Drive, Chip & Put

Recommended Posts

My two kids did our local earlier this month. My son (10, competitive golfer) has advanced 2/3 years he has done DCP but neither time advanced past the 2nd round. My daughter (8, doesn't really practice golf) was competing for her 2nd time. When asked if she wanted to practice her response was "I should probably practice chipping. My driving is really good though, as long as I don't miss the ball" Definitely low expectations.

My son drives the ball pretty far for his age, and I think he wanted to show off, so he proceeded to get 0 points on drive. Then his chipping was avg, and his putting poor. Not typical of his ability but that's how it can go when hitting 9 shots. Didn't place in any discipline.

My daughter got all 3 drives in the grid, got 2 chips (one of which was skulled and rolled up on the green) close to the hole. She made the first putt, got the second close (left it a little short) and completely blasted the third off the green (made up for leaving second short I guess). Placed in each discipline and 2nd overall advancing.

So the point of sharing my experience is I think it is a good low key event for kids of all skill types to compete in. It is free for the kids and they usually give them a nice gift. But certainly don't take it too seriously as it does require some luck and it is worth remembering that when you are considering whether to take a kid hours away to compete in the next level.

What a roller coaster of a story! Great to hear it happens to everyone. Thanks for sharing.

There's definitely something more important that I should be doing.

Really proud of my daughter yesterday at subs. Worked hard the night before, morning of tee time. No complaining. Started off pushing two drives far right, walked off with only 9 points. Got pretty emotional, but I reminded her there is ample room to make up for those two balls. But you can't perform when you are still upset about your last shot.

Walked to chipping, scored on all three balls, really turned it around. Now she's even with the field, and she's feeling it. First putt hung on the lip. Honestly, I think the volunteer picked it up a little too quickly. Holed the second putt, left the final putt inside a foot. Went from out of it to all over it. 1st place chipping, 1st place putting, 1st place overall. Moving on.

When we talked later, she told me she turned it around by just remembering what we had been working on. Keeping the left knee flexed, lining up putts, taking your time, etc. I think she also finally realizes how much work goes into competing, too. This is the second or third time in these competitions she has shown resilience and determination after a slow start. I told her those are the things you remember long after the thrill of the actual competition wears off.

Great story. There is no question that you have to put the bad stuff behind you and focus on the next task at hand. This concept goes with any sport. The kids that learn to let the bad holes go and move forward, are so much further ahead than those who can’t do this. With all that being said, in the DCP as you advance there is little room for error. My daughter is in the last stage before Augusta and I’ve told her that you can’t expect all of those girls to make mistakes. They only take one person to advance to Augusta and there is no room for error. Tough situation to deal with but also fun.

Agreed. We were at Regionals last year, and leading up I kept impressing on her that every shot counts. One bad shot can drop your score 10-15 points, and at that level it is an insurmountable gap.

The difficult part is putting it all together in one day. Like most kids at these events, she can usually post good scores in 2/3 disciplines. I’m not sure if that’s just random occurrence, or if she stepped up because she had dug a hole. Last two times she started with great driving scores, but couldn’t finish out chips and putts. I’m interested to see if she can post competitive scores in all three.

And congrats on moving on!

My son did his sub yesterday with some heavy competition. I thought he took himself completely out of it with his horrid chipping, but some how he is moving on to Regionals again.

A buddy of his had like 95 points going into driving and snapped 3 out of bounds. He should have just hit 7 iron in play and he would be moving on too. :(

Saw those results last night... couldn't believe it when I saw his driving was a big fat goose egg.

CONGRATS TO YOUR BOY! Have fun at regionals!

LOL, I saw him later that night and had to give him a hard time about it. Hell, sand wedge would have gotten the job done!! lmao.

Looking forward to regionals this time around. I'm actually going to put real work into the chipping portion this time around. In the last few qualifiers, my son started prepping the night before. Would like to get to Augusta once and give a shout out to HH on National TV :pimp:

Good luck and don't give up no matter what. You never know how the other kids are doing in your age group. I could not believe the number of kids faltering in the driving portion, which should be the easiest.

It's our first year. We live in Las Vegas. Sub Regional is in Phoenix. That's a 14 hour round trip drive to hit 9 shots. The kid made 1st alternate but honestly, we wouldn't bother if they called.

