Most Underrated Golf Courses

Recommended Posts

Paa Ko Ridge in NM is awesome and very few know about it.

Just here in CO, Red Sky Norman course, Cordillera Summit course, and honestly too many to list.

LA area: Wilshire CC, Rustic Canyon, LACC South, and one could argue even LACC North.

Bayonet in Seaside, CA

I'll add a new course that no one is talking about, Scissortail in Thackerville, OK which is part of the Winstar Casino and Resort.

CO...Riverdale Dunes doesn't get the love I think it should.

A bit further south...why doesn't Bear Dance get much attention from the golf media with these rankings...Lakota Canyon Ranch gets more pub I think and it was nowhere near the course of Bear Dance...I will say Redlands Mesa did not disappoint. If the Red Sky courses are better, we have to stop there next time, but we do intend to go back out to Redland Mesa.

Riverdale is a local favorite and definitely a top course in the state. Not sure why it is not even considered in any list. Only thing I can say about that is, Colorado arguably has the best public courses in the Country, especially the Denver area. I would agree with Bear Dance over Lakota. As far as Red Sky, I think the Norman course is better than Redlands and definitely better than Fazio course. For your next trip definitely look into the cost of playing both as it is a stay and play package, and I believe and you can only play one course per day. I played with a friend who works there.

Easy one for me: Sleepy Hollow in New York. It is simply amazing. Designed by both C.B. MacDonald and Tillinghast and then restored by Gil Hanse- it is spectacular and currently ranked #101. If someone told me it should be in the Top 10 I could see their argument...not sure if I would agree it’s a Top 10, but I could see their argument.

I will certainly look into Red Sky then...the only complaint I had with Redlands and it's hardly a complaint...after the 1st half dz holes, the elevated tee box became a little monotonous...but the views did not. I thought Bear Dance just had more variety of holes and the conditions was soooo much better than Lakota.

With family in Brighton, I've been going out to Colo and playing golf for probably 15 yrs now and have played everything from City Park, to Highland Meadows...maybe the only course I wasn't overly thrilled with was Fossil Trace. For the money it was just okay I thought...but in general I agree the quality of public access golf in the DEN metro area is one of the best.

There are a couple more on the south side (Highlands Ranch area) I was told were really good...I think Golf Digest or one of the publications mentioned them...but week in, week out I could be content playing Riverdale Dunes and a few others.

I really enjoyed Bear Dance and walked away thinking it far exceeded my expectations. It's a fun course to play. Has some really good holes. It's not Top 100 or anything like that but it's a very solid, very good course. The guys in the Denver thread recommended it to me and said it's really good but in my research outside of that thread it seemed like it may just be 'decent'. After playing it, I don't understand why it's not talked about more.

Ak-Chin Southern Dunes is a course which gets a lot of love on the Phoenix threads but doesn't seem to get a ton of publicity nationally (recently it has started to get some traction however). It's a great course. One of the best, if not the best, layout in the greater Phoenix area. It really doesn't have a bad hole on the course. It offers a bit of everything. If the course were located in Scottsdale, it would be right there with the Troon North's and WeKoPa's of the world in terms of notoriety.

Driver: PXG 0311 Gen 4 9*
3w: Taylormade Sim 15*
Hybrid: Titleist 816h 21*
Irons: PXG 0311 Gen 5 T 4i thru GW
Wedges: Vokey SM9 54*, 58*
Putter: Scotty Cameron Special Select Newport 2.5

Bear Dance...me either, it's a little off the beaten path, especially for northern DEN metro. Many of the guys we played other courses with had not even played yet. Maybe not a top 100, but not far from it. For ex. I've played Paako Ridge several times...it's better than Bear Dance, but not miles ahead of it.

Phoenix area...I've played a fair amount of courses out west, including a few top 100, yet to play golf in AZ...been a few times on business, but golf was not on the agenda. It will be soon and all my buddies that have made the AZ golf trip rave about WeKoPa...so I've circled both courses as must plays among a couple more. Now I need to expand on that I see...thanks and noted, will keep AK chin Southern Dunes in the fold.

Blown away.

Moraine is amazing. Going to be there this weekend can't wait.

What day? I might go back Saturday morning if I can’t find a game in Columbus.

Honestly that front 9 at moraine was world class.

Palm Beach Par 3 is pretty classy track, I get that it’s a par 3 but ocean and river views immaculate conditioning.

North Creek Golf Club in Southaven MS. When we evacuated for the hurricane last year, we went to Memphis and played golf. This was one of the better tracks on the trip. Not long at all, but my brother and I used every club in the bag and the greens were pure. My brother and I both said that same place if it were in Florida would be a $150+ green fee peak season in Florida.
