Golfdigest “Whats Wrong with your bag”.... whaaaat!?

Recommended Posts

One last thing: If wizz-bang equipment really mattered, wouldn't we see handicaps going down on a consistent basis, courses getting longer out of necessity, more below par rounds, and more enjoyment by the general public? I know some of this happens, but not around here. I rotate play on several courses, and not one of them has ever been redesigned due to the equipment. And no one I have talked to who does play wizz-bang stuff seems any better. Just saying...

Snowflake: I bought the new TaylorMade-Titleist-Callaway-Ping Smack-O-Matic Driver and Woods and a matching set of Sonic Hedgehog SuperLux Irons and they are the best thing ever!

Me: Then why am I beating you with 35 year old equipment?

35 year old equipment? that is "new stuff" . Had to bust your chops on that one well my VIPs are close to new they are only 36 years old. But then again I can beat most of these turkeys with my old 64 year old Hogans. Was playing one of my vintage rounds last year in the fall with the 62 FCs in the bag with a Penna driver and Mac Custom 4 wood. A couple of our young assistants came up wanted to play. Both of these kids are great guys. One remarked oh you got the antiques out. He told me they were playing from the back. Ok I will step back with you. Really? yep. Now I am a lot shorter than them even with a modern driver. I sorta held my own with them even though they beat me by a couple of shots. They remarked to one of my buddies that I shot +4 for 9 holes from the back with antique clubs. My buddy remarked that he knew exactly what I did. On the long par 4s I could not get home in 2 but laid that 4 or 5 wood where I wanted it or hit the stinger 2 iron and wedged and putted them to death. My buddy told me a couple of weeks later. He did ask if I had the rusty SOB Scotty in the bag? I told him naah I had an old Bullseye. I putt ok with that but not as well as with the Scotty. He told those boys if I had been gaming the Scotty it would have been game match set. They could not understand it. He told them first off I know that course like the back of my hand having close to 100 rounds on it the last 20 years and I know my game and what I can and can not do with any club. That is the key. Playing Vintage golf forces me back to my roots and concentrate on my shot placement and short game

I do think it's easier with my Bushnell watch, distances to front middle and back, makes club selection easier, rather than looking for sprinkler heads. And thank God for hybrids (mine are Tour edge exotic), best innovation, which I think are in the spirit of the game. To be perfectly honest, there's no way I could ever hit persimmon 250+. and at age 60 with my 913D2, I'm 240-250 when hit on the "screws". As for irons, my forged CB MX 25s are fine, felt better than JPX hot metals. FWIW.

I do have a rangefinder, but it's not a necessity.

On one hand, people want to grow the game, but on the other you "need" to spend 2k+ on a new bag every 5 years...

I own a rangefinder, but I don't use it on the course very often at all, less than once every 2-3 rounds. I do use it often on the range. That is where you can get a feel for how far you are hitting your clubs, per club. I do this every so often, usually in the spring, or with a new to me set of irons to see where my distance per club is at.

I am just a tick older than you and I only hit the Homna G1-X about 240 or 250 and about the same distance with the 915 D-2. I was absolutely flushing one of my Penna persimmons the other day and had a little draw with that one because it has a little softer shaft and it was rolling out about 220. When playing my VIPs here at sea level my 150 club is a hard 7 or a smooth 6. Most of the time now I try to smooth the 6 due to my back issues. Any of my 50s model clubs with stock lofts the 6 iron hard but smooth is my 150 club. Now I can get a lot of roll out when I hit a stinger driver and the fairways are dry and hard. As much rain as we have had the last 2 weeks the stinger ain't gonna work so I have to tee it higher and let it fly. And in my regular game set I carry a hybrid which is a 21* Adams but can go to a persimmon 5 wood @21* in the drop of a hat. That hybrid is sorta a trick club for me plus I have taught myself to hit a bump and run with it. One more club in my short game arsenal. But you got me to thinking I may try the bump and run with a persimmon 5 wood
