9 holes of golf

Anyone prefer to play 9 holes of golf? I have found there are many benefits. Score does not become an obsession, less tired, less cost, less time, more social etc. Some courses make it a bit more expensive than it should be. But, I recently played one course, that just cut the green fee in half, which was nice. It's also a cool idea to drive/explore courses that are 1-2 hours away and play one you wouldn't normally play - in the same about amount of time of playing a local course for 18 holes.

I like a quick 9 after work. I used to be a member at a club across the street from my office, could get in 9, 12 or whatever I hour and a half. Go home, eat dinner and the wife would miss me. Now that course is a housing development. :(

I think that would be good for the growth of golf if they ever did it correctly. I would really be motivated to improve, put the time in, if it gave me an opportunity to play the best courses at reasonable rates. Half price with no hidden fees with the example you give would be outstanding. But the skeptic in me says the resort type courses would never do that and if they did, in no time playing nine would be as expensive as 18 now. Haha. Maybe we better not suggest this? Nine holes obviously works when they already got your money with clubs.

I play mostly on a 1930's 9-hole track which runs along Lake Michigan. 9 holes works great during the week, reasonable pricing and normally less than 2 hours. Helps the budget, family time and allows me to walk (for the exercise). I can't really walk 18 hoes anymore so really enjoy the chance to walk for 9 holes. Wish more courses would offer that option.

Most of the golf I play these days is 9 holes. I play 2-4 times a week after work and on the weekend. Go walk 9 in under 2 hours and then off to do something else. Leaving after 9 has me wanting to play a bit more so I'm anxious to get back especially if I've had a good round. Playing 18 a lot of times I'm tired mostly mentally by the 14th hole and ready to be doing something else. I enjoy 18 when I haven't played in a while but if I'm playing 3 plus times a week....I enjoy 9.

I've gotten so accustomed to playing 9-holes that playing 18-holes feels too long for me. I'd much rather play 9 quick holes during the week after work than labor through a 5-hour 18-hole round on the weekend.

I normally play 9, but occasionally play 18 in late fall and early winter. No pile-ups to wait for, maybe an occasional scratch player with a Sunday bag playing through . . .

I enjoy walking 9 after a workday. Otherwise I prefer 18 or like this weekend: walked 22 holes on Friday, 9 on Saturday after working all morning, rode 18 in the morning on Sunday and walked 18 in the afternoon.

The only time I drove an hour for 9 holes was for a golf league after my worked moved to a new location. I liked the course & league enough that it made it worth while for a short time. Otherwise if I am driving 30 minutes or more it's at least 18 holes.

I only play 9 and I only walk, have 2 new kids. I have a cheap $30/month walking only membership. Thought I would never enjoy it, now playing 18 sounds exhausting and time consuming. They need to build more short 9 hole walking courses around the country in urban areas to help grow the game.

The responses to this thread indicate that there's a theme amongst avid players. We play in the evening when it's not so hot. We play in off-peak times when the course is more open. A lot of us prefer to walk because it has numerous benefits.

I love the idea of more courses being designed with that in mind. I know that here in the Carolinas a lot of our courses are quite hilly. Walking 18 holes is rough, especially in the heat of the day. If you tee off at 10am on Saturday you're drained by the time you come off the course. You're totally done with golf at that point.

What annoys me about playing 9 at some courses near me is they dont have a 9 hole price, just a twilight price, which if you get there at 4pm or 6pm its the same. Only thing is you can finish 18 holes at 4pm in the summer.

Agreed, when the USGA adopted the "play 9" promotion there should have been a nation wide campaign to lower 9 hole pricing. Maybe there was but I have never seen a course with a equivalent per hole price as 18 holes. It didn't make sense to me.

I dont expect the cost to be half of the 18 hole price, but a slight discount would be nice.

Ideally, if you wanted to make the same margin (profit) % off each round, 9 holes would be cheaper because there is less wear and tear on the course, less gas used in the carts, etc.

But the course still has to maintain all 18 holes, staff the pro shop, pay the utilities, etc, whether you play 9 or 18.

So the answer is somewhere between "same price" and "half price." I know you get that, but others... I'm not so sure.

I DO think the price should be half but I completely understand from a business stand point. I run a small business. It's a fine line of getting more people on the course but also making it profitable. There is a great video from "No laying up" on YouTube about a course in winter Park, FL. Everyone should watch it, I think it is smart from a course's perspective and a golfer's perspective. I think it should be the next move for golf to grow amongst the average American.

Courses here in Austin don't seem to offer early morning (first 60-90mins) back-9 deals like in the Bay Area, so I don't anymore.

Used to sneak in a few before work as some courses did do that, but not anymore.
