What shot is the best feeling in golf?

MtlJeff

Recommended Posts

I've been playing 15 years now.....And i am ready to state that for me, there is no better feeling in golf than hitting a 3 wood off the deck and hitting a par 5 in two. Let me state the reasons:

1) It's the longest club you hit off the deck, so hitting it solid and accurate and watching it rocket off a long way is a testosterone fueling endeavor

2) It's one of the hardest clubs to hit off the deck, so there is satisfaction in that

3) Hitting a par 5 in two is pretty much an automatic birdie, so that feels nice.

There are probably other reasons. Anyway, yesterday i finished my round (caution, non-passive brag alert coming) by hitting a 269yd 3 wood to about five feet.

I can't think of another shot that would've felt better

The towering drive that seems to go forever

The fizzy pitch shot that one hops and stops for a tap in birdie

The 30 foot putt that you know is good the moment you hit it

The high cut 3 wood that lands softly on the green for an eagle putt

A well struck bunker shot that checks up hard next to the hole

I'll decide if a great bunker shot is worthy the next time i hit one, which would be the first time i hit one haha

I have the bunker game of a beginner LOL

I love a low rope hook around a tree to get out of trouble. Something that starts way into danger and slings back into the fairway. So much that you need to run out into the faiway just to follow it.

Unfortunately I have way too much practice with this. The hook that put you in trouble in the first place isn't as nice.

Agree however I think you need added factors for the "best".

Before I had a bag that has an equal number of wood and iron, I used to go OK with a Cobra Tour Model 2 iron. No better feeling than hitting one of those with a slight draw into a strongish breeze.

Loved all the "stingers" being hit at the Open

The one where you bend down to pick up your tee before the ball is even coming down, you just know right off the face it is perfect.

There is nothing like a pre-apex tee grab and hop to the back of the tee box to both validate the tee shot and instill fear and submission in your playing partners.

f*** yeah.

I once flushed a 1 iron off the deck and I'm quite sure I'll never have the same feeling again on a golf course purely because of the feeling after a stroke. I remember smiling and walking a couple of inches taller for a couple of days afterwards.

I had bought the club for 10 Euros from the pro shop right before the round. Never mind the fact it took me two strokes with the 1 iron to even get to about 230 yards away from the green on the par 5 and the ball rolled over the green.

Just did this last night. Had 252 to middle of the green, carried frontside green bunker, which left me 25-30 ft for eagle (missed for a tap in birdie). It was one of the cleanest shots I’ve hit in awhile. Have to love the trusty X2 Hot 3w.

I hit the 5 iron yesterday morning that that I will recall with admiration many times in the future. 185, slightly up and into, back right hole location. Such a perfect strike, you know, when the 5 iron divot does not even begin until after the tee, perfect trajectory, 2 yd fade, hit 4 ft short of pin, released a foot, made the putt.

Everything was perfect about the shot, except releasing a few more feet.

The laser mid/long iron really gets me excited.

Mid/long iron on a rope that goes high, so pure you don't even remember feeling the strike, and you can hear the thump as it lands on the green.

Oh boy, what a question!

I like the 3w idea because it's rare, it's difficult and it's really valuable when you pull it off.

BUT...it requires a great lie and it's never something I feel is 100% my doing. There's a noticeable element of luck involved (for me) stemming from (1) the preceding drive ending up in a good place, (2) the hole setting up to accept the 3w and (3) my fairway wood swing working that particular day. I don't like the notion that I might've put the same swing on the ball from another lie and had the shot not work out in my favor.

None of that negates it being a great shot obviously, but to me, it's almost so rare that it's more a lucky thing when you get a chance to try it and you actually pull it off. Also, I would almost prefer to hit that same shot with a 5w or hybrid since pulling it off kind of "justifies" my having carried that club over, say, a 2-iron.

So I'd probably vote for a great drive. A great drive sort of stands on its own. I really love a big tee shot on a hole that demands you work the ball. To me, successfully executing a perfect power fade on a Par-4 that bends right is an awesome feeling knowing that I executed the exact shot the hole intended and I was responsible for the outcome almost entirely.

Nothing sends a shiver up my spine like a pured putt that you barely feel off the club that rolls into the cup with such certainty that it feels like filling up the cup with water from a pitcher.

Many are good, few are great.

I can count on one had the times I've hit a truly perfect 2/3 iron.

There's a warm wash of satisfaction when you flush the blade of a 2 iron into the back of a ball and see it set off into a 30mph North Sea cross wind and seem absolutely impervious to the physics of the wind for a few brief moments before it settles to the heart of a links green.

Funny game of golf - you hit a bad hook into trouble, you need to hit another one just to get out. Hit a nasty slice in trouble right, you have to hit the same shot just to get out...

I actually love this shot too

It might be ranked #2

In fact my greatest shot ever was a 6 iron out of trees that hooked over an OB area on the other side and landed on a green to a back pin. I will probably never hit a better shot!

For me, there's nothing like making a pressure putt. It can be pressured for all sorts of reasons:

* to close out an opponent

* a tricky downhill 10-footer to save par

* to break 80 (or pick your number)

* to make birdie or eagle

Flushing long irons and bombing drives are very fulfilling, but posting the score is the culmination of it.
