Iron headcovers - yay or nay?

If clubs are kept in the trunk as mine are and rattle around and you hear this as you drive, these thoughts come to mind. Put the bag cover on the bag, better-made transportation or better driving skills, or all three. :lol: :beach:

I don't use them and don't think they are necessary to protect the club. But if someone wants to use them, that's their business, I don't care.

I’ve had 2 Ogio silencer bags since they came out. Cart bag and walking. No club chatter so no need for pesky iron headcovers. If I’m throwing the bag in the trunk I just snake my towel around them.

 

And yeah you should always do what you want but know that some people will definitely think you’re a tool with iron covers. Not saying it’s me and not saying you should care..but you should know some people will think this.

I have used iron covers and they do silence the bag as far as chatter. I don't think they cause any more time or hassle as some people say but the reason I didn't like them was my irons started to rust a bit.

Similar to the OP, I have only used hand me down clubs until recently. After I bought a new set of clubs I felt it would be wise to protect them. Of course I have matured too, I would hit my bag or cart with a club in the past. Now, I wouldn't think of doing anything that could potentially damage my clubs. I have seen a meme that had a 'starter pack' for a hack golfer. I had several things in the list and thought 'who cares', I am comfortable in my own skin.

Just bought a new set from a guy on eBay and he included iron covers. I may use them just to and from the course and leave them all off while I’m playing.

I regularly lose my driver and putter headcovers, and onlly use those to protect each other. Having 12 more headcovers in the bag would be a lost cause for me - literally.

I started play in the early eighties, everything was forged and a blade. I got used to keeping them clean after every round and started using covers. I normally keep my irons for 10+ yrs before upgrading. I buy what I want and get fitted each time. When I sell them or trade I get top dollar which helps pay for the next set plus fitting. (My current gamers were custom built in 2002. Still look great). New tech has not bettered these clubs yet. Only the lofts have gotten stronger. So I hit one more than my buddies who buy new sticks every two years and shoot the same scores!

 

I think you would be well served to take care of your investment and take pride in your sticks. Just my opinion and experience. Personally, bag chatter, nicks and dings are like scratches on a car.I don’t care for the look or image that it conveys. The only marks you need to worry about are the dime size wear marks from your center strikes. Go get em! And enjoy!

I've voted and commented previously but I'll post again... just switched back to cast irons and I'm still using the covers. Again, it's 99% to eliminate the clanking sound when cart riding, not really for club protection.

Can't go wrong with covers. Keeps bag chatter to minimum, quieter and clubs look far better in long run.

 

The one set of non-forged I used a while back, X12 Pro model, still got dinged up without covers, so I cover them all now.

 

FWIW, I've had Castle Bay covers for over 10 years, still work perfect...and no, I haven't lost any.

Been playing for years with off the shelf irons and this year I finally went and got a professional fitted set. I talked myself into buying the neoprene head covers just for non-course use (transporting in car mainly) to help keep them nice. As soon as I get to the course they come off and if I feel the clubs are wet after they don't go back on right away.

I wouldn't politely decline a round with someone using iron covers. I'd accept and then mock them for 18 straight holes about being a huge nerd.

I've noticed the overwhelming comments shunning iron covers come from guys who live in cool weather climates who either carry or use a trolley (as they call it). I would love to put their beautiful naked forged blades on a riding cart for a loop with me and see the look on their face after the round when they survey the damage.

Those who are opposed often cite the tools not jewels theory. I could GAF what others think, my forged irons are not all banged up, even after 250+ rounds...I like them that way, as do the people I may sell them to do.

 

I also can't stand the clank clank chatter noise.

Only on my specialty wedges, one of which is forged (Mizuno). My iron set was bought used for well under 300 because I don't own a money printing press or sell drugs for a living. YMMV.

If you use a towel to clean and dry the club before putting it back on, and I do, I don't see how it would cause that.

I say, do whatever you want. Many here will call you a hack for having them, but who cares. My next bag is going to have iron head covers, a brush on the side, ill be wearing cargo shorts, ill have a ball retriever in the bag at all times and martini tees.

After years of battling those things I finally gave up the ghost and said heck with it. I now enjoy being able to see my sticks!
