The golf wrx video with mike Taylor, he said he hasn't worked on anything for tiger recently.

He was asked "are you grinding any wedges for him right now?". He answered "no, not right now". Tiger could've been sitting on his TM wedges for some time. Also we have no idea when this was filmed.

"No, not RIGHT NOW". Plenty of room for ambiguity.

I remember seeing the WRX page on Instagram being down there and talking about videos coming. Pretty sure it was at least a month ago, maybe two. I know for sure that it was before the new irons went in. Not even sure Tiger had done any wedge testing when they went down there.

I had this confirmed 100% today.... Mike Taylor from Artisan Golf DID build Tiger's new wedges from scratch for him. This is how it played out.... TaylorMade hired Mike to not only do the grooves, but to build Tiger's wedges then Mike sent Tiger the bill, Tiger paid the bill directly to Mike and then TaylorMade reimbursed Tiger. This might make that set of wedges the most expensive set of wedges ever made because it was not a small bill.

You guys can argue with me and say anything you want, but this is fact, it came from the person who actually paid the bill, so, it's a FACT and I'll leave it at that! :swoon:

Mike is the intermediary, he ships the wedges to Miura, who hike them into the Hida mountains to have a former mizuno forger work the grooves. He's blind and does it by feel alone.

I'm not doubting your story and you may not have access to all of the details, but why would MT charge Tiger more than any other tour player? And if Taylormade did this for Tiger, why wouldn't they do it for Rory or any of their other flagship staffers?

We already knew MT built those wedges. Like before he started playing them. What is baloney is that tiger has special tiger grooves that Rory can’t have. Not true.

I remember someone saying that they thought the grooves on either Tiger's irons or wedges looked more tightly spaced than what we've seen in other irons. That was just a poster eyeballing them, but yeah there's that.

Nike grooves have always been a tighter spacing. I play VR Pros and they have probably 5 or 6 more grooves on the face than say a Titleist AP2.

I would say that Taylormade paid MT basically a one-time wedge making fee, then they used a laser scanner to copy the wedges so that they can CNC machine a new set of wedges for Tiger whenever they (he) need one. This way, MT gets paid handsomely for his time and Tiger has new identical wedges whenever he wants to pick up the phone and ask.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Pretty sure it's not special grooves just a different spacing on them which was a design that come from his Nike days.

As far as how much work MT did on Tigers wedges the story is already out there. Taylormade even talked about it in one of the tour blogs or something like that. TM milled the blank heads and MT finished them. Which is why they have the typical TM milled marks on most of the wedge except for the grind areas.

Nobody ever denied that MT worked on the wedges...except you. All it takes is one look at Tiger's wedges to see the Artisan serial number and know that Mike Taylor had his hands all over them. That was pointed out the day that the pictures of Tiger's wedges came out. It was even spelled out in Jonathan Wall's article. I still think your story is missing some pieces though.

Tiger's MG wedges still have the machine marks of being a CNC cut wedge head. The shape of that head came directly from MT though - but that was spelled out in multiple articles the day of Tiger's wedges being spotted too. Then the heads were sent to MT for (possibly grooving) and finishing/building. I think this thread has been blown out of proportion. None of this is new news other than the claim that other Tour players can't get this same treatment.

I guess beyond it's "insider" information what is the purpose of the story? Pro's have custom clubs built all the time, Callaway has built special woods for Phil that no one else can get. It doesn't matter how close the wedges come to being legal, if they are legal, they are legal. As for Rory, you can pay a premium for proprietary and exclusive designs on just about anything if you're willing to spend the money. Tiger may have paid for the proprietary and exclusive design of the wedge grooves so at some time in the future he can offer in conjunction with TM the "TW" wedge and make millions from it.

Exactly. But to act like Rory or any other artisan staffer couldn’t get the same grooves is just not true. That’s what the OP says

We basically found out that a guy makes wedges for a tour pro and these wedges have to be within tollerances set forth by the USGA.

Couldn’t we say the exact same thing about any other tour pro?

This is how the whole fake news thing works....the news in it self isn’t fake but slanded on a nefarious angle to appear as if some juicy underhanded shinanagins are happening.

Lovely, thanks for all the reporting.

Maybe this is a stupid question from someone lacking the extensive knowledge of many here regarding "groovy" wedges, but why are there rules at all regarding the grooves? If all the pros are getting custom wedges why not let them do whatever they hell they want with groove number, depth, shape or materials?

Because the governing bodies want to keep the spin on iron/wedges under a certain limit.

E.g. when someone is in the rough they want them to be penalized and not able to spin the ball as they would from the fairway.

That's why they had the major groove rule change a few years ago. They don't want equipment making up for poor play and superceding actual shot making ability.

Ok thank you, that makes sense, but then the same player uses the same club off the fairway would it not then have way too much spin, and they possibly spin it off the green?

The difference when you're in the fairway is not massive. It makes a bigger difference in the rough.

This may help:

Thanks, these kids here don't get it... there are people here that just might be in TW's inner circle, but I might not be posting here too much longer. I post about his Orange Tensei weeks before the Masters and get lambasted for not citing sources there too LOL, just maybe TW is my source ;).

Well, maybe... YOU are Tiger Woods! 1997 was the year he "speedster'd" his way through the Masters field and started one of the greatest golfing careers of all time.
