Shallowed my swing but can't stop hitting it off the bottom/thin. Help!

I've made significant progress as of late. Shallowing much better and exiting low left/around my body with a good pivot. never really been on who hits a thin ball but contact feels horrible since the changes. Efeels thin or off the bottom grooves. Assuming my body will make a compensation to find middle but want to make sure I don't get into any bad habits. Can anyone explain why or something to try to adjust contact? Thanks!

You can go too much the other way. Nothing wrong with being a little down with irons.

Have had same issue, the thin shot is dominant miss these days

Find that it's imperative to keep left/lead side low in transition, Hip angle slightly down, lead shoulder moving away from head low. The whole "swing down hill" intent. Throw in a slight squat or crunching of body angles, it goes gold.

I've always been steep with shaft plane, body was compensating by going flat, but better cocktail is body is steeper and shaft is flatter.

Could be too shallow, could need more right side bend on the downswing, could be a ball position issue. Could be a combination. Hard to say without video. You also may just need time to adjust. That being said, when you are more shallow, contact will sound/feel a touch thin if you are used to being steep because you are probably used to hitting the ball/ground at the same time. Hitting ball first then divot feels odd until you get used to it.

It could be that your old steeper swing was forcing your body to extend. Now with this new shallowed swing perhaps you’re not flexing enough (hence the thin shots). Just my guess.

It depends if he was working on shallowing out his swing or shallowing out his angle of attack.

1)Shallowing out your swing

You can shallow out just fine and still hit down on irons a good amount. Brooks Koepka AA on a 6 iron is -9 and -3 on his driver, get shallow. Probably if this is the case, the issue is a sequencing one where he has let the arms be to passive and club isn't reaching the ground or the club is too open because of the shallowing move (probably still more a forced than natural) and he has to flip it to save a potential foul ball and he doesn't realize this is the case. Tough to say though without a DTL and FO

2) Shallowing out AA

You will always hit down on your irons, there is no way to get underneath them. The feeling that helps golfers more is hitting the ball then the ground.

First, try standing closer to the ball. It may steepen the plane, but there's been many highly regarded players that seem to think one cannot get too close to the ball in the first place. Closer to the ball will shorten the distance between your hands and ground, making your clubhead take a lower route into the ball. It's worth a shot.

Happens to everybody as they learn to swing. We all swing too deep or too shallow as we transition through the various stages of the swing. It's a learning experience but it time you shall learn to hit solid and eventually even learn to hit thin on purpose as the occasion demands. It's all a learning thing. Just keep working at it and relax through the learning.

Thanks for highlighting this distinction. A lot of threads seem to get confused about the difference.

  • 4 years later...

I'm trying to feel at impact like my hands are as low as my arm hang will allow.  This is different than the general "maintain your posture" and "don't violate the goat" advice.

I find if I keep my hands low, my body stays down through the shot, and I take a good divot with it.  Once you start taking proper divots and see how much farther the ball goes, it can get addictive...

Hate to revive this old thread but i am facing the exact same thing. Have worked on getting shallow and not being over the top with my coach. During practice swings that are slow motion even, i shallow the club and now i can't even make contact. So frustrating, feels like I'm so close

It’s often from shallowing they wrong way by dropping right shoudler.
