There is really nothing wrong with missing a putt. No one should have to go to these extremes.

I like the idea but they are only hitting the market for those who putt with their eyes directly over the ball, no?

Yeah this kind of tech makes no sense for anybody who doesn't put with their eyes directly over the ball. All it does either way is "confirm" the relative lie angle between your putter and your eyes. It's not like the Seemore system where it's checking for face alignment, which IMO is way more important.

Furthermore, these type of alignment systems really only work if you don't forward shaft lean pre backstroke, etc. It's a very niche type of product.. probably not for most players.

Putted with this at GG today, the insert feels incredible and the alignment aids on the putter are really good. It would honestly be an amazing putter with everything as is and removing the stupid red ball. I honestly may buy one and chop it off lol

Sort of frustrating that this is the only Odyssey putter on the market right now with the RX insert. Seems like everyone almost universally loves the feel and sound of White Hot urethane.

Finally something "new" on the market. All these copycat Anser producers don't bring much to the table. Or they all copy Odyssey #7 style mallet.

Odyssey actually tries to do things differently.

Is it ugly as -ell? Yes, but that's not the point.

Yes, it does someone take from Wilson's Vizor line, but still, at least it is a bit different.

I'm perfectly OK with a plumber's neck Anser of some description and I would never even consider a Red Ball (or a #7 style). But I'm totally with you on this.

How many Anser or #7 variants, exactly, does the world need? Surely there's a few million golfers out there who putt best with something not simply a copy of those two basic styles that 90% of the guys they see on television are using.

Yep, and pretty useless if you prefer a forward press. But not every putter is for every player I suppose.

Not really. That alignment Aide will show you what the forward press is doing to the face. I say that as a former forward presser.

It is interesting to see how much tradition plays into what golfers perceive and react to as positive or negative when it comes to innovation. I did not start playing the game until I was 28 years old (1989). By then, cavity back irons had taken root through Karsten S.’s innovations at Ping. However, not too long after I became impassioned for the game, a new company came along called “Callaway,” with it new fangled driver that was much larger than anything else on the market, but very small by today’s standards. Yonex also had a larger head, made from carbon, but Callaway caught the public’s attention.

We didn’t have the internet back then, so it was not as easy to see perceptions of large numbers of people, but I wonder if the negative reaction to non-traditional equipment was as strong back then. I have been gaming the Red Ball since it came out. I heard about it, was curious, went to my local golf store before playing a round and could not deny that the technology seemed to work for me. I bought one and there has been no looking back. I simply make more putts with this putter and am putting as well as I ever have. I have shaved about a stroke and a half off of my handicap with this putter. Is it eye candy the way that my Toulon Garage is? No, but it is firmly in my bag because it works for me. Ultimately, my goal is to finish each round with the fewest strokes possible and I use whatever equipment that will hep me achieve my goal.

For me it's nothing to do with "tradition" (I play a latest-and-greatest Taylormade driver and some Ping G irons, neither of which looks particularly traditional). It's about visual busyness and distraction. There's just 3x more visual clutter seen when looking down at a Red Ball putter than any sort of blade, flange-back or even a normal mallet shape. And the notion that lining up all those distracting bits "correctly" is going to make me putt better works against any sense of feel or judgement, trying to turn putting into some sort of paint-by-numbers exercise.

But as I said earlier, I'm all for seeing genuine innovations as opposed to slavish copies of the same handful of shape, executed in various exotic metals and finishes. At least those looking for a mechanical approach to the putting stroke have plenty of work with if they get a Red Ball!

I agree. I tried a White Hot RX #2 the other day. They have all the feel of the original insert with better roll. The EXO insert felt dead in comparison.

  • 1 year later...

I for one love the Red Ball putter. When I first set up with this putter I found the red ball in the middle of the circle which tells me I must be setting up correctly with every putter I own so I don't pay that much attention where the ball is.I love mallet putters and find this one is very well balanced and the weight is perfect.I really love the feel of the insert.Feels very firm to me and puts a great roll on the ball.Don't know why there is a lot of negative opinions about this putter.Kind of glad in a way because I got a brand new one for around 75 bucks. If you get the right length that fits you I bet you'll be very happy with this putter. :)
