P790 UDI's - Any news on these vs the full set p790s?

Recommended Posts

UDI Back up on TM's site. Custom options only.

https://www.taylorma...-irons#start=2

Shipping date: 09/21/2018

Interesting. I ordered about an hour ago and it said shipping date 7/11/2018.

Well, shipping date is in September. Cancelled and reshaft it is.

With the new ones coming out, I doubt these will be available in Sept.

Agreed. I’ll just reshaft the one I already have.

This club should fit well in anyone's bag who likes long irons and doesn't love their 5 wood, or is looking for a bit more control. Bad shots with the UDI just aren't nearly as bad as they are with a 5 wood. Getting the right shaft is what brings the UDI to life. I hated the stock shaft and replaced it with a DG 120. Couldn't be happier.

Couldn't put it any better. It performs all around and has knocked my 5 wood out.

When I ordered my udi I went 1/2” short and played it like that since I got it

The other day I put a piece of lead tape all the way across the back just on a whim..

Well it just wants to go mid trajectory and dead nuts stright now.. must have just sorted out that swingweight just into the perfect spot!

Is it just me or do others think the P790 UDI is a very different club from the P790. I kept reading that the UDI was a re-badged P790 3 iron at 17 degrees. Today, I had the opportunity to compare. I was impressed with the UDI. Cleaner, sleeker grind on the UDI, more solid feel and easier to work different shots.

Well you're right about one thing, it's not a re-badged P-790 3-iron... :taunt:

However, it IS a P-790 2-iron, so naturally the grind is a bit 'cleaner and sleeker'.. :swoon:

:golfer:

Oh, that must be sarcasm! Just put the P790 UDI side by side a P790 long iron and you can see the differences.

While the the P790 UDI nearly identical in many respects to the P790 long irons, there are subtle differences, including slightly less offset and a a slightly shallower blade height. Compared to TaylorMade’s previous driving iron, the Tour Preferred UDI, Bystedt said the P790 UDI features a narrower sole and a faster face thanks to the L-face construction supported by the SpeedFoam, which is a first-time use in a TaylorMade utility iron.

I shafted mine up with a Tensei 90tx the other day and took it to the range last night. Definitely an improvement from the HZRDUS stock shaft. The only problem I have is that the head is so damn light. I had to add a 4 gram tip weight and lead tape to get it to a D0 at 40". I really want to play it at 39.25 but I will have to add a mountain of lead tape to it to get it back to D0. I was thinking about trying a Winn Lite grip to help out a little.

Interesting. I put a Tensei White 100TX and have it a hair under 40 it plays D3

You're costing me a lot of money...I love the Pro Orange, and will probably "have to" put the white in the UDI and hybrid...Thanks :swoon:

Mine should be shipping out soon, but I'm getting a little nervous with all the talk about how light they are. I've never test out a HZRDUS shaft either, but from what I hear it sounds like something I'd like.

But, I am going through on eBay and adding a bunch of slightly heavier hybrid shafts to my Watch List, just in case I want to change it out later.

Anybody use either of these in a UDI? I have the Rip A in a 60 gram shaft for my driver, and I get pretty good results from it. Both of these shafts are right around/right under $40. So it wouldn't be expensive to test a few things out. The only thing is, I am not a club builder and would have to pay someone to shave down the tips and glue them into the head.

The RIP alpha is a beast.. It has very little feel but is a solid shaft. I had a 105-S and i just couldn't get used to a 2x4 feel no matter how good you hit it.

The RIP comes in .355 as I installed it no issue into an iron heAd.

I have the aldila tour green 105tx in mine and it is great

I have been wanting to try this shaft out in a driving iron, but have not been able to hear much feedback on this shaft.

Agree. It's why I pulled it from my TP UDI. Hit low bullets but felt like it didn't bend.

PF on the Tube did a head to head with the UDI vs. the Cobra Utility and it wasn't really close.

The UDI was at least 15 yards better in carry and total yards... With better dispersion.

Only one guy's perspective but it's a good comparison.

It's not as much as you are stating. The carry difference was 8 yards and the overall distance was 9. I know degrees are not accurate, but the cobra was set to 18 and the UDI is 17. So that extra degree would be 2 or 3 yards. So the difference is about 5-6 yards really.

The overall dispersion was about the same. The misses were more consistent with the P790.

I have a King Utility and a P790 and I took both of them to the range last night. I have to say that the little extra spin gives a nice height with the King, but the lower bullets you can hit with the P790 is really nice too. I might end up carrying both and crank the King up to 20 or 21.

I wonder what the adjustability sleeve will be like for the new GAPR thing TM is releasing. From the looks of it, it starts off as 18º. Wonder if carrying both the P790 2 iron and the new adjustable 2 iron would make any sense, depending on the loft settings.

looks to me would screw that idea up.

nice classic looking ish 17* then huge based 3 iron.

plus what I am learning its easy enough to hit a 2 iron softer to cover the gap to 4 iron.

I have both and I love the adjustability of the Cobra but the P790 smokes it hands down.

Anyone compared this to the Cobra and the X-Forged Utilities? Those are rumored to the best feeling Utilities on the market.

I compared to the cobra and for me the UDI was ~10 yards longer, the King was more accurate and easier to hit. The King is 1* weaker and .5” shorter so all of that lines up pretty well. The King is more forgiving on poor strikes.

My lone complaint about it, and my concern with the new UDI, is the adjustable hosel. I found at 19.5 the King was perfect, any other loft and the lie was too flat or too upright. You can’t bend an adjustable hosel. It’s fine on a driver, but anything hit off the deck is better glued imo.

Finally got some serious range time with the P790 UDI with the Tensei White 90tx. This is the ultimate driving iron combo. I don't think I will be replacing this for a while. I highly suggest everyone put the Tensei 90tx in their P790.

Eaxact setup I have as well and it has been getting far more use than my 3 wood. Great combo for sure.

I just picked one up off of BST with AD-95 on a whim. Only had it out to the range a couple of times, but it's a definite upgrade from my 712u with DG x100. If anything it launches pretty high for me, especially off of a tee.

just picked up the 790 UDI from another WRXer for $165, barely used...has the KBS Stiff shaft...usually I'd get fitted but couldn't pass up the price.

Should probably consider getting on the Trackman with it though
