It sounds to me like she's having issues with the demands of a tour pro and the issues that accompanying growing up and her balance is off. I get it. I hope she gets her mind right and finds some peace.

Lexi just announced that she won't be participating in

The Women's British Open. She cites personal reasons on and off the golf course.

This bad year for USA Women's Golf keeps getting worse.

I didn't know this was a bad year for US women's golf. Same number of wins as last year just no majors yet. Remember two top players have been pregnant.

I hope her mom is in good health and that isn't one of the reasons.

I'm surprised that more players don't take time off. Sure, I understand that if you're not working you don't get paid, but with top-heavy purses you don't want to be playing way below peak. With all the sponsor obligations and the ever-expanding schedule being a tour pro is a tough job.

Yeah, I never question players when they take time off, if she needs a break, she needs a break.

EXACTLY 100%

We have to remember that first and foremost these are people that have lives we will never see and will also never fully understand. If she is taking time off for personal reasons, good for her! I hope she gets the time away and rest she needs and returns when she feels ready.

If this were on the men's tour, we would be saying it was a hushed up PEDS suspension. lol

Eh, seriously though, she's still a kid. Probably exhausted from her schedule or needs a mental break. Hope she feels better.

I can only remember Korda and Wie winning this year. It seems that Americans are rarely on the first page of the leaderboard and are rarely in contention.

Married to Callaway Clubs but I cheat with Nike Clubs on occasion.

Lincicome won and Annie Park had a surprise victory.

The American wins were very early in the season other than Park, so understandable to slip from memory.

I haven't watched carefully but Lexi hasn't seemed right all year. Not as confident. I thought she would struggle to get over that short missed putt at Naples last November.

But I'll always stick with my theory that the 5-6 height range is a great boost to consistency, and once you detour far south of that like Ai Miyazato or Jiyai Shin or Sei Young Kim, or far north of that like Michelle Wie or Lexi Thompson or Jessica Korda, you darn sure need to take advantage of every win opportunity and uptick stretch of golf, because you're guaranteed to be less consistent than seemingly sensible given the talent level.

I Must admit i do struggle when i hear stories like this

Multi Millionaire, 23 years old, playing a sport (she should love) for a living, never had to "work" a day in her life, what has she got to be stressed about??

Unless its a family thing, which is obviously a different story

To be honest, I'm never surprised when players skip the British Open ... minus the years where historic venues are in play.

1 week of playing golf on the moon, conditions not likely to be even remotely similar to anything you've played previously in the season or will see again later in the season.

Throw in the likelihood of weather conditions as well.

I think it’s because she’s scared of hurting herself.

As dry and hard as the fairways are over there she may break her wrist or tear a tendon smashing into the ground as hard as she does.

I have bad joints. I cringe every time she swings. So violent. Giant beaver pelts flying all over the place. It’s Just Terrifying!

For Lexi to be showing signs of burning out at age 23 is not a good thing. She's not a fringe pro needing to play every week to keep her card, or being burdened by mediocre results - she's good enough to be able to set her own schedule, play when she wants, and contend every time she plays. Heck, she just won a major a month ago. To be skipping majors in the middle of the season when she hasn't really played a ton so far this year (13 tour events since the LPGA season started in January) and when she is in good form to boot is troublesome.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but she didn't win a major last month.

Playing on tour has got to be a grind. Living out of a suitcase. Six rounds a week when you include the practice rounds and pro am. You have the pro am gala on Tuesday evening. Countless hours of practice. On top of that you're playing in exotic locations such as Grand Rapids, Green Bay, and Rogers.

She's in her 7th season. There are obviously pressures that go with being the top American golfer. 'Better this than getting completely burnt out. I hope she gets a good rest, and comes back rejuvenated.

Anecdotally it feels like a bad year at least to me even if the numbers don’t back it up. Plus with several tourneys having weather issues it’s been an odd year overall IMO.

I tend to feel for the players anytime I see them in schmooze mode. For me that would be the absolute worst most tiresome aspect of the job. I imagine it being even worse for a young LPGA'er tasked with entertaining a bunch of shlubby middle-age/old guys.

Sounds to me like she just doesn’t want to go overseas if she’s planning on playing the very next event after that. She’s had decent success in the British but it might just be something she doesn’t feel like doing right now due to a little mental or physical fatigue. This is probably not about extreme burn out and serious personal issues at least as best as I can tell right now.

The problem is that whenever someone WDs from something like this they face criticism so there’s probably a feeling that they have to release a statement and make the rationale behind it sound “serious” so as to avoid any blowback. When all she probably really wants is to rest for a couple of weeks and not have to take a long trip and all that entails.

As much as I hate speculating there could be some truth to this, I've heard on broadcasts and from her mouth this season that she is experiencing some wrist issues and other nagging stuff. I can't imagine with the trenches Lexi digs using her irons feels very good on the links course. It's probably like trying to take a divot out of concrete and I imagine it could do lots of damage over 36-72 holes if there is an existing problem.

If my mother was ill with cancer and I was worried about not having her around in the long term I would spend as much time with her as I could. The continuous worry would make golf harder than it already is.

Exactly. Sometimes we look at athletes and forget they're real people like us with families and issues that money can't solve. Lexi is just 23 maybe she's going through a relationship issue, her Mom's health, etc. Who of us hasn't been impacted in our job, sometime, by life's events? The difference is she's a public figure so she can't just go away for a bit without an explanation.

Kudos to her for realizing there is an issue and dealing with it.