If your not willing to drive why did you enter? They are pretty upfront on where you need to go for DCP competitions. As a parent you do lots of things for your kids. Sometimes that means driving 14 hours for 9 shots. The reason you do it is for them and they want to go all the way to Augusta.

I agree the contest has flaws and there is a lot luck. At the same time make it a weekend and about them. Even if they don’t win they still will have memories and will remember you cared enough to take them.

To be honest, my son just started playing tournament golf. We were encouraged by the other parents to sign up, so we did. Didn't have any idea about the "Augusta Grand Prize". The kid and I both felt like it was a waste of time. My kid plays travel hockey too. I know too well the sacrifices of driving long distances for my kid. He has little interest in Augusta National. Vegas Golden Knights games? He's ready to drive to Canada for those!

My son's a competitive golfer since 6 and this is the first time he made it to the regional finals - Chambers Bay this weekend - 9 shots for Augusta!

He's played tons of tournaments but he told me he's never felt so nervous over a 6 foot putt then DCP, agree there is no room for error.

We decided this year not to practice specifically for DCP or talk about it ...just play the normal tournaments and practice 1 hour before at DCP venue. Seems to have work, i think all these things are what they regularly do so no need making it special.

What are peoples thoughts on how you approach the final tournament before Augusta......any tips to keep them relaxed and not too stressed out knowing the prize.... I feel kids who have been playing golf for many years probably appreciate/stress more than newbies...

I was just thinking. If I had to hit those putts and chips in front of a crowd, I would be shi**ing my pants. Amazing how the youngsters handle the pressure.

We are going to regionals for the 2nd year and instead of practicing specifically for DCP, I think we will just do our normal routine of playing golf with some extra time on short game. There is no way to tell where pins will be until the day of so I'm skeptical as to how much practicing will actually help. By regionals, pretty much all the kids can DCP. Its the kid who gets lucky on the putting and chipping areas that moves on. Oh and another key is to hit 3 drives in play. I couldn't believe how many good golfers hit drives OB at the subs.

We also have our our Regional this weekend and are not doing anything specific for it. In fact, I am not even going for it - was not there for the local, or sub regional and the little guy basically does not feel he needs me there. Fortunately, he did agree to take me to Augusta IF he makes it.

All the best to all WRX parents whose kids are at Regional and hopefully we meet up next year at Augusta!

Congrats on making it!

Every kid is different, so it's hard to say what is going to give your kid the right amount of confidence and comfort going in to the regional without making too big a deal of it. But I can tell you practically every other parent out there will be making a very big deal out of it. I haven't been to Chambers, but I've done Sawgrass. I would imagine most Regionals experiences are similar. If you show up an hour before your tee time, expect to find 40 kids putting to maybe 8 cut holes on a green. You'll see kids chipping to random locations on grass. You may wait 10 minutes for a slot in the range.

If you want your kid to be at ease and relaxed prior to this tournament, getting there an hour ahead of time may be cutting it close, unless you are in the older age groups and all the other kids have cleared out. Went last year when my daughter was 7-9, and there were teenagers out there warming up, a 2-3 hours before their tee times. But again, if your kid needs little warm up/transition time, showing up later may be better.

Good luck to your kid, hope it's a fun day.

Ask Tiger that same question.....

Its pressure if you ask me. I think in the younger groups the lack of having someone set them up give them a swing though has an impact on that. Most of these kids have never teed up a ball much less tried to align to hit a big grid. I watched my daughter hit one ball ob, and as soon as she setup I was oh Sh$! I know where this is about to go. They get out of their routine very easy when going solo.

Out of curiosity is there anything in the rules to prevent you from teeing the ball up during the chipping portion? I scanned it quickly but there didn't seem to be any mention of it.

One event when the teeing ground was hard as a rock they let us, but normally they will not.

Great advice on here and good luck to all the kids and ‘nervous’ parents!

Agree at the end of the day it does come down to luck....in fact my son had a drive which hit a tree and came back to score 12 points....he won by 1 point. The kid that missed out must have been gutted .... I know mine would have been waxing lyrical about the unfairness of it all if it happened to him.

Anyways, glad I taught my son to pick/fix up every divot as the course will give back to those who look after it!

I thought if it goes out of bounds and comes back in then it doesn’t count? Maybe I’m thinking of the long drive competition on Golf Channel though.
