Bucket hats

Recommended Posts

Thanks to all for the recommendations. I've been needing to switch to a bucket hat to protect my ears and neck. I ordered a Shelta hat today - looking forward to being cooler and better protected.

I have been wearing straw type hats the last couple of years during the summer, but they don't last too long. I have a Tilley that I really like, but it will heat up the head on really hot days. The Imperial coolcore Old Norse hat that was mentioned on the first page of this post looks like a great hat for the summer heat.

But I just happened to be shopping in Lake Tahoe last week and came across the Shelta hat, also mentioned earlier. A little pricey at $65, but bought the Seahawk version and wore it three days at the Celebrity Tournament and also for a round of golf that started out hot and sunny and turned into a thunder storm on the back nine (actually everyone got called in to club house for about 45 min. until it passed). Love it! Light weight, breathable and holds up in wind and rain. Almost the perfect hat.

After reading this thread, I have noticed that there are more people on the golf course wearing bucket type hats than I would have previously thought.

Great to see people hopping on the Shelta hat train. They really are an almost perfect sun hat. So good that I brought them into my proshop to sell. They weren't even designed for golf, as Shelta designed the hat for paddleboarding/kayaking/surfing/boating/fishing. But the traits that make it so good for those hobbies make it excellent for golf, too. And the owner/founder of the company is a great guy to work with. My clientele have started eating them up. Such a dramatic change from traditional floppy, cheaply made golf sun hats.

I picked up a Kuhl hat last night at REI in case my Shelta doesn't make it in time for the member guest I'm playing in next week. Played 18 with it today and really liked it - surprisingly easy adjustment after wearing baseball style caps for years. I wish I would have made the switch years ago.

Nike Golf has had cool bucket releases from time to time. I love my clapping/praying hands buckets. have a few of their reversible buckets in a couple color ways as well.

love the traditional more smaller brimmed buckets from any golf brand. i wear them more for style than function. but I can see how others would appreciate the longer and wider brims as protection from the sun.

I prefer a hat of any style for a day on the course over putting sunscreen on my entire head. I make enough of a mess applying it to my face, neck, and limbs.

This has been the most fabulous golf hat for me. It is a wide brimmed recommended by my dermatologist as she has removed a few minor pre-cancer cells from my face. It is cool feeling and stylish too. I have had it 2 years and it still looks brand new. Nice and light as well. https://www.amazon.c...customerReviews

That's a very stylish hat IMO...I like!

I like that one too, but can't find it in my size (7-3/4).

Love the bucket hats, and damn those Shelters look nice....not sure if the Osprey or the Seahawk is better for golf ? For those that have wore both, your opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you

I like the Seahawk just a little better (I own a Seahawk, Osprey, and Raptor), but that's the beauty of Shelta. The different brim widths allow you to get a model that's just what you want, whether that's a wider brim, or narrow if the brim happens to interfere with your swing or follow thru. I did bring both the Osprey and Seahawk into my proshop to sell, and the Seahawk is favored just a little bit more. In particular the sand dune color.

Thank you for that info. Do u like the wider brim for the protection or does it just look better ?

I like it for the wider brim mainly. I actually think the narrower side brim of the Osprey looks better. I honestly think the best compromise on brim width is the Raptor, but I don't like the more rounded crown shape of the Raptor as much as the more Boonie style crown of the Osprey and Seahawk. If they would make a Raptor with the Seahawk crown, it would be the one I'd wear the most.

There is a Raptor V2 coming out next year, it might be what you want !

I've seen it. The crown still isn't my favorite style.

Question for the bucket hat users, particularly the Shelta users. How do these types of hats work with sunglasses? I wear prescription Flak Jackets with the arms of the glasses on the outside of my baseball style hat. Just wondering how these bucket type hats would work.

If you fit the Shelta correctly, sure. When fitting, you should be able to fit 1-2 fingers between your temple and the inside of the hat/hat band. This would give you enough room/slack for the earstems of your Oakleys to ride under the hat if necessary. And since the Sheltas have a fit adjustment cinch in the back of the hat, you could always tighten it a bit when not wearing your glasses if you chose to.

I have the Nike UV bucket hat on the way. Can’t wait for it to arrive!

I just ordered the white one today, always wear Nike ball caps but thought I’d give a bucket a try. If I like it I’ll pick up the other colors.

NewEra makes a really nice one that I grabbed working the WPGA at Kemper Lakes.

that week was mid 90 degree temps and this replaced the standard issue ballcap.

modest brim size, breathable mesh, holds shape well, color white.

darned if I can find it on their website though.

maybe it's something only sold with 3rd party logos. mine has the WPGA stitching and cost $20 at the tournament.

found one here so you can see the style.

some of you may have better search results for a generic one. .

I'd recommend this type to everyone that may have hesitated to make to switch to a bucket type.

I played in a member-guest the past 3 days and had the chance to compare the Shelta and Kuhl hats I recently purchased. The Kuhl lived up to its name - it was cooler than the Shelta, though the Shelta wasn't ever uncomfortable. The "mesh" in the top of the Kuhl allows for venting as well as any breeze to enter the hat. (As an aside, I noticed that out of the 71 other players, none of them wore a bucket hat - everyone else wore baseball style hats, which was surprising to see.)
