Taking Issue with all the lengthening

Why is it a surprise that a golf course built in 1933 needs to make changes? The off course property they've bought may be to tidy up the neighborhood or to be used as parking. Whatever their intentions, I would like to own the Wendy's and Olive Garden that are still in place.

The shock is that it’s the umpteenth time they’ve lengthened or changed.

They are the WRX course indeed. We all fiddle with our swings and bag setup. They tinker with the course. Going back to switching nines, damming Rae's Creek and so on through the years.

Isn't the iron loft stuff a myth? I remember seeing something in the mags that said Jack's clubs in like '76 had the same loft iron by iron as modern day Tiger & Rory.

And as far as there being a difference in length of these players, I think today's guys are carrying it about as far as the all-in distances of guys from yesteryear.

Tiger and Rory themselves have very different lofts. Tiger plays the older traditional spec based and Rory plays a stronger modern spec. 46* vs 50* pitching wedges.

Yeah and this was a while back too as I think Rory was playing Titleist at the time so modern day was probably a misnomer. It may have been 2012 or so but I remember the focus was on the 5 and 7 irons which matched Jack’s lofts from what he was playing in the mid-70s. I think the article was mostly dispelling the myth that current pros hit their 9-Iron 165 yds because they are taking a 7 or 8 iron and stamping a “9” on it.

Based on some googling it looks like even going back to when he had a Titleist 909 in the bag he was still 1.5-2* stronger than Tiger's set. With regards to the "myth" though, modern "pro" lofts are still about 1.25 - 1.75 clubs stronger and the modern "jacked" lots are a full club stronger than that give or take.

As I said before. It’s 47-48 pw compared to 50. Not even a full club. 90% of pros are not playing “ jacked lofts”. Which would be 43-45 pw. Which is what you describe as 1.75 clubs more.

These guys just want a club that covers very specific gaps. It shouldnt matter that the players lofts are stronger, it just matters what their distances are from the driver backwards. With tungsten toe plugs to move CG to promote a better strike for a player that hits it slightly more towards the toe, and being able to fine tune everything players are getting a level of performance that was never possible for the other generation of golfers.

I was referring to 60's lofts compared to now with regards to the 1.25 - 1.75 comment. I guess it would be more accurate to top that out at 1.50 not 1.75 as I can find instances of 6* of difference between a 60's loft and today's strongest "pro" loft.

I agree, but that is a different conversation. We aren't debating the purpose or merit of it, we are simply looking at the reality of what lofts were vs. what they are now.

I like the change. Everyone hit a wood off the tee last year and they want the players to have to hit driver. Also Augusta likes having easy holes and hard holes instead of 18 holes that are average in difficulty. Kinda like everything is a half par. This hole was always one of those hard holes but now it’s average. I think they want the scoring average on that hole back closer to 4.5

All golf courses should have a mix of holes that play under par, at par, and over par
