7 wood over 3 hybrid

I've been considering one for a few years now. I currently go driver - 4W - 4H (22 deg) - 5i, but my 4H is ALWAYS low stingers. I find it damn near impossible to hold any greens with it, unless I land it way short and roll up. The only reasons I haven't made the switch yet are: 1) I'm finding it tough to find a used 7W in stiff flex, and 2) I like how I can hit the 4H out of the rough. I'm not sure how a 7W would handle out of the rough.

I hear that a stiff flex used 7W might be harder to find, but sounds like you are thinking the 4H would need to go if you added a 7w.

I get that a 4H and 7w can sometimes be similar in distance depending on the player and particular club loft and fit to the player. I'm confused...Do you not have room for 14 clubs to still try a 7W, or a 19ish degree club, such as 19* 5W or maybe shortened 5W? Unless you are carrying 5 wedges counting PW and don't want to drop one? I go driver 4W, then 4H, 5H (instead of 5i as you have), then 6i to PW, 3 more wedges and putter for 14 clubs.

Another thought...since your 4H is low stingers, wonder if going 7w, 5H (instead of 4H) might fill your gaps and give the more height and trouble shots from the rough.

Know many like the Heavenwoods. I tried a V series Heavenwood several years ago. Hated the stock shaft at the time (realize the newer ones have more options). But mostly I found the large head, big as a 4W at least and 43" shaft was off-putting. For me, I'd rather go with a shoter and smaller head 5W than that option.

Yeah, I'm running AP1 714 irons, which have PW, 48GW, 52GW, then I have my 56 SW and a 60 LW (which is my go-to 90-100y club) so have no room at the other end of the bag. 7W would have to replace the 4H

How do people find 7 woods out of the rough?

I have a 7W and a 5h (different lofts, I know). I am not as consistent with the hybrid as I am with the 7W and I can cover yardage gaps when I choke up on the 7W, so that is the go to club. That being said, the 7W is not as good out of the rough as the hybrid and that is when I use the hybrid (and pray it doesn't hook).

Well at my course we had about 10 guys with these things, most with speeder 757's .... longer than a lot of 4 woods

I have all my shafts over-length so that wasn't an issue. The lightness of the head can be a challenge if you like heavy swingweights

I'm re-shafting mine - again - and will have the shootout against the g25 (again)

I'm just on a bit of a Callaway bend on woods and hybrids

I carry a 7 wood. Other wood is either a 3 or 4 wood.

The 7 wood is much more effective than a 3 hybrid, for me. My 4 hybrid works great, fwiw.

The 7 wood also gaps perfectly between 4 hybrid and 3/4 wood for me.

Hit em good

3 balls has a few Ping 7's in stiff. I was looking to upgrade my old reliable Adams. But can't pull the trigger.

If you can find a Adams Speedline LP it's a great club. LP stands for low profile so it has a almost hybrid like size.

The problem is wind with a 7 wood.

The 7 wood may fly higher and be more affected by the wind than a hybrid or iron, but it sits on a green much better. not much difference hitting out of the rough with the 7 wood and hybrid.

Biggest downside to a 7 wood is finding it with a stiff shaft.

I bought with a used 7 wood in ladies flex at a very reasonable price and then put the same shaft into it that worked well in my 4 wood. Ended up costing about half of ordering new.

I think people would have more success with hybrids if the didn't always come with 60 gram shafts and with stocks lengths that leave the toe an inch off the ground.

I play driver, 4w, 7w, 4-pw 50, 56, 60 now. I have tried many 3, 4 hybrids but when I am not swinging well hooking tendency of hybrid is much worse than any other club in my bag.

21 degree 7 wood flies higher and straighter and stops faster than 3 hybrid which can be little longer due to more roll. I don't have ballooning issue. When head wind is blowing really hard 7 wood is not the best choice anyway even though you can control the trajectory a little. I am also more confident hitting 7 wood out of rough than hybrid or long iron due to higher loft and forgiving head.

I need to tee the ball really low or even no tee from the tee box though.

7 wood is my favorite club in the bag. Solid 215 and I can push it for another 5-10 if need be. High and soft landing and so easy to fade into a green.

I love it so much I've been practicing gripping down an inch and getting it to just about 200. As odd as it may sound, I can control it better than my 4 iron if I need a fade (I'm terrible at fading longer irons).

Mine is a machine out of the rough. I carry an Epic 5 wood too and it's not as good from the rough for me. The small and pear shaped head on the Titleist 915f just seems to find the bottom even in fairly heavy stuff.

  • 8 months later...

Bumping this thread as I recently just bought a 21* TS2 Fairway. Was hitting my G410 hybrid really well at the 19* but am not a fan of the low ball flight. Need something from about 210-220 out that can hold greens on long par 4's and second shots on par 5's. Got a Tensei Pro White 70s off BST to throw on to see how it turns out. Reading all the reviews on the 7 woods here has me stoked to get it on the course.
