Premium Balls To Try - TP5x & which two CSx, ProV1 & AVX?

Recommended Posts

I've been playing the 2017 version of the Callaway Chrome Soft and am looking to try some of the other premium balls on the market (I have some gift cards that are burning a hole in my pocket). I'm primarily looking for a straighter ball, less affected by wind and side spin that provides the feel and feedback around the greens from the premium balls.

I'm pretty certain I want to try the TP5x (longer, straighter, lower spin that the TP5 (and great in the wind)) but also want to try one or two of the following three - Chrome Soft X (firmer ball, lower launch and less spin than standard CS), ProV1 (lower trajectory & lower spinning than ProV1x), AVX (even lower, more penetrating ball flight and less spin than ProV1?).

Are my assumptions/statements generally correct regarding the differences between some of the balls and their x/nonx counterparts? If they're wrong, feel free to correct.

Which two of CSx, ProV1 and AVX would recommend and why?

Are the ProV1 and AVX different enough to warrant trying both?

Does the AVX really belong at the same price point as the ProVs?

Thanks!

I loved the 2017 CS, not a fan of the new model. Currently playing the project (a) and I find it to be excellent. I have purchased a dozen AVX balls today and will be trying them on Monday.

I fell in love today with the TP5x, what a great ball! Ive been set on my Cally Chrome Soft X and B330s for a while now but this ball feels and performs better for me. It's without a doubt my next ball and I'm NOT a TM fan. BB

I find the Pro V1 is the ball of choice for me, and it's close to the TP5 in terms of performance and feel, compared to the TP5x, never really got on with the 5x, feels a bit too clicky for me, same with the CSx, although not tried the 2018 CSx.

AVX is the ball i'm using just now though, loving it, keep reading this rubbish about spin and 50-100 yards in, honestly i can't get my head round the comments, does everyone on here spin the ball back like a pro, the fact is it's a golf ball, you get a feel for a course, you then play it for those conditions, i find it spins plenty for what i need, with the added bonus that it doesn't have as many of those massive spinners that the V1, CS, etc have, where you throw the ball on the green and it just stops dead without the expected roll, it does do well with the roll out on those.

Had no problems with the AVX yesterday, chip shots pulled up, full shots dropped and stopped even on greens sloping away from me, cut through a slight breeze with no problems.

Felt great from tee to green

I have always found Cally ammo the best in a wind so not sure you will find anything better. The AVX is great until you get within 50 yards and then it plays like a cheaper ball. The AVX is not a premium ball but Titleist marketing is second to none.

I couldn't disagree more about what you said about the AVX.

You are proving his point with this post.

He meant to say Tour Soft, obviously. Easy typo to make.

big +1 for TP5x. I've briefly tried AVX too and it performs very well, but I prefer the higher ball flight of the TP5x, with no real wind penalty. Fantastic on/around the green as well. Also wasn't a fan of the feel of the Z Star XV, performs well but I found it to have a lack of feeling and feedback on full shots.

I am proving his point because I completely disagree? That makes zero sense. Thanks for your input though.

I have been a long time prov1x user, I have always liked the higher trajectory, important for me. A couple of weeks a go I got a box of TP5x logo balls at an invitational event .. have been sold ever since , They give me Everything the prov1x gave me , But sometimes a bit more ( mostly on the driver ..) . Maybe it is the placebo of something "

New" and possible I Will be back to good old prov1x in while .. But for now TP5x is My summer season ball ?

Countdown for Augusta!!!

Lovin me some AVX! I enjoy the people that are making every attempt to bash the AVX. Maybe demand will decrease and the price will drop a bit. Either way, that is my ball going forward. Have had great success with it.

AVX lover here.

AVX is Incredible have hit them all there is nothing like it

Just wondering from those of you that have played the AVX - how would you compare it in terms of softness/firmness to TP5x, Chrome Soft, ProV1? For example, I think it's safe to say more firm than Chrome Soft but softer than a Top Flight. Is it firmer than those balls, comparable, softer, something else?

AVX is similar to the old chrome soft with regard softness, the new CS is a bit clickier for me

I play 3-4 times a week so I always try to play what ever premium ball iss on sale. Usually I am playing last year's model to get best bang for buck. Been using the Z Star Tour XV which I got for $20 per doz from Rockbottom a few months ago and it is fantastic. Also use Pro Vx ot TP5x and Chrome soft as I have pretty good supply of all.

A buddy of mine gave me 2 AVX to try out the other day and wow. It didn't make sense to me that Titleist would come out with a ball for same price as Pro V but now that I have played it I am sold. It performs as well as any of the others that I have played but the cover is so much more durable. I played 3 rounds with one ball finally losing it in a tree this morning but it still looked brand new right to the end. Hope they discount them at Christmas as they will now be part of the rotation for sure. I wouldn't pay 50 bucks a dozen for any of them but the AVX is as good as the rest for sure.

I'm a big TM fan, loved the TPx line, but the TP5x is just not for me. Seemed like the ball floated in the air too much and didn't get any distance gains like some did. Maybe it's because I'm already a high ball hitter. The TP5 was even worse. I love the CSx. That ball is legit and is great in the wind too. I highly recommend it. I've never hit the AVX and didn't like the ProV1 or V1x.

Played the TP5 for the first time today and somewhat agree. The Tp5 played shorter than the QST for me. But it does have a ridiculous amount of spin on full iron shots. Even my U65 di checked up and only rolled about 18" from the pitch mark on a long par 3.

For those who have played both, is it worth me trying the TPx5, or are they more similar than different?
