The liquor store down the street from my office has the Weller Special Reserve (green label) for $30. Anyone recommend? They also have Weller 12 but it's $119 now...didn't that used to be in the $30 range?

Your L store is gouging for sure

All of the Weller line except maybe WLW is under $40 retail

They are all great and wouldn't hesitate to buy if you see it

purchased a bottle of buffalo trace about 2 months ago. opened it and drank a few glasses which was OK but after it being opened since then - I got a very good taste this weekend. very underrated pour IMO.

  • 2 weeks later...

I don't want to boast, but I was very fortunate this fall finding some highly coveted limited editions.

George T. Stagg (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection)

William Larue Weller (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection)

Thomas Handy Sazerac Rye (Buffalo Trace Antique Collection)

Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year

The Stagg, Weller and Handy are all over 130 proof.

Neat with small adds (by the drop) of water are the only way to go with these bruisers. Very deep, powerful and intense. Pure joy in a bottle!

Cheers!

Awesome lineup. I've only had the Pappy and the Thomas Handy (I love rye's as well) and both are fantastic. As for the whole Pappy line-up, I've been lucky enough to have 15, 20, and 23-year old in a single sitting and I actually prefer the slightly increased heat and body of the 15 to the other 2. All are fantastic though.... absolutely top-notch stuff.

I live in Louisville... and for the first time in a year, scored 2 bottles of Pappy... 12 and 20.

The 20 is great... about to try the 10 again. Hold that thought.

Not as smooth, not as oaky... Still excellent

My favorite bourbons:

Rip Van Winkle

Four Roses

Old Forrester Signature (best bourbon for the $, without a doubt)

Those are probably my favorite three... and I've had lots.

Old Forester Signature is my go-to bourbon, whether it be neat, on the rocks or mixed, and its not even close. Amazing bourbon well worth twice the money.

I got a bottle of Johnny Drum Private Stock tonight. I'll see how that is tomorrow (wanted to try something new for Christmas and Drum was about as hot, proof-wise, as my family would try with me). And I agree about Four Roses. What is your favorite Pappy? I still go with 15 but 20 and 23 are excellent as well.

Haven’t tried the signature, will have to give it a go. Old Forrester 1870 fan! Always a staple in the cabinet

purchased a Henry McKenna 10yr on a random trip to the liquor store over the weekend while the wife shopped next door. that's a pretty smooth tasting bourbon.

OF Prohibition Style is definitely my favorite of the group. Very very underrated bourbon IMO. Nice banana flavors....sounds weird but it’s not. It works.

Van Winkle or Pappy 15 yr worth scoring?

For $99-$199, sure. Anything more absolutely not.

How about Van Winkle 12 year

Pappy 15 vs Van Winkle 12....if you had to choose 1.

PVW15 by far. its the best of all of them. The 23 is gross.

Van Winkle 12 Lot B is THE EXACT SAME AS WELLER 12 there is no difference. Do not buy it especially over $100 per bottle. It's a $70 bottle to begin with.

These are the retail bottle prices that the distillery recommends they be sold at. Wholesale price is UNDER this by about $5 per bottle depending on the state/account/distributor. Even though it says 2015 its still accurate. If a store owner says they paid more than these prices from their distributor, they are flat out lieing or they bought the bottle not from a distrib.

I just want to say with jest, I blame you guys in this thread!!

Solid choices! Can’t get Blanton’s where I am. Four Roses was my go to but my local store has jacked the price from $40 to $80 in the last year. Overall, not a terrible price but feels wrong to pay double what I was a year ago.

This is correct and true... Also, Wheaters don't take age all that great... they have nothing to stand up to the oak. I much prefer things like Stagg (or Stagg Jr) to Pappy 15.

Just spent some time in Idaho, where I more easily found rare bottles... Stagg Jr, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, Colonel Taylor Small Batch, Weller 107... good times.

My mother in law bought me another bottle of Old Forester 115 proof (don't remember the dumb honorific it has)... haven't cracked it, but I love high proof and I love old forester, so I'm sure I'll enjoy it... I don't like the price point, but free is free, so it'll be a fun bottle.

Four Roses Single Barrel is still the best value in KY at $29 (when I can find it! Costco or Total Wine)

I haven't tried anything that new or interesting. Wild Turkey Rare Breed is really good.

Sigh,

Just picked up a bottle of John Bowman single barrel. It used to be 39.99. They gouged me for 54 bucks.
