have driving irons become new status quo?

orangeology

Recommended Posts

shiny sub-20º head with a fancy graphite shaft seems a total norm now. had always thought a 2 iron to be for TW on a rainy day St. Andrews.

don't get me wrong pls. i love playing it. can never replace the feeling of a well hit driving iron tee shot (1 or 2 per 18 holes ratio). just wanna have a practical POV where it stands in the bag on my weekly 9-hole muni course where distance-gapping is an idealistic aka meaningless terminology. any shot longer than 200 yards will most likely hit the poor guy in the previous group (straight) or 2nd next fairways(slice).

most o' used driving irons on BST don't seem to have been hit like more than 10 times, while every ad says 'bomber' or 'rocket launcher'. why would sell your rocket launcher for half a price?

one thing for sure is that sure it makes me looking a better golfer in my bag. :)

"is that a driving iron?"

I would tend to believe most people buy them sight and swing unseen and either it works or doesn't. Not many people want to go the avenue of them spending even more money to find a shaft that suits them.. So they dump them.

There are people, I feel myself included, who really benefit from it. I have had a long battle for my 220-230 club between hybrids, long irons, and fairway woods and after long last.. A 2 iron driving iron has been a real blessing. I don't love my PX shaft so I am replacing it with the KBS Hybrid Proto, but it does everything I need. It's an easy 225/230 carry shot and sometimes even longer off the tee. I can choke it down to hit into the wind on longer Par 3s, and I don't have issues with holding greens since I have built it to have "some" spin.

It will always be a come and go fad in my opinion, but for those it works for, it works well.

I think they are very useful for longer hitters. A lot of the courses i play are tree/house lined and hitting a driver gains me no real advantage. Hitting a 2 iron stays short of lots of bunkers and still gives me wedges and short irons in. They are lifesavers on new courses for me when you dont know the line for driver. No hitting thru a dogleg or into a hazard you didnt know about.

I personally can hit a driving iron straighter than a hybrid or 5w so i dont see myself going back. Modern driving irons are pretty damn forgiving off a tee.

so true. even a miss shot goes straighter (and rolls farther) on the driving iron side. high handicapper like myself, driving iron so far works better than fairway woods & hybrid in the dept of 'straightness' regardless the quality of the shots. both on/off the tee.

I have a super super high ball flight. I mean, my 7 iron goes higher than most people's Gap Wedges. I hate playing in wind, because it knocks my ball out of the air a good 30 yards short of what I should be hitting.

I'm hoping the UDI will give me a lower launch/flight, so that maybe it's at a normal person's long iron height, and I'll actually have a club to use and rely on on windy days.

He started using them more than ten years ago, mostly to lower ball flight on the windy courses round here. He also would use a DI 2 iron for a stinger shot that would be about 230+ rollout on not wet fairways, but that was 2 years ago and he has not had that shot consistently like before, so he went with a 17* hybrid since...have no clue about club status? He’s Jack Pearsall, he is status.

I have tracked my strokes gained, and I use my "230ish" club over twice as many times from the tee as from the fairway. So, given that, my ability (speed) to still somewhat hold a green with an approach shot with these types of clubs, AND my propensity to get a bit nervous over the look of certain tee shots, it just makes more sense for me than a hybrid or fairway wood at the current time. YMMV

Is it possible that the modern club/ball combo has resulted in many long hitters being unable too keep their tee balls on the course, hence the need for shorter clubs off the tee? The modern DI is replacing the FW for this role because it is even easier to hit straight than a fairway wood because of the shorter shaft, and is nearly as long because of modern thin faced, hollow construction and lightweight graphite shafts.

I think they are very useful for longer hitters... Hitting a 2 iron stays short of lots of bunkers and still gives me wedges and short irons in...

This is why the driving iron "fad vs. new status quo" discussion is pretty irrelevent to me. They are essentially useless for us shorter hitters. They are fun to hit off the tee, but don't give me short iron or wedges into anything but really short Par 4's, and are completely useless off the deck, except for layups to unreachable Park 5's. In both cases, a hybrid is a better choice for me.

They seem to be the hot trend right now, especially on tour, but they aren't for everybody. You had better have some clubhead speed and be able to elevate the ball some.

For most golfers a hybrid or high lofted wood is a better choice.

I have a DI and hybrid. Both are my 240 carry club. The Hybrid obviously goes higher and the DI, as how I built it, is lower and will run out more. I use both and determine which typically by the course I am playing and the course conditions. If Its wet and I know there is going to be no roll out, I'll typically carry the hybrid. If I am playing a course with a lot of narrow fairways or short par fours, I will typically play the DI. So I use both, most of the time the DI, as I prefer to manipulate an iron over a hybrid if need be.

I used to be a hybrid guy. Started playing a 3 and 4 iron again when I put a set of Mizuno MPH-5s in the bag after trying the older UDI TP, I loved the 3 iron in that set. I have struggled to find hybrids that I didn't hit left most of the time, and the H-5 was a cure. I put the P790 UDI in recently to get that feeling again I hoped. There are legitimately 7 holes on my home course I could use it off the tee due to water/OB/bunkers, and I will normally use it on 3 or 4 per round. If I can groove that 225+ anti-left shot, my home course is so much easier for me.....

I most definitely agree and have seen more Tour Pros with Driving/Utility Irons in their bag this year then I've ever seen.

3 wood and most definitely the 5 wood has been stepped over.

People boo-hoo'ed for years about hooking hybrids, and then pick up graphite shafted driving irons with upright lies and offset, getting charged almost the same amount of money for a new hybrid.

When companies are charging $250 for a single iron...I start to call BS. That's a fad they're making money on.

Just how much performance difference are people observing between their driving iron and their standard forged CB 3-iron? I know how much difference I noticed--not that much. But it gives people something to spend they're money on.

Personally, I'm kind of over them. For as little as I hit my longest irons I'd rather keep them matching the rest of my set.

And yeah, you'd better build some forgiveness into that club-head if you're switching up shaft weight, shaft flex, swing weight, and other critical variables.

Once I get mine in, I'm sure there will be noticeable difference. Considering my 3-iron is 20.5º and the 2 UDI is 17º. I'll take them both to a Trackman and get some results to compare.

I prefer more clubs down low, that and I really like small head hybrids because they provide a ton of confidence in the 3 iron spot. I love my TMB 2 but I have it with C Taper Lite, I still cant get spin down with graphite in it. Its a club that scratches a specific itch, but I do believe that these are here to stay and not just a fad like the "mini driver"

You can find them for quite a bit less than that and yeah ... there is a LOT more forgiveness. I can hit my U45 all the way out on the toe and lose maybe 10 yards. Try that with my 745 4i and it's no comparison. A larger hollow head with a wide low CG sole is no comparison to a thin soled players cavity iron if you are comparing forgiveness.

New in-wrapper U45 & U65's can be found for less than $100 on ebay.

It certainly is very different from a 2 iron from a traditional set of irons.

I do believe that is the point. Long iron with higher ball speeds and more forgiveness

Bingo.

Biggest misconception on driving irons is they are good for launching lasers. Not in my experience - especially with my wide soled U45. These launch effortlessly and high, it's actually quite hard to work my U45 down especially off the tee.

Does buying a P790 3 iron count? Got one on order. Its 2 degrees strong than my 3 iron and assuming more forgiving so plan on using it like a 2 iron off the tee... I actually really like hitting my 3 iron of the tee when I can right now.

Only trouble is I don't know what club I should take out of the bag if I like it and plan on keeping it. I want to keep them all! Assuming I'll need to change the wedge setup.
