Anyone else dread being announced as the low handicap?

Learning how to play to the level of others expectations is a valuable skill that will serve you well in tournament golf. It adds stress to each round similar to playing for a little pocket money. Embrace and overcome that pressure and you will be a better golfer.

All I dread these days is explaining what a plus cap is to folks. LOL!

You are 100% correct. When I played college golf I got uber-focused on the course...range practice was fine...but the passion and focus was nowhere close to real-time action. Good post!

Unless I am playing in something that requires a handicap I tend to add a few points if someone asks me in a casual round. I hate being held to some sort of standard based on my handicap. Some of the people I have played with have a tough time understanding how a low handicapper can have days where they just get their a** kicked by the course.

And that’s why it’s often best not to even talk about it.

There are basically 3 types of people when it comes to this.

1. Those that love the idea of playing with a low cap. Enjoy the good play. Maybe learn something.

2. Those that couldn’t care less one way or the other. Who cares. It’s just a game.

3. Those that really get truly upset at playing with a stranger that’s far better than they are. Jealous, insecure, or both.

You obviously ran into number 3.

I love playing with people in category 1. They often seem to be the most laid back and just out for a good time.

People in category 2 can go either way. They can be a joy to play with or they can just not give a hoot about anything and turn an otherwise good round into a mediocre to bad one.

People in category 3 need to be rounded up together and taken to a goat track out in the country. I've found that insecure is worse than jealous, because they start getting mad about every single little thing, and the anger often escalates quickly.

Whether you're a 0 playing with some 10s, or a 10 playing with some 20s, anyone else dread being low handicap man in a group? Nothing kills a score like your buddy announcing to the group how "good" you are, how far you hit it, or that you are a "__" handicap.

And why do so many people start the round asking everyone's handicap? Unless we're betting w/ strokes, lets all shoot 10 over our handicaps in peace.

Maybe just me

Get off my lawn!!!

I usually ask, "Why, are we betting real money?" and then whip out my money clip.

It usually shuts 'em up.

It happens and I'm not necessarily that good. I hover between the 4 to 5 range. At my club the starter knows me and if I'm playing with guests or new members he says something about me. But 4-5 is nothing really. As a previous poster mentioned on any given day you can play above or below your HDCP. I've shot 73 to only follow up with an 82, we all have. I just shrug it off when asked. It's just a game. My favorite saying is "I pay to play, I don't get paid to play". Play well.

Any low cappers find that when you play with friend who are higher handicaps your score will go up? I love playing with my one buddy but for some reason whenever we tee it up, I'll be about 4 shots higher and yet nothing changes (not using different tees, not drinking more or less, etc)

I'm the best player in my standard foursome. They are all great guys, but two of them break 90 about once a year and the other beats me about 10% of the time. He commented to me that my play gets so much better when we get paired with somebody who can actually play. I've been the clearly the weakest player in a foursome, and my iron play gets so much better.

I was once paired with an old Scottish guy on a difficult golf course (The Bridges in California). He told me where to hit it, and I hit it exactly where he told me. I had a great round, and thought the golf course was fair and seemed relatively easy. The next time I played it was with my buddy, and no old Scottish guy. It was a much harder golf course. Moral of the story, if you want to play better golf, play with better golfers, or at least an old Scottish guy (who was a pretty good golfer). But I enjoy my foursome, so all is good.

I find it harder when I paired in Scrambles, which are usually social tournaments with people who I know but I haven't seen for a while. I'm a 10, so I'm normally right on the cusp between the A and the B player. It works really well when the B is long but erratic, or the C can occasionally connect with a bomb. But it gets hard if be competitive if I have a carry the team too often, or the B is a guy who hits it 220, since I hit it 240 and neither one of can hit it close to score in a scramble.

My personal best... Morning round 91 afternoon round 71...

The one guy who played both rounds with me that day said, "What did you do different?" I said, "I had a sandwich and a beer, golf is hard right up until it isn't."
