Total Club Weight, Benchmarks per Length

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have a scale or spreadsheet showing how static weight progresses at differing lengths? I am most interested in the longer clubs, fairways and such, because I tend to build them significantly shorter and would like a good benchmark from 39"+ .

Another thing to note, I'm sure the use of steel vs graphite changes the numbers significantly, but there must be a rough guide showing how much a club should weigh at typical lengths.

My main concern these days is 3w, it's built to just 41" and plays like a typical 7 wood in length. It's total weight is 395g, 41" and D4. My question is what does a typical 7 wood weigh, steel vs graphite, assuming each is roughly D0? Swingweight these days just doesn't cut it when trying to build the right FEEL.

My ultimate goal is to establish a legitimate range of static weights at 39", 40, 41, 42, etc. I like heavy builds too, so it's really hard to know where the proper weight should be added and how much to achieve a normal balance, especially when using graphite and aiming to simulate a steel shaft weight.

Seriously, no one???

At this point I'd take anything regarding a 7 wood weight. Anyone with a 7w, how much does your club weigh in grams?

I have had similar questions and spent time on the Internet looking for a standard chart or range of total club weight. The best information I have found seems to indicate that the shaft weight is the major determining factor since the weight variances between iron club heads, grip and wood club heads are fairly close within each type.

Based on those assumptions, I found these ranges based on steel or graphite shafts:

Steel Shafts:

· Irons: 150 – 200 grams

· Woods 80 – 120 grams

Graphite Shafts:

· Irons 100 – 150 grams

· Woods 55 – 90 grams

I haven't had chance to weigh some clubs to see how accurate this is - but its the best I could find so far. Hope it helps.

Thought of another suggestion. Go to a site like Golf Works and you can see the individual weights for various heads (woods and irons) as well as shafts and grips. You could calculate a 7 wood total weight as example which might help you.

Thanks, it's definitely a good reference point. I reached out to another well known member via PM, hopefully his club tech experience will shine some more light on this elusive subject. I will post any findings or additional info as I get it, provided they don't mind me sharing it.

Good question, but not easy to answer since shafts of today have different balance point, and we also need to know if the clubs whould be SW or MOI matched.

Depending on shaft BP, and SW or MOI, total wgt progression would be about 13 up to 20 grams pr inch, and just like SW to grams vary depending on play lenght, total wgt progression will be steaper the shorter we get in the same bag.

Thats why we cant use a fixed value as grams pr inch

Examples.

Irons using descending wgt shafts loose average 1 grams pr. Club shorter in shaft wgt, so those 2x7 grams head wgt or 14 grams pr inch, is closer to 13 grams pr inch with descending wgt shafts. If we used AMT Shafts we add 2-3 grams shaft wgt pr. Club, so compared to constant wgt shafts and 2x7 grams head wgt pr. Inch, we must add 3-6 grams from the shafts, so we end up at up to 20 grams pr inch.

as Progression for wood shafts, i suggest ascending wgt with a slope of 5 grams uncut shaft wgt pr. Inch. That gives a total wgt progression of 14-16 grams pr inch, or the same as irons when we use constant wgt shafts and progresive SW :

This chart for shaft wgt progression is very handy to find a good starting point for testing if we have a reference in our bag from a club that feels just right.

Here is another chart that is handy for what you are up to.

Use the values for HEAD WEIGHT.

There is no standards here either, but this head wgts, should be close to "average".

Now add.

Grip wgt.

1 layer grip tape 1 gram

Ferrule 0.7 to 1.5, but now they exist in brass up to 10 grams or so (supplement for tip wgt)

Epoxy 0.35 to 0.5 grams

Shaft.

To make a estimate of net cut shaft wgt, we can say BP is on the middle, and all wgt is disributed equally pr inch.

If the shaft wgt is 72 grams at 46.00" we can say it is 72/46= 1.56 grams pr inch.

Now take net cut lenght x 1.56, and you have a good estimate of net cut wgt.
