What are the top 5 courses you've played?

Recommended Posts

And what ones were overrated?
I tend to follow the course rankings each year. I have been fortunate enough to play a handful of them, but have been surprised that my experience and opinions haven't always matched up with their rankings. There is a lot of subjectivity here, so this should be fun for discussion purposes.

So for ease of discussion, list the top 5 courses you have played and list your most overrated course you have played.

Here are my top 5:
Pine Valley
Merion East
Whistling Straits
Doral
Blackwolf Run

I would say that Merion (based on it's high ranking) was the most disappoing of the five. Get my vote for most overrated.

Tobacco Road

TPC Sawgrass

St. Andrews

Most overrated has to be TPC Sawgrass to me but I will say that growing up down the street and working there made it a lot less special to me than it is to most people. Playing it 4 days a week for a year and about once a month all through high school made it very nice but not as special as it probably should be to me.

I've never played Merion, but I caddied for a friend there in the US Am a few years ago. I have to agree with you, I was a little letdown. Not many memorable holes. It will be interesting to see what happens when the US Open goes there.

Crikey. Tough one.

After a fair bit of thought, I've narrowed it down to the following five. I've been lucky enough to play quite a few really good ones, but these are the best in my view:

1) Turnberry (Ailsa)

2) Royal Troon

3) Wentworth (West)

4) St. Mellion (Nicklaus)

5) Woodhall Spa

Honourable mentions to Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale (Old), Walton Heath (New), Woburn (Duke's), Hillside, Ganton, Alwoodley, Trevose, Saunton, Little Aston, Ferndown and Liphook.

Overrated tracks are topped by (gasp!) St Andrews (Old) with the Brabazon Course at The Belfry and Forest of Arden not too far behind.

I've been playing for 35 years and the hardest course I've ever played would have to be The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Kentucky. I played in the Ky. Senior Open there and it was brutal. Eleven players quit after the first round. I would have to think hard about the next four.

Tobacco Road - I see this course get all kinds of rave reviews on here and do not understand it at all. Played it several times and even after knowing what to expect i think it is terrible.

Tobacco Road?? No way, although it is a great property and is in great shape, about half the holes there have some absurd dogleg or blind shot

Some of the top I've played are

Pebble Beach

Harbor Town

National GC

Magna GC

Beacon Hall GC
