How deep are you in a golf life?

this thread makes me laugh and scared at the same time.

I'll be the first to raise my hand for admitting that I'm a certified golf addict. But as my wife would also say, there are definitely worse stuff I could be addicted to. As a controlled addiction as when I have the time and the financial means I'd rather be on the golf course.

Sometimes things won't go as planned but it won't kill me. Like there is a golf promotion teamed by a local Radio Station with a 36 hole track next Tuesday. ( $9.50 for golf and $9.50 for cart , promoting the radio station KJR 950 ). I used to get on that every year but could not make it next week. Nice deal with temperature forecast high 70's to low 80's F , blue sky with a streak of white cloud.

Yes, I could walk away from golf when I need to. Not like when I was younger, you could count on me on the golf course for sure.

I spent the last ten years very deep into golf with a family, full time job, etc. I play maybe 80 rounds per 5 month season. It's not easy but it can be done. Make everyone around you aware of your passion and your need for it to keep you balanced and sane. Learn to enjoy playing alone and at off times. Learn to love 9 holes only. Find a nice Par-3 course for quick rounds. And also walk the course - it's faster and the health benefits are a prime justifying factor for spouses.

Similar to my experience last season. Our season was about 6 1/2 months in length and I got in 63 games the bulk of which were 9 hole outings. The playing was only part of it as I was working a couple days a week at the course too, so I was pretty much living the golf life. The clubhouse manager started to refer to me as her work husband as we were spending more time with each other than our respective spouses or at least it seemed as much. Not a sustainable long term situation.

I'm not sure what the sweet spot is, but for me it's less than 5 days a week spent at a golf course. Three would be plenty for a bit of balance and not letting things slide at home.

AS fate would have it chronic back trouble has pretty much scuttled this season. I've been to the course exactly twice this season and one of those times was to spell off one of the regulars who was on vacation. I'm missing the camaraderie of playing with my men's league, but I've managed to fill in most of the time spent at the course in other ways.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Golf has been a part of my life since I was 14. Hard to imagine that's 25 years ago now. When I first started a friend and I would go all day at an executive course, sometimes up to 72 holes. I was a scratch handicap and winning junior tournaments two years later. About that time I also found alcohol and girls and golf lost its importance. I continued working at golf courses and eventually found my way on to a college team (definitely the high point of my golf experience) and competed in some decent tournaments, but never believed I had enough game to turn pro. I quit the team to focus on school, got my degree and headed to Asia for work and adventure. Didn't play golf at all except at a simulator a few times a month.

Found myself back in Canada with some free time a few years back and played 2 or 3 times a week and something just clicked and was shooting around even par consistently - entered a few tournaments and placed decently all things considered. Then got married, headed back to Japan, had a daughter and golf has suffered so bad it's just not fun playing.

Just trying to stay in the best shape I can now, going to the gym, swimming and jogging and trying to keep the weight down, so when I have a little free time I can go out and compete and keep up with my daughter. I've found that I don't miss alcohol a whole lot, it just slows me down. If I was thinking of making golf a career, I'd probably give up the gin as there is no way it helps.

*** An after thought - Golf has always been there. I've had some pretty dark times where golf acted as an outlet I could put my energy into. It could be a bright spot in my life when I didn't have anything else. Playing golf has always given me perspective about my life and it's problems and it can shine a light on my thinking and where I am in my life.

3-4 times will be perfect for me these days, keeps me wanting to come back for more instead of burnout. Trick is to have the days away from the golf course, 36 holes a day is not out of the question if I'm up to it.

It's like with women, a short time apart will make the time together so much sweeter ( if one does not cheat ).

And if you ride the golf cart, be mindful of taking care of your back. Many of my friends started to volunteer at the golf course after retirement and some of them ride the golf cart more than 6 hours a day and all of them had developed back issue. It's the seat and the bumpy ride.walking will straighten your back muscle and strengthen your core and legs.

4 days a week playing, maybe one day at the range is all I care to play. More than that and the rounds don't mean anything so I lose focus and have more blow up holes. Also while I love playing alone, I play much better when there is some sort of stake involved, usually less than 5 bucks, or a club tourney but it really improves my focus. I could not play 7 days a week, not just because it would be bad for the rest of my life, but also because it would burn me out.

had a very nice session today at the range.. modern club and some nice classic woods

back home I decided to cut the old slippery grip from the Titleist acushnet 3w to put a new grip..

I also cut a smile in my left index finger and went to E.R to get 1 juncture point..

no golf for next 7 days (and I have all the week off work for holidays)

for golf I went pretty deep under my skin this time

Hope you'll recover soon..... careful removing the old grips.

Warm them up a little with hair drier and use a hooked blade in the utility knife and cut away from yourself.
