hybrid.

I had thought about this, however I am not in love with the shaft that comes with the F7. It is too light. I love the club, just wish they would have used a heavier shaft in it. I like the fact that the CBX comes with an 85 g shaft. I am currently in the process of trying to find a heavier shaft for my f7 3 hybrid.

Edit:Plus I think the club ho in me just wants to see what Tour Edge is doing with hybrids. I have heard good things in the past yet have never had the chance to hit one.

I ditched the 3W several years ago and over those years I tried off and on unsuccessfully to find one that worked. The closest I came was with a Callaway BB Alpha 815 because the head was so small and it had very low spin. I eventually went back to a 2/3 hybrid. I now carry an 818 H2 lofted to 18 degrees. I hit bullets with it. I would have gotten a 17 but would have eventually lofted it to 18 anyway and would have had to custom order because the 2 stock shafts they offer at retail are too stiff for me. I tried the 816 H1 17 deg. lofted to 16 but it spun too much and was actually shorter than the 818 H2 I currently have.

Suggest looking the Cobra Biocell. I have the 3h and 4h and they are very forgiving . Hooks/pulls only when I put a bad swing on them.

Another suggestion - Adams XTD ti - this club is a missile launcher. Note the stock shaft (matrix - red shaft) is a very stout shaft,

Both of the above can be found for real cheap $$,

If he flattens his 909h at 17*, he can sometimes go at par5 in two...hate to try to pick a 3 wood off the turf.

You can't really go wrong with TEE. I switched the stock Cobra hybrid shaft for a 95g Aldila Rogue. Both are great options. If you like the rails on the Cobra hybrid you might want to look for a TEE Trinity Hybrid. Older model that went through the rough as well as the Cobra rails do.

If Jack likes his 17* 909h as a 3-wood replacement, he should try the 15* version. Awesome club.

In my opinion the best low lofted hybrid ever made is the PING Anser in 17 degrees. There are still quite a few in play on the tours even several years later and they were VERY popular even by non-PING staffers when they were released. The lowest spinning hybrid ever.

I will say this though-- you need speed to play low lofted hybrids. You may find out that you cannot hit a strong lofted hybrid about the same distance as your 19 degree only it will fly much flatter. So off the tee or when you can bounce it in you may find it longer but there's a fine line on the lowest lofted hybrids that many players can play. Now if you have a driver SS say 105+ then you should be good to go unless you're a very low spin player.

Back when I fit clubs for a living I found 18-19 degrees was the sweet spot for the hybrid loft that created the most carry & total distance until you were in the 155+ ball speed range with the driver then you can go down about .5-1 degree lower in loft for every 5 mph. Best thing you can do is tinker on the course with them and find out if it makes sense to do that or not. You might find that low lofted hybrid to be a worthless club unless you're just using it to bash off the tee on non-driver holes. I would say that specific club/gap is BY FAR the hardest to correctly fill for amateur golfers.

It's interesting hearing the comments saying you need speed to elevate a low lofted hybrid. I swing a driver only in the low 90s, and have no trouble elevating my 15 and 17* 909h hybrids. Am I hitting towering shots with the 15? No. But high enough with the 17* to hold just about any green, and its definitely longer than my 19*. I play it essentially in the 5-wood spot when I carry my 3-wood. I use the 15* as a 3-wood replacement on windy days. Easier to keep down than a 3-wood, but it goes low or high off the tee depending on tee height and ball position/AOA. Off the deck it's definitely lower than my 15* V-steel, but not low by any means.

Well about a month ago I used the Mizuno shaft optimizer and my swing speed was 88 mph. I believe it's a 6 iron that they use for the shaft optimizer. Based on that and that I have read that a 6 iron swing speed is about 80% of your driver swing speed, my driver swing speed is 110. So I would think I have the swing speed for a 16 degree hybrid. I guess I will find out in about a week when I receive the CBX.

I have been wondering the same thing recently. I can't hit my 3-wood anywhere near reliably enough to pull it on the course. I'm starting to think that approach shots beyond the reach of my 3 hybrid should just not be attempted. A lower lofted hybrid will likely not give me much more yardage and I'm probably better off placing the ball in a good spot for an up and down than going for a shot that is not likely to come off.

I might just pull the 3-wood and add another wedge. Somehow I think I'm more likely to score better that way overall.
