Club Champion vs Golf Galaxy/PGA Tour Superstore for club work?

Recommended Posts

I know Club Champion prides themselves on being one of the best club builders around, but what I can't seem to find, is any pricing anywhere.

I'm not looking to get an entire set built with heads, shafts, and a bunch of custom measurements. I'm just talking about minor things that I can't do at home. I regrip everything myself, but I don't have any means to do any shaft work. Most of the time I just need a graphite shaft to be butt-trimmed, or for an adapter tip to be pulled and/or glued on.

Last night I bought a brand new, uncut shaft from eBay. All I need is for someone to glue a driver tip on the end, and butt cut to my desired length. I'll grip it once I get home. I feel like that's pretty simple, and not really something a Golf Galaxy "Tour Shop" would screw up. They are also up front with their pricing on their website. Does anyone know how much something like that would cost at a Club Champion? And would there be any added benefit to paying more (presumably), and having to wait longer for Club Champion to do it?

Also, would you trust a Golf Galaxy to re-shaft a UDI? Sanding down a graphite hybrid shaft and gluing directly into the hosel?

Thanks!

Buy a pack of sand paper, a hobby knife, and the cheapest dremel style rotary you can find. This should all cost you less than $30.

Do it yourself.

A number of people on here can talk or walk you through it.

I would not trust GG to sand down a shaft. Stick with CC or find a competent builder in your area. Ask around at golf courses and good players you encounter. If you get the same name a few times then id be willing to give that person a shot.

Stay away from big box stores unless you know the guy is good ( VERY RARE)

Where are you located? Sounds like an Orlando intersection I know.. ;)

I would talk to the club builders and make sure they have done it before. It's not hard as others have mentioned, and I may get my own club repair setup at some point, but for now I have had good work at my PGA store in Orlando. The prices are getting a little ridiculous though..

Also, as stated above, you can invest in some minor tools and learn yourself. I do all my own work and work for tons of locals after 5 years on this site learning and researching. I own just about every tool for club building now except a loft/lie machine. Even invested in a hot melt setup last year. I've prob invested $350 in tools over that time and have saved myself 4 times that amount in doing my own stuff. GG near me charges like $40 to "save" a shaft and reinstall. Silly prices!

Prepping and gluing a tip and cutting to length is club building 101 stuff. I don't think you'll get anything less by taking it to GG instead of CC. If you're down south you should check out Lenny's. They're a great independent shop.

It is really simple stuff though and you could get set up to do it yourself for not much more than paying someone to do it. You won't have to worry about the quality of someone else's work and it'll be done quicker.

My local GG refuses to do 'advanced' work like sand down .37X shafts to fit in .35X hosels...I wouldnt want them doing any more than a grip install anyway.

Edin Watts on the other hand has a pretty good guy doing club work and he was willing to do the above for me no problem. YMMV.

The one thing that caught me off guard was that they wouldn't adjust the lie angle of my putter. I took it to another guy who does some substitute work on the TM van and no questions asked he adjusted the lie in about 15 seconds.

Most places don't have a putter bender machine.

Jesus. Smh.

Building clubs requires zero special skill set. It makes me chuckle when club builders act like it is.

One Golf Galaxy, PGA SuperStore etc is not the same as another. I've had clients come to me with work done by GG, PGASS etc and it's been just fine, and some where the work is miserable. It all depends on who is working there. Not to mention most of those shops charge WAY too much for what they do. I charge my clients $5 to put a tip on a new shaft and cut it.

Stay away from big box stores unless you know the guy is good ( VERY RARE)

Not sure what you mean. GG is a golf specialty retailer, not a big box store. (Check your marketing terminology).

For the most part, Golf Galaxy techs have solid training in fitting and repairs at industry schools. To check out the capabilities of a GG unit or any golf shop, go inside, look around and see what certificates the repair guys have hanging on the wall.

For an all-possible-options bag fitting, Club Champion would carry the day - it beats everyone else for variety of head and shaft combos available.. But for basic club repair, most GGs do a solid job.

What's In The Bag (As of April 2023, post-MAX change + new putter)

It depends who is doing the work. I've had good luck at PGA TSS and every GG I have tried. Maybe I'm lucky.

Somewhat interesting side story:

I needed a full set of irons bent a degree flat. Nothing crazy. PGA TSS and a local option used a bending iron that put pressure on the top of the hosel, the local option even used the shaft to brace the upper portion where the bar comes around the hosel.

GG went to the lowest part of the hosel to make the bend.

I'm not sure if they had access to different equipment...and I'm no expert having never done this myself...but I'm guessing you should be as low as possible on the hosel to make a bend.

I've seen comments that anyone can do club repair... but box stores cant be trusted to do it.

Would I rather buy stuff and "try" this on my expensive clubs, or take out to someone who has done more than me and will honor a warranty?

Some box stores have actual trained club builders. Far better than your Uncle Petey's neighbors buddy who read a book once and spends his days working in an office.

Talk to the club builders. See if they are "worthy" to reshaft your Cleveland Launcher or Miura Baby Blades.
