If you could get a lesson from any instructor...who?

Golf Instructors I'd like to take a lesson from include, Harvey Penick, Dave Pelz, and Butch Harmon. There are so many other fine teachers, but if I must choose three, I'm in great hands with this trio.

Dan and Monte would be great. Dan picked up some excellent things online but i think in person would be 10 x better too. The other absolute standout for me would be Brian Manzella. His track record is great as a teacher.

If the idea is to do something other than usual (which for me is Monte when I can), I think it would be fun to spend a day with Pete Cowen (though watching his contorted ideas of bunker play and all his lines, etc. gives me a headache, lol). That would be my first choice for this hypothetical.

 

My brother-in-law spent a fair amount of time with Butch a few years ago and it was partly for the experience and to see what he might get out of it, had a great time and it helped him (but he's a scratch/plus), and based on his enjoyment of that I think that would make for a fun day.

 

After that, and I'm not pandering, there are a few guys on here to pick from that I think would be fun for a day just because they seem to know there stuff and the wrx connection.

I've met Butch several times, and some of those times for a lesson, and really I have no idea if he's a great instructor because I haven't really worked with him enough, but he is a great storyteller. I wish I could have taken lessons from his father. Claude Harmon would have been the pinnacle to me in another time/space.

 

But I say this with all seriousness and as instructional expert myself (not golf, but executive coaching). One of the marks of a great instructor is not only the knowledge of the game/swing, but just as important is the ability to relay the message many different ways tailored to the student and be engaging. I've met many of the game's top names in instruction, and many tend to be repetitive and inflexible. They clearly know the game, but many times they will not resonate with a student when the currency of their reputation wears out. That's never an issue for Monte, he nails it. I know for sure there are many excellent instructors I have not met and we have not even heard of...lots of hidden gems. Golf is a f'd up industry in many ways, so many sad tales, and such a gap between those making bank at it and those surviving on their dedication and love of the game. All that being said, Monte is truly one of the best. He's come a long way since the early youtube videos in some unnamed park/field, but going back to those old videos for now, the amount of wisdom and personalization gold.

 

I know Monte has this life challenge of balancing being a great instructor with chasing his tour dreams. Even though the world would be robbed of access to Monte's instructional genius if he made it on the Senior Tour, I sincerely hope he realizes his dreams. It's more than he deserves it, he's worked hard for it, and it would be story to show us all that the golf world is right. And it's ok if we lose him to the tour because he can't play forever (haha!) and someday he will back to instruction.

Well said. I'm in my 56 yr. of banging balls self taught and found Monte 4 yrs.ago. My son took me to Pebble 2 yrs. ago for 4 rounds of golf which was a bucket list item. Contacted Monte and asked him to play 18 holes with us which is still a bucket list item. He said he would love too but we couldn't get him on because they already set us up with a 4 some. I ditto CasualLie and then some. I will meet him someday God willing.

If I could go back in history I'd take Byron Nelson. He taught some of the best players after his prime as a golfer, he was such a nice man - and he knew how to swing the club and how to play the game.

 

Old Tom Morris would be fun too. Having a lesson with Young Tommy fooling around in the background....

I would throw Phil in that boat too. His short game video is the greatest instruction presentation I've ever seen. So much knowledge, so clearly and concisely delivered, with simple drills and practice routines. And so strong and consistent in his opinions, nothing contradictory or confusing. He is also a natural in front of the camera. If he had a mind to go down that path he would be highly sought after by tour players.

I would also include Monte for sure.
