Sunglasses - do you use them on the course ?

Recommended Posts

For those of you that cant wear them or wont.......sunglasses are important for eye protection, I'm 55 been playing for 40 years with them on. I have perfect vision at my age, my last eye exam at the eye doctor, he said my vision is great for my age and says sunglasses are part of the reason. Keep playing without them means you will be wearing glasses later in life. my 2 cents.

I hear you. A lot of excuses within these 140 odd posts. Some absurd and most frivolous. No real good reasons to not try and protect your eyes at all times.

Don't go outside without a pair of my Smith's on. Redmond's. Nice wrap, bronze lenses. Have a brown lens pair too, wear those when driving, just outside, etc. Golf is bronze or copper lens for me at least.

I just tilt my head to read grain with polarized lenses btw..bright is with, dark is against.

I used to wear my Oakley Juliets all the time when I played but over the last year I've really started to fight my contacts especially when its hot so I've finally gotten used to playing in my glasses which are transitions so it actually works out pretty well. With my juliets, I would sometimes need to take them off to read greens but otherwise could leave them on the whole time with no issues.

Picked up a pair of Electric Knoxville Pros for this season and love them. They are super lightweight and dont slip at all. The polarised lenses are super sharp and not too dark of a tint. Basically throw them on at the beginning of the round and forget about them.

I'm interested in these because I can get them with a prescription lens and I like the looks (seems similar to Oakley Thinlink). Question to you or anyone else that have tried these: will they stay on your hat if you perch them upside down on the brim or the back?

I have a pretty severe sensitivity to light. If I'm outside without sunglasses on, I can hardly open my eyes and when I do they start burning, aching and watering and I get a headache. I've got Costa and Maui non prescription glasses (for when I'm wearing contacts), and Oakley prescriptions with the Prizm Black Polarized lenses. I'm waiting for Oakley to make me a new set of lenses, so I haven't had a chance to wear those for more than a few minutes yet. They messed up the script in them (everything is blurry out of my normal field of vision, but if I push the glasses up and look through the lower half of the lens, it is perfect). Should be in in a couple of days. I also just got my new prescription glasses which I went with transition lenses for the first time. They don't get as dark as I like, and when wearing a hat that shades the face, they don't get very dark at all. I only wanted them so that if I knew I was going to be out in the afternoon until it got dark, I didn't have to carry around 2 pairs of glasses.

I've had tons of Oakleys in my life (used to be all I wore), and I enjoy the Costas (lightweight and rimless, flexible so hard to break), but I've never had a pair of glasses that compares to the Mauis for clarity. They are incredible. I shattered one lens in them last year and thought I had lost them so I ordered Oakleys due to cost (prescription Oakleys were $450 including the frame, lenses alone for prescription Mauis were $430, plus frame cost if you dont have them already). Three days after I placed the order, I found my Maui frames. I wasn't happy. If Oakley messes up the new lenses, I might just eat that cost and buy non script lenses for them, and pay for prescription lenses for my Mauis.

I wear some Costas that I got at the eye doctor. If you have vision plan with your insurance you can often get sunglasses instead of regular glasses or contacts. I have gotten three pair of regular costas by using my "free" pair of glasses through insurance. Regular sunglasses, not prescription as I wear contacts exclusively.

Cudos to you for using your benefits, but that’s insurance fraud by your local optometrist.

In order to use your frame allowance, you must also couple a prescription/lens order with it. Not to mention a Costa most definitely has a “out of pocket” price tag on it.

But if you did indeed get them for “free”, your doctor will be out of business soon running that practice.

Here in AZ its a must to use eyewear. I use all the OAKLY Prizm tech from Half Jacket to Zero's and now use the darker Golf Lenses for even driving a car. Really greta products IMHO.

I finally got new prescription sunglasses this year. Actually got two pairs. First tried to get some new Rayban Justin's, similar to what I had in the past, and went with progressive lenses/non-polarized. When I got them, they were super dark, really too dark (I took the advice of the optician), and they really seemed to reflect off of my cheek onto the back of the lenses, made it very difficult to see if the sun was at your side. I had them remake them a shade lighter and add the anti-reflective coating to the inside, the remade ones are much better, but still a bit on the dark side, great for driving in the car, or hitting the ball right into the sun. However, I had an old pair of Rayban's with frames almost exactly the same as the Daddy-O, the frames were in decent shape, I had them make me a pair of single vision lenses that they could pop in the old frames, and asked for whatever they thought gave me the best clarity. I actually talked to the guy who owns the shop, and he said he is a competitive shooter and makes glasses for friends who shoot, and he showed me a lighter brownish/reddish tinted lense that he said would be what I was looking for, as this is what all his shooting friends use. And he was right, I really like what they made for me, distance vision is super clear, so is looking down at the ball, I don't have to worry about the progressive reading part of the lens getting in the way. The only drawback, I can't read my scorecard or my phone very well at all when I am playing.....

I don't prefer sunglasses personally just seems to be slightly distracting when looking down at the ball but after you wear them you do get used to it but I just prefer not to usually. my friend does everytiem though

Don't know how much of this thread you have read, but they are important for long-term eye health as many have indicated.

I don’t wear them in the course but want to get a pair. From what my eye Dr told me, polarized aren’t necessary for golf as they are for snow/water sports as the grass doesn’t reflect or glare (don’t shred me, just repeating what my Dr said).

That said I work on a turf crew full time and caddy part time and always wear them. A little note, for those wearing sunglasses, wear something that doesn’t allow the sun to peak through the outside edges. That little bit of sunlight can have an effect on the way you read greens.

always have a pair in the bag.

lucky that I can use non prescription so the cost is nominal.

we are dew sweepers and the morning glare can be really something.

not preaching but everyone should have a pair simply for decent eye protection.

if you're squinting - that kind of tells you something.

best to all.

I would if the Oakleys I ordered online would ever arrive. Ordered on Monday with the promise of 2 day shipping for orders over $100 but the order status still says "processing" with an estimated delivery date of the 16th.

Have you called them to ask what the hold up is?
