Hybrids disappearing? What to use between 3 iron and 3 wood

I feel like better players are using less and less hybrids. A miss with a three iron just comes off slightly short but close to the target line. A hybrid miss can snap left and in trouble. I don’t have swing speed for a two iron though. My 3 iron is a p790 3 iron dgs300. What club to fill the gap?

I don't find a miss any worse off with a hybrid than an iron. A "better" player if he's squaring the club path isn't going to hit snap hooks with any club.

I rotate between everything, a driving iron (actually just a strong lifted GI iron) a true hybrid, and a G20 halfsie

I actually prefer the hybrid for overall performance and find it the most forgiving

Jeff and I are on the same page. I used a 5-wood for a while, and a driving iron the last time that fad swept through, but the last couple of seasons I've found my hybrid to be the most versatile.

I have a 17 degree 2 iron that I use and absolutely love. It’s something that I can use off a tee or ground. It’s a perfect middle group between the 3 wood and 3 iron. It’s almost got me wanting to stop using my 3 wood all together due to its length.

It’s whatever suits best. I’ve tried lots of hybrids but just can’t get on with them. 5 woods are much better these days in terms of lower spin. I’ve just ordered a new 2 iron, my home course is usually windy and I like hitting it low.

Tungsten has really helped with the current long irons/driving irons.

going through a similar situation. Played 2 hybrids.

but recently replace the 4 wood with a 3 wood thats carry long.

So my gap is bigger now.

Just ordered an adjustable Epic SZ 5 wood ( the Rogue is too long and not adjustable)

Will get on a sim once it arrives and dial in the head and one hybrid.

I like having both a hybrid and a driving iron. Helps when picking a club for me anyways.

The anser hybrid is a few years old but has a reputation as anti hook. Pretty sure Kucher is still playing it.

He used the G400 hybrid at the Open.

if the MP H4 3 iron in my bad isn't a hybrid i don't know what is.

all these things are "hybrids". well, they're all actually "controllers", which is basically the Hammer's grandpappy - ordered out of the back of Golf magazines for years...

Hybrids continue to grow in popularity because they are just much easier to hit off the deck than long irons.

However, I do expect the current fascination with Driving Irons to gradually fade away...

It all depends on what you're looking for in terms of ball flight and distance...

If you have a wood, hybrid, and driving iron all with similar set ups, then generally:

-the wood will fly higher, with more spin, land softly, and be very forgiving

-the driving iron will have a flatter ball flight, less spin, run out more, and be way less forgiving

-the hybrid will be in between the two in terms of flight, spin, and forgiveness

I've never found that the hybrids I've played favored hooks... I've hit just as many left as I've hit right with the hybrids I've used. Maybe that's because I tend to play the better player version of hybrids. I settled on a driving iron because my swing naturally produces a high, spinny shot and I was looking for something I could hit low (especially in to the wind). I will say I've given up some forgiveness in going from a hybrid to a driving iron, especially off of the fairway, but it was a trade off I was willing to make to get the ball flight I wanted.

It probably will just because us amateurs are stupid and never happy. A driving iron can be a great weapon if you have one that fits you and you are smart enough to not try to get more from it than you should.

I fall in this "stupid" category because today was my first round with my U65 3 iron and it felt amazing and was consistently 220-235 down the middle. Yet on the way home the idiot in me was thinking "I wonder how far I could hit the U65 2 iron?"

Having read through hundreds of these driving iron posts, I think it comes down to two main groups of people.

1) the group that buys a driving iron wanting/expecting it to be this low spin low launch monster.

2) the group that builds it to be a certain yardage or replace a club.

Regardless of ability, from the posts I have seen group 2 is more successful in that they have found a club head and shaft combo that works, and gives them what they need.

I love my P790 with PX 85 since it replaces my 5 wood. I get the same distance carry deck or tee, at 2” shorter playing length, and an iron head. I did try to get a 1 iron UDI and found I could not play it off the deck but it was fine off the tee. I tried to build that to replace my 3 wood but it wasn’t close in forgiveness or dispersion.

I have zero plans to sell my P790 and have given up building a “distance driving iron.” To each their own, but there is a group out there that this is not a fad for.

I'm using an NV105, no reason a SteelFiber i110 or i125 wouldn't also do the same thing...

I've been fighting the same thing, and no matter what people say, I can have the heaviest and stiffest shaft in a hybrid and I'll hit hooks with it (thats everything but my sweetums, little 9013 23* with a NV 105 in it). I've fought through dozens of 2-3 hybrids trying to find that sweet 230 shot I need to fit in between my 250 3 wood and my 210 sweetums.

So with that all said, I've actually ended up putting the 5 wood back in the bag because it doesn't go left, ever. The F6 baffler is a bazooka, love it. However, that has put me in the situation where the one place I don't just love the 5w from is the tee, so I ended up putting a driving iron in over the sweetums for right now to try it out. I mostly need the 5w for 1 tee shot and then approach shots into 2-3 par 5s, and i use the driving iron for those par 5's depending on my drive, then 2-3 tee shots on par 3s and maybe one par 4.

The only 2h I've remotely considered is the 915hd I've got, but I tell you what, still hit it low and left for whatever reason (and don't say I can't hit a hybrid, because I hit my sweetums just fine).

If you have the swing speed to hit a 3 iron with a DGS300 you should be able to hit a 2 iron with a graphite shaft.
