Hey guys!

Going on my annual Baseball trip with a buddy of mine. We will be checking out a game in Milwaukee and Chicago, we’re driving up from Indiana.

Neither of us have played golf in the Chicago Milwaukee area and would like to a play one of the top and most memorable public course in that area.

Let’s say budget is $100 or less a man. Thank a lot.

And go..,,

Stonewall is great, so is Brown Deer in Milwaukee, probably 20 minutes from Miller Park.

I agree with CMCS, and prefer Shepherd's over Thunderhawk.

If your going to a Cubs game, Waveland is a 9 holes on Lake Michigan, walking distance from Wrigley. It's a city course, can be a little slow, but there's something kind of cool being on the lake. If going to a Sox game, Harborside is nice, I prefer Starboard. You could also play Ravisloe.

Pine Meadows is also pretty solid and White Deer Run is alright, though overpriced. If you go the long way from Milwaukee and take 43 to 12, you can play Morningstar in Waukesha. The amount of good to excellent courses that are between 45 minutes and an hour outside of Chicago is insane. The amount of quality courses that are less than that fit on one hand.

Brown Deer (north side of Milwaukee) hosted the Greater Milwaukee Open (Go! Go! GMO!!!) for years. Public park district course, but really nice.

Brighton Dale west of 94 in Kenosha is really good. It's 45 holes, and I can't remember the best combo, but there are a few good nines there!

Really enjoyed Thunderhawk. Haven't played Shepherd's Crook in years, but remember it was a great course.

Someone mentioned Morningstar which is very nice. Also, Broadlands is in the same area and similar quality.

Thank you for the ideas guys. They all look like great tracks. Out of everything listed so far anything stand out more than others for memorable. Besides a nice course I’d like to play a course that we’d talk about beyond the trip. Thanks again for your help.

No. Chicago has a lot of good affordable courses, but nothing in greater Chicago on the public side is truly great and a place you will remember years from now. All of the courses listed are nice $50-60 tracks, but they are modern and somewhat sterile in my opinion. Honestly, the most remarkable course listed is Brown Deer in MKE because you can see a plaque where Tiger hit his first professional golf shot. The course isn't any better than Thunderhawk of Shepherds, but it's got a cool story if you're looking for a memory.

Do you have anything in this Chicago Milwaukee that is public that you have played that stands out?

what kind of courses do you play in your hometown mostly? (where in Canada)

maybe that would help get you some more feedback (you've already gotten a bunch)

I have you’re right and I appreciate it a lot. In Canada (N. Ontario) I mainly play a links style championship course. I don’t mind the links style but I also don’t mind a tighter more tree lined course as well

I just want to play something nice mainly. I wish I had the $$ to play Erin Hills lol

Brown Deer is the most "parkland" of all the courses mentioned. Many trees in play. I'm a fan only because I got to play a high school tournament there. Also, I witnessed one of the greatest shots I've ever seen there. It was a Greater Milwaukee Open about 20 years ago. #1 I think. Par 4 about 430 yards. Bill Glasson hit his drive in a grove of trees right of the fairway. He was left with 170 to the pin, as the crow flies, but he was in no position to go direct to the green. He had a "lane" to hit his second shot which took him to the fairway but 20 yards left of the green. Glasson hit the ball down the middle of the chute (I remember thinking "good layup"). After getting to the fairway, the ball does a right turn, bounces a few times and rolls up onto the front of the green. Still about 35-40 feet from the pin, but to get it on the green from where he was? I remember that shot like yesterday...

How about the Glen Club?

It's well over $100 rack rate, but using boxgroove.com, you can play it during the week and late on the weekends for $80.

It's one of the top public courses in the area.

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms seems to be a course that most seem to find pretty memorable and it comes in just under $100, I think.

It is one hour north of Milwaukee in Sheboygan in the general Kohler area, so it's not between Chicago and Milwaukee.

the Kohler courses are in the area, so you could stop by and check out the Whistling Straits clubhouse while you're t here.

Now that I think about it, you should play Mount Prospect. It's on the northwest side, so kind of on the way to Milwaukee. It's one of the best in publics in Chicago and has some really interesting and tough greens. It was remodeled a few years ago in a Raynor-esque style with steep grassed faced bunkers. It's not a top 100 course or anything, but I've never played a muni like it in my life. Thunderhawk, the Glen Club, Shepherds are all good courses, but I bet you've played a dozen courses that look really similar. That's probably not true of Mount Prospect.

I'll also second the Bull. North of MKE, but it is a really good course and worth playing. Better than the average Jack Nicklaus course in my opinion.

Mount Prospect is booked. Looks really nice and can’t beat $30 for 18 and a cart. Thank you for the rec! Now since we were able to score cheap golf on Friday. Just curious what would a round cost us out at 4 big courses at Koehler?
