We normally play in 3:30 at my club and that's not pushing it. I tend to like faster rounds where you can stay in rhythm. Of course, I'm not taking a ton of pics at my course either.

I’m not either. The sad thing was both tee times were before 8am. Seems like when it comes to public golf in Denver, if you want a 4 hour round you’ve got to tee off before 7. I played CommonGround the prior weekend at 6:30am and we finished in 4 hrs.

 

Sadly, my wallet isn’t built for a club membership right now either.

I'm not either. The sad thing was both tee times were before 8am. Seems like when it comes to public golf in Denver, if you want a 4 hour round you've got to tee off before 7. I played CommonGround the prior weekend at 6:30am and we finished in 4 hrs.

 

Sadly, my wallet isn't built for a club membership right now either.

The good thing about the right club is the pace of play is fast and usually monitored by the membership. We don't have a marshall at our course but everyone knows everyone. The members are willing to call each other out for slow play.

The biggest issue is that the majority of the regular public courses in Denver use either 9 or frickin 8 minute tee time breaks. Unfortunately with the type of golfers you generally get on public courses, there's almost no way to have a round under 4.5 hours or even 5 hours later in the day when using 8 minute breaks with a full tee sheet.

 

Your best shot at a regular public course pace on the weekend is to play a course with 10 minute tee time breaks. Walnut Creek and Legacy Ridge are two examples. They used to have the best pace of play around when they had rangers on the course 10 years ago. It was the only place I had ever seen a ranger force people to pick up and move to the next tee or leave the course with a refund. Unfortunately the volunteer ranger program at both courses seems to have gone away. I heard rumors that the city wanted to stop giving out free rounds to the volunteers and they don't have the budget to pay people to ranger full time during the day. Still with the 10 minute tee times, it's pretty rare that I've had a round over 4.5 hours at either course.

 

Or go up to Highland Meadows or Pelican Lakes in Windsor where it's rare for them to fill the tee sheet on weekends as most people don't want to make that drive up from Denver.

Agreed on the slow play. It's the worst. Thankfully I do most of my playing during the week, and often early, so we get through quick (played Saddle in 3:15 on Monday morning, for example). When I play on weekends, I just tell myself it's going to be a looooong round and that I may as well enjoy it, since I can't do anything to change it.

Assistant pro’s advice was to avoid hitting it until 10 or 11.

Pace of play should be good on just about every private course. If it takes you more than 3.5 hours to walk 18 holes with nobody holding you up in front of you, you're extremely slow. I got the first tee time at Broadlands Friday and made it around walking in 2:42 playing with one other guy.

How is that course? That’s probably the one I’ll look at joining when we move.

. I liked it, great shape, as are most this year. Didn't see any silver moss or dollar spot. Since it is an old course, 1928, I was expecting lots of big trees, luckily I was wrong. Lots of doglegs that you need to carry if you hit driver. Greens were a little slow, especially compared to Kimball, way less trees too. Rough was short enough you could hit out of it, just not much spin. Back nine greens were flatter but hard to see breaks on. It was odd to have 7 par 4's in a row, par is 71.

Restaurant was great and the people I interacted with seemed pretty decent. Only houses on the south edge and not in play unless you really miss. Carts were all Yamaha quiet tech gas so I felt at home. Nephew joined there this year.

The Olde Course in Loveland and Collindale in Fort Collins can be maddeningly slow. Collindale I sometimes wonder if I'm going to finish before dark, when we start at noon...(One time had to watch some one hit 7 shots to get on the green for #15 (209 Par3 from the blues)... I know I stink, but at least I try to get around the course on pace :)

I'm jealous. Highland Meadows is one of my favorite courses in the state and if it wasn't 45-60 minutes away I'd be playing it every weekend. I'm guessing they probably lost a few players up there to the TPC too, which should make pace of play even better.

I agree. First 4 holes you dont need driver. 5th and 9th hole does require it. Though I do on number 2. 3 it helps on the middle trap in the fairway but leaves an ODD distance to a narrow depth green. On 10 that fairway slopes way to much right to left as does the green making a driver hard there. Hole 11 have to bomb diver if you even remotely think of going at it in 2.... other then the green is like 20 yard above the fairway making it hard.

 

Edit: looked at last score card and I did only pull driver 5 times

Looking for input on Vail Valley Courses. We got the hook up to play Sonnenalp and Frost Creek in a couple of weeks. Anyone played either of them? How do they compare to each other or the Cordillera course? I have search the forums but there is not much information on either

Anyone play the Club at Crested Butte? I'm heading up there next week with the family and think I'm going to play it one afternoon...from the pictures it looks incredible.

 

I played CB 7-8 years ago. As I recall, the two nines felt like completely different courses - front was relatively flat and pedestrian (spectacular views aside) and the back was much more challenging with narrow fairways, elevation changes, blind greens, etc. Have fun!

I was more than happy to leave it in the bag. That was a point in time where I had NO confidence in it. Think I finished +6 for the day with a ball in the creek on 16 or 17. Great day.

If it was the creek it is 16 as it runs down the right hand side. Really like that hole and 17. DO not like the par 3 prior !!!

Welcome Ryder. I have not played those. The mountain courses (west of denver) I have played are limited to the ones around Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction adn the Raven. I am sure others on here probably have played them and can chime in.

Well looks like CHCC is out. The member we were going to play with had a scheduling conflict for Friday. They have re-scheduled for next week but I'll be on family vacation in Breck. Oh well, maybe next time.

 

On another note, won my second round match last night in our club championship. I made it to the final 4 in our flight - pretty stoked. It was a tough match against a very good player and we both gave some holes away. Let me tell you, it was stressful for me. It took a while for me to feel "normal" last night.

My wife and I played Sonnenalp a couple of year ago when we we're still with Club Corp. I've never play Cordillera so I can make a comparison but Sonnenalp was a nice resort style course. Honestly, I only recall one hole because it had a huge elevation drop from the tee. We enjoyed it and would def play it again if we were still with CC.
