The Truth ....and other strange things.

Recommended Posts

Right now I've "three sheets to the wind" ... so sounds like a good time to confess!

Often through this mighty interweb our online projection of ourselves differs a little from reality.

Can I post good scores? ... Yes .... If the moon is aligned, the grasshoppers tell me which way the green breaks, the morning due beads off my classic Footjoy's, the birds chirp, the wind is at my back and I have my trusty Yamaha 3 wood in hand! ...let it rip, I can do no wrong.

To be honest here, I have not broken 80 in over 18 months. I don't know who's turning up to the course. The guy who shoots 76 or the guy who shoots 106.

One thing I have recently discovered is that I play quite well when I'm rather drunk. I'm not a fan of drinking on course, but what happens in the club house is a different story.

Recently my home course closed it's doors, on our final day's tournament I posted a score of 102. I was devastated.

Afterwards I spent a several hours consoling myself at the bar and then decided to go out again at dusk, convinced that I wasn't going to let the course beat me like that on the last day.

I played the front nine again , stumbling down the fairways and redeemed my self with a 37.

A few weeks later after a few drinks at home, a got an impromptu invite from a friend for a quick nine late in the afternoon.. nice fast play with no-one ahead of us and I went around 1 over...

Now back to reality.. club play on Saturday. Double bogey ( or worse) every single hole going out, then shoot close to par on the back nine.... this actually happens far more often than I'd like to admit.

In the mean time I'm prescribing myself threes volumes of Harvey Penick.

Unless someone wants to pour half a bottle of scotch down my throat and drive me to the course....

Cheers J.

Can't say that I've ever played drunk and my experiences when dealing with people who are has never been positive, so it's not likely to ever happen. But, as you say, what happens after the fact in the clubhouse is another matter. I do recall propositioning (in a manner of speaking) a lady friend following a round and a couple of gin and tonics though. I remember her response: Oh, I'm not going to be the cause of a divorce -- be strong!

Now this wasn't the garden variety proposition. All I asked for was a cigarette -- a strange request coming from someone who doesn't smoke. But it was almost like she knew intuitively that was just a coded segue into something more as it was clear that we both had feelings for one another. We're still friends and we still play golf together.

[Added] Stranger still is that almost every one of my low rounds have been recorded while playing with her. It's like she is my golf charm.

My problem is LOFT -- Lack of friggin' talent

Back in my younger days, I noticed there was a level of drunkness at which I became an amazing pool player. Not hugely drunk, but it certainly took more than a couple of beers to get there. The downside was that it was difficult to maintain that level, and if I went too far over, my level of play rapidly deteriorated. Imagine a slow ascent up to the peak, then almost a vertical cliff on the other side.

A few of the guys I know will play like a different golfer after they got "lubed" a little. Which will loosen their joints and made them forget about the aches and pain while it lasts.

You should get a physical to see if you had lost the range of motion in your golf swing ( whether you feel the hurt or not ). Alcohol is a temporary fix and the root of the problem will progress with time to a point of no return. A century or two ago, the magical elixir was the only fix, but right now you could have proper medical care to have quality life.

Then again, A few drinks on the golf course within one's ability to function, is no stranger to the tradition.

Well a Golf Swing works best when it's fluid so sometimes adding fluid helps. ;)

Seriously, tension is the killer in golf. That's why 'Kill da Ball!' doesn't work.

I do suggest just trying to let up and relax vs becoming overly lubed up to release the tension and allow the swing to flow instead of forcing it.

My 2c.

Now having said all this My Confession is that although I know the truth of what I say, I don't always practice what I preach. Therefore the only thing that's consistent about my golf game is it's inconsistency.

Pretty crazy, but I was the same way shooting pool. Now golfing does not work the same way, in fact quite the opposite.

The underlying truth to this story, is that I just need to relax! Alcohol is a short cut to getting there.

My best rounds have always just happened so easily, that becomes a whole lot harder when I’m not playing often.

I build up expectations, get too excited and eager to play ... and next thing I’m double bogeying every other hole.

When I’m playing regularly, it’s a lot easier to just turn up with out all the BS going through my head, and just play my game.

Trying to find a happy medium is easier said than done.

I think I’ll have to start adopting the attitude that “I’m just going out for a walk ... and happen to have some golf clubs with me.”

I haven’t had a drink in almost five years and that’s just about the time I picked up clubs again. I will say that when I was drinking and golfing it wasn’t to loosen up my swing, it was only to drink. Drinking when I was younger was an addiction that almost ruined everything I had ever worked for, marriage, family, career. So about twelve or thirteen years ago I slowed down significantly to being a more social drinker. I don’t miss it one bit and when a person or group of people are almost at their maximum alcohol intake it is extremely obvious on the course and can become a problem for others to deal with. Hey have a few drinks but maintain dignity and be polite.

I always play a little better with some swing lube, particularly with others. I didn't grow up in golf and have played largely by myself due to schedule, having few friends (fewer that play, and none as hopelessly addicted as me), and being a little socially awkward. Whenever I'm playing with others, I get so worried about looking like an asshat in front of them because I don't know the rules of whatever game were playing, i play out of turn, or otherwise look like this is my first time that my brain just locks up. I picked up on the first two holes of my club recently for this very reason, both holes are usually solid pars for me, but during the approach shot it occured to me that I had possibly wagered much more money than I intended. Didn't card better than a par all day, had the putting touch of a double amputee with epilepsy,

And at one point apparently forgot the difference between a chip and a pitch. However, get a couple chivas regals and a Budweiser or two in me, and I'll do paintfill in my opponents blood. I'm supposed to be taking a PAT later this year and have no idea how I'm going to do it sober.

I have been told by a couple of friends that my singing is better after a couple of beers. One has requested a certain song at his funeral, and wants me to have a couple before the service.

Anything that requires any kind of physical coordination or athletic prowess is a different matter though. Even one beer will through me off.

I do enjoy riding in a cart, drinking beer, and watching others play. My commentary is quite humorous-at least to me!!!

Oh man. As a student, I lived on the edge of a park with a free-for-all par 3 course, and a pub beside the first tee. Only once, we took refreshments and then went back out to play. Ever since then, I've either been drinking or golfing, but not both. Either my golfing game, or my drinking game, is lacking a margin for error.
