Titleist 917F2 Swing Weight? Custom Orders

Halebopp

Recommended Posts

Hey guys and gals,

I demoed my friend's 917 F2 on the range and then took a demo 3 wood out on the course a couple of times. I simply loved it as I could hit a single fat or thin shot with it off the deck and it was giving me a very nice trajectory.

I custom ordered mine with a midsize grip but have somewhat struggled with it off the deck, especially hitting fat ones. I thought it's a swing issue but my friend looked at it and said the club felt light to him and he suggested maybe the swing weight isn't correct because of the mid size grip.

We had a chat with the pro shop owner and he said Titleist doesn't care about swing weight in their orders unless it's specifically stated on the order and they wouldn't send the correct weight later if asked. Can anyone confirm this? I for one would've assumed you get the correct swing weight without explicitly stating it on the order? I sent a message to Titleist but they haven't got back to me.

I couldn't figure out what's the standard Tour Velvet grip on Titleist demo fairway woods, would you guys happen to know? The mid size is 53.5 grams. The shaft is standard 43", Speeder Pro 84 TS, 89 grams and the weight I got is 14 grams.

If someone is kind enough to figure out which weight I should have in the head to get the swing weight the same as in the demo club, I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm not really fond of buying the extra weight kit if Titleist really did blow this one. Thus I'd be looking at going to a normal-sized grip but even so I'd need to know its weight.

Thank you for any help!

Have you actually weighted the club (total weight) and measured the swing weight? I would go by actual numbers not your friends feelings.

Here's what I got from a kitchen scale:

The 14-gram weights both came out at 14 grams

Head with the weight and the shaft bolt: 210 grams

Shaft with grip: 143 grams

Total: 353 grams

With the grip reported to be 53.5 grams and the shaft 89 grams, that's 142.5 grams so my kitchen scale is quite close to the truth.

I haven't measured the actual swing weight but I tried my best to balance the club perfectly level on top of a kettle bell handle and found the balance point 31.5-31.6" from the butt end of the grip.

I came across this calculator: http://www.leaderboard.com/SWINGWEIGHT

It seems like the swing weight is in the right range but even slight adjustments (measurement errors) in the numbers can easily move the swing weight around quite a bit.

Does not sound like the SW is so far off that you would notice. From your numbers you in the D2-D3 range. Lets say at worst it was D1 - D4, would it really make a difference?

I'm not sure, I guess I'll need to take the demo 3 wood from the pro shop out on the course and do side-by-side comparison, unless Titleist gets back to me before that. I put it down to just having marvelous days when I demoed it but since my friend brought up the swing weight possibility, it caught my attention and when I held the demo club in my hands after the round, it did seem slightly heavier in the head but that might've been just my brains messing with me, feeling what I wanted to feel.

That’s the lightest mid size grip ever then. Standard tour velvet is 50 grams. I would assume midsize is around 60

Titleist TS3, 9.5, Ventus Blue 6x
Titleist TS2, 15, AD DI 8
Callaway xforged utility 18, AD DI 105
Taylormade p770 4-pw, Project X

The Titleist site didn't get back to me but when I compared mine to the demo 3 wood and tested my friend's 5 wood, there certainly was a difference.

The pro shop contacted a Titleist rep and they'll be sending a pair of 16g weights free of charge but they want the 14-gram weights back.

Hopefully the 2 extra grams will settle it. I still don't have a clue about how heavy the normal Tour Velvet is on the fairway woods though.

Stock grip on 917 drivers and FW's is the Tour Velvet 360, typically .580 core, which weighs 52g. It does seem light for a mid, but the spec for the Tour Velvet mid is 53-54g, so going to a mid should have virtually no impact on your SW. Did you ever put your club on a SW scale? Weighing individual components and then plugging those numbers into a SW calculator is not a reliable substitute.

I didn't as I didn't have access to one but balancing the demo version and mine, there was a slight difference, you could also feel it when holding the clubs and my friend's 5 wood.

Thank you for the grip weight information! In case the 16g weight doesn't help, I'll probably change the grip.

The grip will never affect dynamic swingweight..

comparing your wood to your friend's, check overall length and headweight. If they are the same, then they will feel the same.

Obvious question. If you hit your friends great and the demo great and they both felt great with standard grips.....then why did you order it with a midsize grip in the first place? Do All your clubs use midsize?

2 grams of difference is extremely subtle. Its one swingweight. If the club feels radically different than the demo or your friends then I doubt very much 2 grams will help.

Yes, I use midsize grips, or ribbed, normal-sized grips built close to midsize. My assumption was Titleist would ensure the swingweight stayed the same regardless of the grip so I didn't think of it as an issue.

Don't get me wrong, I do hit the 917 very well most of the time but the other two I hit spectacularly well, maybe a couple of grams will be the difference. In case it isn't, I'll put a normal-sized grip on it.

  • 1 month later...

The pro shop got the complete weight kit from Titleist yesterday, I got it before we hit the range for warming up today but noticed the weights are too long. Needless to say, the weights were for a driver even though their shipping list had the fairway wood weight set on it.

Titleist certainly isn't impressing me with their customer service. They never even got back to me about the questions I asked them through their web site.
