Brands You Won't Play

CRAZY Shafts - maybe I'm mad because I burned myself buying one of these, but what a friggin ripoff. $600 to make your driver look like its wearing an Affliction t-shirt.

Titleist - Since I started playing 20 years ago, I've always viewed this as a snobby brand. Their products have never wowed me either. I'm definitely happy finding a ProV1 on the course, but wouldn't spend $50 on a dozen of them. So happy to see companies like Vice and Snell challenging this brand.

Mizuno - I'm a lefty.

TM and Callaway - Too many model releases, too many empty promises. Both have the odd diamond in the rough (VSteel, XForged, etc.), but most of the stuff is average.

Driver:    Taylormade SIM2, Graphite Design ADVR

Wedges: Ping Glide 4.0, 46, 50, 54, 58

Putter:    Kevin Burns

Ball:        Wilson Triad

I had a poor CS experience with Taylormade with my M1 440, so at least for a while Taylormade is on my will not buy or consider list. If I did not struggle with 3 wood so horribly, the R15 would get replaced as well.

Was it a warranty replacement issue? My buddy is 3 weeks out from sending his in to get it replaced. Sucks to be without your driver that long in the middle of the season. At this point, he plans on trading it in as soon as it comes back. Vows to not play another TM club.

Ordered mine directly from TM with amd upgraded shaft. Played golf the day after I got it. On the second tee shot the shaft snapped at the adapter. Long story short Taylormade refused to make it right after having the club for about 3 weeks. They finally sent back the head 2 weeks later without the broken shaft that could have been cut down for a 3 wood. So I wemt around and around with them about that and once again got nowhere except they offered me $25 off if I wanted to purchase a new driver or 3 wood from them.

Wow, that's awful!

It's not that I wouldn't play them, I just won't pay for them - PXG. This argument has been beaten to death but I'm very firmly in the camp that believes the price is just absurd for something that's either marginally better, marginally worse or the same as what I'm playing now.

Wow, thats really bad...

I broke a Ping shaft and an independent shop told me to call Ping directly and that they would replace it.

Got in touch with them no problem, first call, not put on hold for more then 2 min. Unfortunately they told me they only warranty clubs up to 4 yrs, and mine was about 5. Which I cant fault them at all for, totally understand.

How in the world could they not possibly cover that? They must claimed it was from misuse? That story makes me not want to buy a TM club and I've never had to deal with their customer service. That's just terrible.

The final e-mail I got said because they could not determine if the break was due to manufacturer defect or missuse that they could not cover it.

Not sure how true this is, but when I got fit for my Rogue at GG, the fitter said that if it had not been an upgraded shaft that Taylormade probably would have replaced it. And that it probably broke because it was installed incorrectly by TM.

Cobra, Taylor Made. Stopped playing Wilson after my last set of forged tour blades and persimmons.

Actually, the only clubs I have played for the last 15 years or so are Titleist and Ping, with Ping being the dominant choice by a large margin.

Edit: Forgot to list Callaway as a brand I won't play. So include any others that I didn't mention as well. ;)

I'll play anything as long as it plays well, looks good and feels right. I've got a full, broad mix of old to somewhat new, across 7 different brands right now. Some brands are big names (TM, Mizuno, Cleveland) some are generic (e.g. my sand wedge is some unbranded thing) and some are semi-known components (e.g. an old Dynacraft hybrid).

About the only thing I'm particularly loyal to, brandwise, are Lamkin Crossline grips. I've used these exclusively for as long as I can remember. I'm sure I would be happy playing with a multitude of any other grips, too, but these things feel good and last, seemingly, forever.

TM. Well i do have a rbz 3 wood (only bc i picked it up for $40 NIP) that is just a cannon but once that thing dies/quits behaving its the end of anything TM that will be in my bag. TP5 is a good ball but not in my bag. if i find one on course i give it to someone or leave it in the middle of fairway for next group to find.

I'll play anything that works and is affordable

This is the most reasonable answer to any question on what brand should be played. So this cannot be the correct answer on this forum. That it all.

, Mizuno wasn’t as friendly to lefties as it is now, Nike didn’t like the look. Yonex wasn’t easy to find in our parts. Other than that I’ve played about every brand that you can buy easily.

I would of added titleist at one time but I’ve had a change of heart since trying the 913D3 and the AP1s 716 and 718. Now it’s my first thought on club selection.

I would not buy taylormade new because they are a bad investment. they come out with a new driver every six months then your club is half price

couldnt agree more, and the products arent fantastic, the irons are a clubs strong so they trick people into thinking they hit a 7 iron 10 yards longer, when in reality its a 6 iron

Their woods are fantastic. Just look at all the players on tour playing them without a contract. And every brand does the whole jacked loft thing on SGI irons

Easy TaylorMade, they cheapen their brand with a new club every 6 months.

Titleist a close second because they never get their special order irons right with the requested specs.

Ping G430 10.5, Ventus Red 60
TM 16.5 HL Wood,  Fuji Red TR 70
TM 7 wood,  Fuji Red TR 70

Ping G430  Hybrid # 22
PXG Gen 6 XP irons 5-GW with MMT 95 shafts

TM M4 54 & 58 Wedges

Seems like a reason TO play Taylormade. Deeply discounted clubs that are relatively new.

For me, I never pay retail. Only used clubs. There is too much of a disparity between on course results and a hitting bay that I need to try clubs out for a few rounds to determine whether I like them. I would take too big of a financial hit employing that testing method after paying full retail.

This thread has been a great read. I will play anything if the price is right which rules out PXG. For some reason I've never gotten along with Fujikura shafts.
