Ping G400 Max draw weight

Hello there!

 

I played the Ping G SFT 10 degree downlofted to 9 degree which opens the face a little bit. Tour 65s shaft (100mph swingspeed). With this settings i shot straight to little draw shots.

 

Now ive got THE G400 Max in 9 degree loft. Tour 65 s shaft. With this settings i shot a slight fade shot. If i adjust to 10 degree loft the flight is very high (balloony) with a fraction of fade.

 

 

Any tips how to get back my little draw?

With regards to fade/draw biased drivers, strike location is the determining factor in their effectiveness. A draw biased driver like the SFT uses heel weighting to shift the center of gravity slightly towards the heel creating more real estate on the face that will promote a draw ball flight via gear effect spin (anything toe side of the COG). Without that heel shifted CG, the same strike on a driver like the G400 Max will draw less, if at all. Plus the G400 has a much higher MOI which means less gear effect spin overall on hits outside of the sweet spot, so even if you were to move your strike point closer to the toe you might still not get the effect that the SFT was providing.

 

There are a few solutions here. You can either add weight on the G400 Max on the heel side to mimic the effect of the SFT approach (likely not very effective), you can make a swing adjustment to produce more of a draw flight (possible but not recommended if this messes with your natural swing too much), or you can go to a driver that better suites what you had previously (either the G400 SFT or go back to your old driver).

 

EDIT: I should also address the face angle variable. For some people (myself included), an open face angle at address promotes a more handsy release which can promote a draw. The inverse can be true for a closed face angle and this is a variable you have introduced. Try turning the G400 Max down to open the face angle and see what that does.

I don't think there is a great or easy answer to this. If you are hitting the G400 Max with a Tour 65 shaft too high in the big plus setting (which CLOSES the face) AND it is fading, then either it just isn't the right driver for you, OR it's a swing issue. There is no way that setting should be giving you a fade, all other things equal. The Tour 65 is a pretty stout low to mid launch shaft, and if you go to a lower launch shaft, in most cases that not only won't fix the fade issue, but might well add to it.

 

You say that you used the G SFT before, set to the big minus setting and that you were hitting a draw. Have you considered the G400 SFT? FWIW, the G400 SFT is a very different club head than the previous G drivers or the G400 Max, and I draw it even in the neutral setting. You might also pick up a few MPH's of club head and ball speed due to the smaller club head size.

I found a solution today. I removed the 7 gram weight and replaced it with leadtape in the heel. Now my belowed slight draw is back.

Nice work! I honestly wouldn't have thought to suggest actually removing the weight all together but that combined with the lead tape should create a pretty similar shift in CG to the SFT drivers. Glad you've got your draw back!

Hi Guys,

Very interested to read the above. I've recently purchased a G400 Max as I was able to drop my beloved Project X Black 6.0 shaft from a Ping G30 straight in and similarly my baby draw has been replaced with a baby fade! I have the 7 gram weight in the back also. So my question HaloGuilty is can you tell me please what amount of weight do you now have in the back? And would I be correct in thinking you no longer have the Ping 7 gram weight in at all - just an amount of leadtape.

I removed the weight and the screwe, put them on a scale (7 gram). I play without the weight and screwe.

Put the leadtape 7 gram under the club near the hosel and the drawe was back.
