IMG Worlds Vs. UK Kids Worlds

For those whose kids have played both, what are your thoughts? Which is the better tournament? Which has better competition?

 

 

My son has only played 1 US Kids Worlds and I thought it was a great experience. He is going to play IMG this year instead of US Kids primarily since IMG is local to us which equates to huge cost savings. In addition, IMG is 54 holes over 3 days in stead of 27 over 3 days at Worlds. IMG seems to be a much better test of golf.

Congrats. I think the junior masters 10u are mostly 9-10 year old with the occasional 8 YO. I think I recall your son being 8, so that's. Big deal. Have fun!

One of my buddies has a son who won the future masters last year for his age group. He said it was the best run tournament he has been to. He has done the US Kids Worlds tournament and is looking at doing the IMG sometime soon.

at my daughters age I wouldn't do IMG. For girls in 7-8 its mostly par 3s. That just sounds boring. For boys of course its different.

If you think Pinehurst was hot and humid, wait until you get to Dothan, Alabama in the middle of the summer. You sweat just thinking of being outside.

The distance was definitely a bit geared toward some of the slightly longer hitters on the par 5's, but the par 3's and 4's we felt were all fair. Competition was tough with the winner shooting -13.

 

We had a lot of fun and met lots of kids you see winning tournaments all over. The resort was pretty good, lots of practice space for all the competitors. Would definitely go again if we can. Helps it's only 20 minutes from us. ;)

Yeah the course is relatively flat so there's a good amount of roll. It's a fun course to play, we'd be down to play anytime.

What's the game plan for today?

How much of an advantage is it to be familiar with the courses played at IMG?

 

I know 4 top-ranked juniors in different age groups (one who just committed to a top 20 D1 program), none of whom are from SoCal, and none of them are doing well (not even top 1/3).

In my opinion the course isn’t a factor. If you are good you are good. What can be a huge factor is the grass of the greens and in the fairways.

After doing both, here is how the two tournaments stack up IMO. Note that my son played US Kids 7r old and IMG as an 8.

 

IMG Worlds

 

Pros

- Cost. Its local to me so I can drive there and only takes about an hour.

- Very good competition. Primarily from Asia. I really do question whether the Thai kids are really yrs old though.

- Tournament was well run.

- IMG is in San Diego where there is a lot to see and do for families who want to make it a mini vacation.

- Weather is normally very nice. Very little humidity.

 

Cons

- Players have to register the day before.

- The course we played at Sycuan Resort is basically a muni. Not very good conditions.

- Parade doesn't hold a candle to US Kids Tourney

- Should probably initiate a max 10 stroke rule

 

US Kids Worlds

Pros

- The tournament is just grand. Probably twice the field of IMG so you get even more better players from all over the world- not just Asia. Very well run. Almost feels like a mini tour event.

- Courses are way better than what IMG players play- With exception of the older kids who get to play Torrey.

- The parade is amazing.

 

Cons

- Cost (for us coming from California)

 

In a nutshell. If I lived within driving distance of US Kids Worlds, I would play that tournament every year that my son qualified.
